PARTICIPATED IN GOLDEN HOUR TANGO EVALUATION AND CONDUCTED BROKEN ARROW EXERCISE. 1961 55 AEROSPACE RESCUE AND RECOVERY SQUADRON TRANSFERRED FROM KINDLEY AIR FORCE BASE BERMUDA, TO MCCOY AIR FORCE BASE FL. 1969 Sep 55 The Norwegian vessel Jopeter was caught in a North Atlantic ice pack. A large-scale rescue effort was directed by the 55th AR Squadron, and 26 passengers and crewmen were evacuated to the safety of another ship. 20 Oct-21 Nov 1961 ARS participated in the Cuban Crisis by deploying HH-43, HC-54, and HU16 aircraft to various bases in Florida. During the one month period ARS forces flew 935 hours in

support of United States contingency operations in the Caribbean area. These resources were from the Eastern, Central, and Western ARCs and the 54th, 55th, 41st, and 48th AR Squadrons. Reserve forces from the 301st AR Squadron also participated. 22 Apr 68 The Lebanese cargo ship Alheli, with 26 crewmen aboard, radioed that they were sinking in rough seas about 900 miles east of Bermuda. An HC-130 from the 55th ARR Squadron, Kindley AFB, Bermuda, orbited the sinking ship, vectored a British ship, the Megantic to the scene then dropped flares to aid the loading of the survivors aboard Megantic. May 8 Following a mass exodus of refugees from Cuba, about 700 were temporarily quartered at Eglin AFB, Florida. Forty-eight personnel of the 39th ARR Wing and 66 personnel of the 55th ARR Squadron participated in the effort to aid the refugees.

In September 1954 the 8th ARG was established to perform the mission of Strategic Air Command aircrew recovery in the polar region and Pacific Ocean. As part of the global rescue concept made viable during the 1950s, SA-16As provided coverage for air transport and tactical fighter units during the Lebanon and Formosa crises in 1958. Other early USAF units that operated the Albatross abroad included the 31st ARS at Clark AB, Philippines, the 33rd ARS at Naha Air Station, Okinawa, the 36th ARS atTachikawa, Japan, the 55th ARS at Thule AB, Greenland, the 79th ARS at Guam, and ttie 95th Strategic Wing at Goose Bay, Labrador. Stateside units assigned Albatrosses included the 10th ARS at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska, the 41 st at Hamilton AFB, California, the 42nd ARS at March AFB, California, the 71st ARS in Alaska, the 74th ARS at Ladd AFB, Alaska, and the 48th ARS at Eglin AFB, Florida, where Albatross training was conducted from 1964 to 1968. 20 Aug 88 Record flight of two MH-60G aircraft, 55th Special Operations Squadron, from Antigua to Eglin AFB, Ficrida, a distance of 1,640 nautical miles, in 11.1 hours with six aerial refuelings in transit.
