Chenin Blanc Montlouis, Sec, Les Dix Arpents 2014 Domaine de la Taille aux Loups, Loire In 1988, Jacky Blot set up this Domaine attempting to drag the Montlouis appellation out of the shadows of its neighbour, Vouvray. Jacky is one of the world’s greatest exponents of the Chenin Blanc variety, his 12.5 hectares of vines are planted with nothing else. He is driven by the pursuit of purity in his wines, fertilisation is no longer used, chemical treatments are practically non-existent & pruning is radically short, keeping yields severely low. At harvest time picking is by hand, successive tris are undertaken & a severe grape selection is carried out. This cuvee is racy, pure & bracing, & the perfect accompaniment to oysters.

Wine of Eglise Clinet, Pomerol This is heady, floral, with notes of cloves, minerals, herbs & rich, searing bright cherry fruit. Plumy, voluptuous, concentrated, this has ample backbone, racy acidity, fine tannins & one is left with pure loganberries on the finish. Château d'Angludet 2005 Cru Bourgeois, Margaux I dont believe I have ever tasted a better d’Angludet than this 2005. It reveals an inky/black/purple hue as well as an explosive bouquet of road tar, blackberries, cassis, underbrush, & forest floor characteristics. Medium to full-bodied with sweet tannin, copious glycerin, & a heady finish, it is a sumptuous, atypically forward 2005 to consume during its first 12-15 years of life. Drink 2006-2021. 92 Parker Points. Château Cantemerle 2005 5ème Cru Classé, Haut-Medoc The deep ruby-hued 2005 displays aromas of licorice, roasted herbs, sweet cherries, & flowers. In the mouth, the wine seems almost light in comparison to its peers, but it possesses an ethereal seriousness, purity, & overall harmony that are striking for its delicacy & finesse. A blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon & the rest primarily Merlot with a tiny dollop of Cabernet Franc, it should be at its finest between 2012-2025+.

Château Léoville- Poyferré 2008 2ème Cru Classé, Saint-Julien, One of the finest over-achieving efforts in this vintage as well as a “best buy” for a topflight St-Julian, this 2008 is an irresistible success. It reveals an opaque ruby/purple colour, lots of unctuosity & a boatload of sweet cassis & black cherry fruit intertwined with notions of licorice, smoke & oak. Full-bodied, remarkably concentrated & stunningly pure & textured, this sensational wine is already drinking well, & will be even better with 2-3 years cellaring. It should last for 20-25 years. Bravo! 94 Parker Points.

211

Château Léoville Barton 2008 3ème Grand Cru Classé, Saint-Julien, Another blockbuster, long-term wine from proprietor Anthony Barton, this 2008 is among the biggest, most back-strapping efforts of the vintage. As with many vintages of Leoville Barton, it is best forgotten for another decade. An inky/purple color is followed by notes of forest floor, camphor, red and black fruits, & a hint of wood. This brawny, masculine-styled St.-Julien possesses huge body, massive concentration, & mouth-searing levels of tannin. However, the tannins are much sweeter than the 2005's were at the same stage, so that should not be an issue as long as potential purchasers exercise patience. This impressively pure, classic Bordeaux! 94 Parker Points. Château Pavillon Rouge 2008 2nd Wine of du Chateau Margaux The second wine, the 2008 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux, represents 47% of the crop (keep in mind that 17% of the total crop was sold off in bulk), & is composed of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, & the rest mostly Petit Verdot with a tiny dollop of Cabernet Franc. It is a beautiful wine exhibiting classic purity along with red & black fruits intermixed with licorice, tobacco leaf, & floral nuances. Sweet, round tannins, & a lovely forward freshness suggest this stunning second wine should drink well young…92 Parker Points.

Château Pétrus 1995 Pomerol Unquestionably one of the vintage’s superstars, the Petrus 1995 is taking on a personality similar to the extraordinarily backward, muscular 1975. This is not a Petrus that could be approached in its youth (i.e., the perfect duo of 1989 & 1990). The wine exhibits an opaque ruby/purple colour followed by a knockout nose of toast, jammy black fruits & roasted coffee. Chateau Rieussec 2007 (37.5 cl) 1er Cru Classe Sauternes, This has a very primal nose, the oak exposed at the moment although there is obviously a great deal of fruit concentration underneath. The palate is well balanced, a little oaky on the entry, dried honey, lemon curd, apricot & orange peel towards the finish. (93 Parker Points)

Chateau Suduiraut 1975 (75 cl) 1er Cru Superieur Classe, Sauternes The brilliant, old gold colour is already impressive. The fully developed, melded nose, with aromas of orange peel, wax & oak, end of hint of mint & almond. On the palate, plenty of body, offering aromas of citrus fruit, quince & rancio, before ending with a slight tang. Powerful & still with some years to go, this is an excellent illustration of a great Suduiraut vintage from this decade.

PORT & MADEIRA

Some of these old Port houses no longer exist; many are absurdly rare. They are opened at the customers own risk & will not be refunded in the extremely unlikely event that they are, for any reason, out of condition. We justify this on the basis that they are extraordinarily good value & it is worth the punt to taste history! The provenance for all of these wines is excellent. 10cl Glass
