Leopard Gear Ordering Information: Please turn in ALL student apparel orders by November 21st . The order will be delivered before the Holiday break and make great presents for all your favorite Leopards. Please fill out an order form and drop it off in the office. Happy Shopping! JWE Students Make All State Choir: Five JWE students have been accepted to the Oregon All State Elementary Choir. In January Gabrielle Simantel, Hayleeann Scollard, Monelle Lumapas, Taylor Kolibaba, and Avery Williams will travel to Eugene to sing with other students from across the state. We are very proud to have these students representing our school. Office Reminders: Here are a few things we could use your help with in the office: 

Party Invitations: Please be reminded that our district policy states, "invitations to parties are not to be handed out at school unless there is one for every student in the class. Teachers and staff are not allowed to provide names and phone numbers for other students."

Flowers and Balloons: Also, "delivery of flowers or balloons to students at school is discouraged at JWE. Parents are asked to not have these items sent to their children at school during the day, but rather to handle these special gifts at home."

Visitors: When visiting the school ALWAYS sign in at the office. Please be sure to fill out your yellow visitor badge completely with your name, destination and date. Thank you to the many parents who are already doing this.

After School Messages: After school changes should be in writing and dropped off at the office in the morning. If you have a true emergency and need to call the office to make a last minute change, it must be done by 1:30 (12:30 on Wednesdays). Any calls after that are not guaranteed to get to the teacher in time.

Attendance: Thank you to all those parents that call the school office before 9:00 a.m. when their child is going to be late or absent. This is important to account for your child and prevent them from having an unexcused absence. This will also help reduce the number of calls we have to make to you if your child is unaccounted for.

Pants Needed for the Health Room: We are in dire need of boys and girls SMALL pants for our health room. These pants are used to help students when they have an accident at school and need a change of clothes. It is most helpful when the pants are easy on/off with elastic waist (i.e. sweat pants, leggings, etc.). If you have any of these type of pants that your child has outgrown, please consider donating them to our health room. Thank You! Fall Box Tops Contest: It’s time to turn in the Box Tops you’ve been working so hard to collect all summer long. Our first contest of the 2014-2015 school year will run from now through the month of November. The classroom that submits the most Box Tops during the contest will win a cup cake party for their entire classroom in December! In order to make sure yours are included, have your student turn them directly into their teacher or you can drop them off in the school office in the Box Tops collection container. Either way, PLEASE remember to write your teachers name on box or bag. Many Box Tops continue to be turned in with no name! Did you know that you can also help John Wetten earn electronic Box Tops (eBoxTops) by shopping at your favorite stores, entering sweepstakes or even playing fun games on line? Visit btfe.com and register today. It’s simple to do and without the hassle that goes along with the paper box tops! Campbells Soup Labels: While Box Tops gets most of the attention, don’t forget to clip and save your Campbell’s Soup labels. Turn them into the collection box in the office where they will be used to earn new equipment and supplies for the school. You can also help earn our school additional bonus points through the Labels For Education website (www.labelsforeducation.com) and the special bonus opportunities posted. And, there are printable Campbell’s coupons you can use the next time you go shopping.

JWE News by Email: Please take a moment to sign up for our JWE News by email if you haven’t already. You can do this simply by emailing Linda Alberico at [email protected] and ask to be added to the list or you can write a note and give it to us in the office. Nurse’s Notes: As we quickly move along in the school year, a reminder that we have students that still need to have immunizations for this school year. The State of Oregon requires that if your child is not immunized per guidelines attached or properly documented exemptions, the child will be excluded on Feb 18, 2014 and not allowed back into school till they have the correct documentation at school. Please take time to look at the attached guidelines and make sure that your student is up to date. Also we are entering into Flu/Cold season. As a reminder, if your child has a fever (100.0 or above) or vomits they MUST stay home till they have been fever/vomit free for 24 hours past the last time they had symptoms. And without any medication to keep them fever/vomit free. Thank you for the attention to this detail as it really helps to reduce the illness that is in our school. Carolyn Anderson, RN, Gladstone District Nurse Counselor’s Corner: The Importance of Respecting Feelings. As I shared last month, I will be making regular visits to all students’ classrooms this school year, teaching guidance lessons on a variety of topics. I look forward to delivering these lessons and hope what students learn in the classroom from me will be helpful for everyone at home. We will focus on a different topic each month, and this month we will focus on feelings and the use of assertive skills. The importance of respecting feelings cannot be understated. Young children are typically trusting and open, but unfortunately, even by the time they reach school age, many learn to hide their true feelings. They pick up signals from parents, adults, and older youth, and sense- or are downright told- that there are certain feelings they should keep to themselves. I know as adults we aren’t always comfortable talking to our young children about feelings, especially feelings of fear, insecurity, anger, jealousy, and loneliness. We respond in ways that may feel helpful, such as “You shouldn’t feel that way” or, “There’s no reason to be afraid.” These responses teach children not to share what they are feeling and that what they feel is invalid. Children who cannot express their feelings in a healthy way will find other ways to cope with those feelings; sometimes in ways with which we do not agree. Other children may become sad and withdrawn. There are no easy answers to fix the way anybody feels, and the truth is- there doesn’t necessarily have to be one. One way to be supportive to children is to listen. There is no need to have an answer or even a “fix”. Just simply listening and allowing whatever it is your child is feeling validates what it is they are feeling, helping them to find their way to resolving the feeling for themselves. And that is a life lasting lesson we all will benefit from. When children learn how to identify their feelings, along with sharing those feelings in a respectful yet assertive manner, they will be better equipped to manage those feelings and to make healthy and appropriate choices. I look forward to teaching the importance of feelings and assertive skills this month as a continuation on the bullying prevention lessons I began in October. I hope you will join me by continuing the conversation at home! Jessica Winfrey, JWE Counselor Kids Who Love Learning Love School: You love your child and show it many ways—with hugs and kisses, and with the words, “I love you.” One of the best ways to love your child is to promote a love of learning. Children who love learning feel more confident and achieve at higher levels. They look forward to going to school because they know they can succeed and they’re excited about what they’re learning. To boost your child’s love of learning and love of school:  Promote perfect attendance. Children who are in school every day don’t miss important lessons. They’re more prepared for tests.  Review homework. Look at all schoolwork—before your child takes assignments to school and when the teacher sends corrected work and tests home. Ask about what your child is learning.  Reinforce learning at home. Find ways to supplement what your child is learning at school with fun activities at home. Ask the teacher for suggestions. Your enthusiasm about what your child is learning will be contagious.  Show your pride. Display your child’s schoolwork on the refrigerator, in a frame or in the family scrapbook.  Speak positively about school. Comment about exciting lessons the teacher has planned. Say you are thrilled about all your child is learning in school.

Late Info Picture Retakes: Picture retake day will be Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014. If you do not want to keep your original packet please return it on retake day and Lifetouch will make you a new packet with the new picture. If you would like to have your child photographed again and they do not return the original packet, you will have to pay for an additional packet. If your child is new to JWE or did not have their picture taken during the first picture day, please make sure they get their picture taken on Thursday. Picture Packets are available in the school office for anyone needing one or you can order online at www.mylifetouch.com (picture day ID FO744469Q1). Students will need to bring the online “Boarding Pass” with them on picture day if you order online. TAG Referrals: Parent referrals for a Talented and Gifted evaluation for your child are being accepted now through December 18th, 2014. If you see a need for your child to be evaluated for TAG this school year, please contact our building TAG coordinator for a Parent Nomination Form. A signed Parent Nomination Form must be turned in by December 18th.
