40 Hours Lenten Devotion for the Jubilee Year of Mercy

General Prayers

Please leave in the Church.

“At times we are called to gaze even more attentively on mercy so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father’s action in our lives.” -

Pope Francis

Forty Hours Devotion The Forty Hours Devotion is a special gathering as a community before the Blessed Sacrament to pray before the Lord in solemn adoration. The devotion begins with a Mass followed by continuous adoration over a 40hour period, and it ends with a Mass and Benediction. In the Bible the number 40 is associated with a sacred period of time: the rain at the time of the flood of Noah lasted 40 days and nights, and the Hebrews wandered in the desert for 40 years on the way to the Promised Land. Jesus fasted for 40 days before beginning his public ministry. The devotion was promoted by both Saint Philip Neri and Saint Ignatius of Loyola in the 1500s. In the United States, Saint John Neumann (18111860), bishop of Philadelphia, helped spread the devotion. The focus of this devotion is on the Holy Eucharist with a special emphasis placed on praying for strength:   

to embrace God’s mercy, to dedicate ourselves to being merciful with others as the Father has been with us, to reflect God’s mercy through the corporal and spiritual works of mercy to those in our midst.

When we set our eyes upon Jesus in the Eucharist, we are setting our eyes on Mercy itself.

Prayer of the Diocese Lord, Help us to become more merciful as a diocese, as a parish, as a family, as individuals. Show us the poor! Who are the poor in our midst? How can we show mercy to them? “God wants to touch others mercifully through us. But for that to happen we must first be touched by his merciful love ourselves. We must let ourselves be found anew by God’s forgiveness so that He can pass it along through us to others.” - Bishop Liam Cary The Year of Mercy is also a time to act, engaging in the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy.

Corporal Works of Mercy Feed the hungry. Give drink to the thirsty. Clothe the naked. Shelter the homeless. Visit the sick. Visit the imprisoned. Bury the dead.

Spiritual Works of Mercy Counsel the doubtful. Instruct the ignorant. Admonish sinners. Comfort the afflicted. Forgive offenses. Bear wrongs patiently. Pray for the living and the dead.

THE ANGELUS This wonderful prayer evolved from a recitation of three Hail Mary’s following an evening bell around the 12th century to its present form (with morning and midday recitations) in the 16th century. Although the Angelus has been traditionally said three times daily, at 6 am, noon and 6 pm, you can pray it at anytime! It is still accompanied by the ringing of a bell (the Angelus bell) in some places such as Vatican City and parts of Germany and Ireland. The Regina Coeli prayer (which may also be sung as a hymn) replaces the Angelus during the Easter season. The Angelus reminds us of the Annunciation (shown in this famous rendition by Fra Angelico), when the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary with great, (if somewhat startling), news! As we read in Chapter One of Luke’s Gospel, (Luke 1:26-38) God wished Mary, truly a model of humility, to be the mother of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ! His desire for her brings to mind the line from Matthew’s gospel: “Whoever humbles himself shall be exalted” (Mt 23:12).

V. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary. R. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Hail Mary, full of grace, The Lord is with Thee; Blessed art thou among women, And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners, Now and at the hour of our death. Amen V. Behold the handmaid of the Lord. R. Be it done unto me according to thy word. Hail Mary… V. And the Word was made Flesh. R. And dwelt among us. Hail Mary… V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. LET US PRAY Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts, that we to whom the Incarnation of Christ Thy Son was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection. Through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.

THE MYSTERIES OF THE ROSARY Sorrowful Mysteries 1. Begin by holding the crucifix, saying "In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit," (making the sign of the Cross while doing that), then say the Apostles Creed. 2. On the single bead just above the cross, pray the "Our Father." 3. The next cluster has 3 beads. The "Hail Mary" prayer is said on these three beads. You pray the 3 Hail Marys while meditating on the three divine virtues of faith, hope, and love/charity. 4. On the chain or cord after the three beads, say the "Glory be..." 5. On the next bead, which is a single bead, you announce the first divine mystery of contemplation, “The Agony in the Garden.” 6. Pray 10 Hail Marys while contemplating the first mystery. 7. After the 10th Hail Mary you will have completed the first of 5 decades which make up a Chaplet of the Rosary. On the chain or cord pray the Glory be to the Father... 8. On the bead pray the O My Jesus... 9. On the same bead announce the second mystery, “The Scourging at the Pillar.” Repeat steps 6 – 9 meditating on each of the subseqent Sorrowful Mysteries. 10. Announce the third mystery, “The Crowning with Thorns.” 11. Announce the fourth mystery, “The Carrying of the Cross.” 12. Announce the fifth mystery, “The Crucifixion and Death.” 13. Conclude with the Glory Be To The Father, the O My Jesus, The Our Father and end the rosary with the Hail Holy Queen and the sign of the Cross.

The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Our Father Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory Be Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Fatima Prayer (O my Jesus) O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, and lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Your Mercy.

The Hail, Holy Queen Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy! our life, our sweetness, and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley, of tears. Turn, then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus; O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Amen.

DIVINE MERCY CHAPLET BEAD 1 - Make the Sign of the Cross In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. BEAD 2 - Optional Opening Prayers You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us. (Repeat three times) - O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You! BEAD 3 - Our Father Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, Amen. BEAD 4 - Hail Mary Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, Amen. BEAD 5 - The Apostle's Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

BEAD 6 - The Eternal Father Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. BEAD 7 - On the ten small beads of each decade: For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world. BEAD 8 - Repeat for the remaining decades Saying the "Eternal Father" (6) on the "Our Father" bead and then 10 times "For the sake of His sorrowful Passion" (7) on the following "Hail Mary" beads. BEAD 9 - Conclude with Holy God (Repeat three times) Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

BEAD 10 - Optional Closing Prayer Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion — inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself.

PRAYER OF HIS HOLINENESS POPE FRANCIS FOR THE EXTRODINARY JUBILEE OF MERCY Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.
