SHORT BREAKS

THE VÍA DE LA PLATA ROUTE: SHORT BREAK (5 days / 4 nights) The Via de la Plata Route is the major road link joining the northwest of Spain with the Mediterranean, running through Andalusia and thus avoiding the tortuous Atlantic coastline. This is the route trodden by the Carthaginian general, Hannibal, but it was the Romans who were to give it its definitive form with their bridges and other displays of engineering. Their culture entered along this route: their town planning, language and laws. The Arabs arrived, but, during the Middle Ages, the Christian kingdoms of the north were to take the return journey to definitively impose their power. In this re-conquering were to arise the great noble Spanish families, whose innumerable palaces mark out our journey through the towns and cities on the route.

Arrival in Salamanca. The city is, and has long been, essentially a university city. Accommodation in Salamanca. We shall discover Zamora during a stroll through its peaceful medieval quarter.
