Newsletter 6 – A month in India Almost a month has passed since I arrived in India, although it feels like a much longer time than that. The days here are filled with all sorts of events, none like the other, making traveling both unpredictable and somewhat adventurous. Visiting India today is perhaps more interesting than ever before, because the contrasts you witness may never have been greater. We’re talking of major clashes in virtually every sector of Indian society. You don’t have to travel far in to the Indian countryside to find people living basically in the Dark Ages, while where you started your journey people walk around in a (more or less chaotic) city talking in mobile phones like at home (apparently some 80 000 of them are sold here daily). The contrasts are omnipresent – between rich and poor, men and women, Hindu and western style, religions, means of transportation (everything from ox/camel carriages to any kind of motorized vehicle – usually in a total mess) and you name it. What’s NOT contrasting but nevertheless omnipresent is the dirt and garbage – India is filthy! It is possible to go almost anywhere in India, except for some sensitive (and unfortunately bird rich) border areas. Eventually you will reach your destination. What’s difficult though, is communication. My travel companion Toni says: “Every time I come back to India fewer people speak English”. And it’s obviously true. Strong political forces among Hindu nationalists have rejected the English language, as well as western culture, and it’s no longer taught in school in several (most?) states. The Hindu nationalist movement has caused a lot of trouble in India, and as a matter of fact their mainly northern strongholds have recessed economically while the western and southern parts + Calcutta are developing and relatively thriving. Communication, thus, is a problem some of the time, but Indians sure like to communicate, as you soon will discover. To write in detail about all our experiences the first month (of almost three) in India would make a VERY long newsletter, so I’ll only give a few of the “highlights”. We first went to Ajmer in Rajasthan (the northwest), a 19-hour train journey from Bombay. Trying to go to the nearby Sonkhaliya Closed Reserve proved to be an adventurous business. With sparse directions and a whimsy taxi driver, who, despite previous assurances, knew nothing about the place, we were facing major failure. Luckily, we bumped in to the Sonkhaliya village chief who accompanied us to look for our main target – the Indian Bustard. No luck and no closed area either. It was election day, so back in the village there were people everywhere. We went to have a look and ended up photographing curious villagers en masse. Everybody wanted their photo taken! Old men in turbans seriously posed in front of the lens, while teenage boys tried to sneak in to the picture as well. It was all overwhelming! An attempt to bird a bit more resulted in a rare Stoliczka’s Bushchat, but again human interaction stole the show as we stepped in to a village that surely have seen very occasional if any westerners before. Even the women had no objections being photographed. Very

memorable! On our way back we passed several colorful wedding processions, but these were nothing compared to another procession that passed our hotel in the evening. Accompanied by glockenspiel, various wind instruments and 10 megaphones playing pre-taped music at considerable volume, the groom himself came riding in splendor on a shining white horse. Apparently it pays off to get married in January, when particular wedding gods are awake from their otherwise almost yearlong slumber… One of our longest and most eventful travel days were between the two hill stations of Pachmarhi and Chicaldara in central India. The 05.30 bus set out at 05.55. Our spirits lowered a bit when the bus stopped with a flat tire. Would we be able to catch the train to Itarsi? On arrival I ran to the ticket office, got a basic fare ticket and was back just when the train entered the platform. In Itarsi things were more complicated. People directed us to different places and we finally got on a train towards Chennai. Apparently the wrong train, but the conductor said it was OK, since it would stop in Betul anyway. We were seated in sleeper class (many different classes) and were supposed to pay extra for this, but the conductor never turned up again. Betul offered cold Cokes, ever curious people who wanted to know our names and where we came from, and of course 10 different directions for a bus to Padatwara. We managed to find the right bus, though, which was to be overfull (I mean overfull…) for most of the 4-hour ride that took us on deteriorated back roads in both agricultural and wooded areas. Our driver played shrill Indian music at painfully loud volume, with a female singer that reminded of the mice in Disney’s “Cinderella”. Horror… A motor riksha drive took us to yet another bus, to Chikaldara, where we arrived after dark. When, tired as we were, we looked at the deluxe room in the only budget hotel in town, we encountered a big, dead rat in the middle of the bathroom floor. It didn’t matter much, as we wanted cheaper accommodation anyway… A very special happening in Chikaldara was when we the following evening were picked up by a jeep on our way back to town in the late afternoon. After a couple of hundred meters we stopped, and out we went to be photographed in a multitude of postures and combinations with our three hosts. English wasn’t their strongest side, but we could communicate a bit. When we continued, instead of going to town, they took us on a side road to their “hotel” where additional men sat on blankets playing cards. We were heartily greeted and offered both tobacco and alcohol, which we politely declined. But they insisted that we would stay for supper, and so we did. The men kept asking us the same basic questions again and again, being especially concerned about our feelings towards India. Our friends turned out to be very important people indeed – businessmen and politicians. One was president of BJP (the leading Hindu nationalist party), another was seated in the Maharasthra parliament (one of the most powerful in India), but for the Congress party. What brought them together was apparently the common cause of secularism. The supper consisted of all kinds of vegetarian food (I’m a total vegetarian here in India, mostly for health reasons), some of it raw, and I thought that “If I survive this without any problems I will survive just about anything”. It went quite fine, and we were dropped off in town at dusk. A very special evening indeed. Our nightly train journey between Nagpur and Hyderabad is worth mentioning. We were unable to get confirmed beds at the train, and got on it in hope that there would be empty spaces anyway. There were empty spaces indeed, but the problem was that that very wagon was not going to Hyderabad but to Vishakapatnam and the conductor wouldn’t allow us to stay there because our final destination was Hyderabad. It developed in to a virtual circus, but our fellow passengers were of great help. At the end (but only after we’d got a new conductor) we could try to sleep for three hours before the wagon was going to be disconnected around 03.30. We then went in to another wagon, where the watchman let us take his seat which we shared in turns. Tired we arrived in Hyderabad in the morning, only to continue with a 4-hour bus ride southwards… Our last week has been spent in southwestern India. At Ranganathittu near Mysore we visited a fantastic little bird sanctuary with nesting storks, herons etc. In Mudumalai our plans were changed all the time due to a local temple festival, but the birding was good anyway. Today we had a superb morning near Ooty (2200 m asl), seeing 2 males of the rare and beautiful Pied Thrush. Tomorrow it’s time to move on again. We have about a week left here in the Western Ghats. After that we’ll go to

Darjeeling and the northeast, a long, long way from here. Long train journeys await. But this will no doubt be the most exciting part of our journey. More about that (of course) in a forthcoming newsletter. Birds? A few highlights that haven’t already been mentioned: Heart-spotted Woodpecker, Barred Buttonquail, Brown Fish Owl, Indian Bustard (at Rollapadu), Grey-headed Lapwing, Small Pratincole, Indian Courser, Laggar Falcon, White-bellied Minivet, Blue-capped Rock-Thrush, Whitebellied Shortwing, White-naped Tit, Smoky and Large-billed Warblers, Grey-headed Bulbul, Nilgiri Laughingthrush, Malabar Lark and White-capped Bunting.

Newsletter 7: At the end of a long journey All things inevitably have to come to an end, so also my ten months of travelling all over the world. There have been moments when the Indian part of my journey felt endless, but here I am in New Delhi at the very eve of departure. When I first visited India five years ago, I didn’t particularly like the country. The widespread poverty and many persistent harassers felt hard to deal with. This time I’ve learned to like and appreciate the fantastic diversity of India, although I’m far from uncritical in my viewpoints of this country. Most tourists choose to see India only in a sort of romantic, exotic shimmer, but I’ve seen and read enough to realize the huge problems and injustices that rule the lives of hundreds of millions of Indians. To begin with, there is little equality between men and women. Women often seem to work twice as hard as men; they have to collect and carry home fire wood in piles of 30-40 kilos, get the water, work in the fields and look after the children. If they perform the same paid labor, men can earn twice as much as women. And the wages are unimaginably low. We asked about this many times and found out that a tea picker, for instance, earned between 34 and 74 rupees per day (=16 kilos of tea) in different parts of the country. Transformed into USD/SEK that’s 0.70-1.45/5.50-12.00. Road workers in Sikkim, smashing stone manually with a hammer into macadam, earned 150 (men) or 80 (women) rupees per day. A worker in agricultural fields seldom gets more than 30 rupees a day. It’s just unbelievable! But it’s the disgraceful caste system that is the root of most evils. Although officially abandoned little or nothing has changed in reality, especially in rural India. No wonder, since it’s deeply rooted in the very foundations of Hinduism. The caste defines who you are, what you can and cannot do and what you must do. No wonder that untouchables mass convert to Buddhism and Christendom or become Marxists to get away from the cursed bottom of society, sometimes resulting in regular warfare between high and low castes as the system brakes apart. Add to this many notoriously corrupt and/or criminal politicians, sensitive border areas and bitter feuds between Hindus and Muslims and you’ve got a difficult mess to sort out to say the least. (To dig deeper into these subjects, read “The Age of Kali” by William Dalrymple – read all of his excellent books by the way!). Yes, India is a strange country – and fantastic in many ways. It holds so many peoples, languages, cultures and religions, and the very fact that India is still a working democracy shows that there is a lot of good will. Relations with Pakistan are getting better every day (Musharraf was here to watch a cricket game between the two nations just two days ago) and the standard of living is slowly improving for a lot of people. When I look back there are many memorable events, some of which I will share with you now. From Ooty, where I wrote my last newsletter, we continued southwards, spending another week in the Western Ghats. Birding was particularly good at Top Slip (Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Indian Pitta, Malabar Trogon etc.), although the highlight for Toni was to finally see the elusive Nilgiri WoodPigeon in Munnar, after some 15 odd attempts. Only a few of the birds endemic to the Western Ghats were missed.

One of the absolute highlights of the trip was visiting Toni’s sponsored child, 15-year-old Lovakumari, near Visakhapatnam. Being the first sponsor ever to visit the project, now embracing around 2500 children, Toni (and myself) was overwhelmingly greeted. The founder and director Pius Matthew met us at the train station and soon we were off on a journey late to be forgotten. First we witnessed parcels of monthly supplies being handed out to the mothers of slum children, lined up in their finest sarees. The gratitude they showed was genuine and touching. From now on I was responsible for the photographing, and I’m quite sure that I got some phenomenal photos! Lovakumari’s village was a one and a half hour drive into the country side, but before visiting her we went to another handout where villagers met us with a banderoll reading “A hearty welcome to Antonio and Samuel Hansson, Canada”. We were offered coconuts with straw and, well, it was just overwhelming! Outside of Lovakumari’s home, some 50 sponsored kids and family members were gathered, all dressed up for the event. After a bit of public conversation, photographing and one girl’s solo performance of a song we got some privacy with Lovakumari and her family in their simple 6-7 km2 home (harboring 5-6 adults) and later in Pius’s office. Toni asked a lot of questions and we learned quite a bit about the family and their daily life (as translated by Pius). Try to imagine this: the father is currently working in rice paddies 300 kilometers away from the village for a month, earning 30 rupees (USD 0.60/SEK 5) per day. For a day’s work in local fields the mother earns 20 rupees. They have 4 daughters to support, and to pay their dowries is an almost impossible task. Still the two oldest daughters have been married. One of them is however a childless widow at 25 after her husband committed suicide, making her basically an outcast in her own village for the rest of her life. Lovakumari who’s education is sponsored by Toni, is the only person in the family with a fairly decent future prospect. This is just the situation for one poor Indian family – there are tens of million more. Toni promised to buy Lovakumari a well needed bike and a water buffalo for the family (providing milk and extra money). Before returning to Visakhapatnam we visited Pius’s home and his orphanage for girls. Incredibly cute little gems! A most memorable day, leaving a lot of thoughts. After more train journeys and a brief but incredibly chaotic visit to Calcutta we finally reached Siliguri, 3 hours from the famous hill station Darjeeling in West Bengal. We birded at nearby Tiger Hill for a couple of days, with awesome views of Kanchenjunga (8598 m, the third highest mountain in the world) and the distant top of Mt. Everest. We stayed a whole week in Lava, a small town near the border with Bhutan with decent/half decent forested surroundings (cardamom plantations and chopping for fire wood is unfortunately slowly destroying this great birding area). The northeastern corner is quite different from “traditional” India, with a multitude of ethnic groups with affinities to Tibet and Southeast Asia. Several of these small “hill states” are areas with restricted access even for Indians, and the only way to visit is on an organized tour. Assam has however opened up recently, and we went almost as far east as you can go in this state. Kaziranga NP, famous for its rich wildlife, was our first destination. Indian Rhinoceros was common, and we recorded 135 species of birds on two subsequent days. We had pretty rainy conditions for about a week (pre-monsoon) making birding a bit difficult, but we still managed to find a nice selection of rare species. Our favourite city in the northeast was Shillong in Meghalaya, relatively modern and clean with nice temperatures and excellent food. No more rain, not even (a bit disappointedly!) at Cherrapunjee, the place on earth that holds the world record of an unbelievable 26 meters of rain in a single year! The very rare Dark-rumped Swift was confiding though, rushing by at great speed along the escarpments and waterfalls. Our last major destination was Sikkim, a tiny Himalayan kingdom until annexed by India as late as 1975. We enjoyed good weather and closer looks at Kanchenjunga, and of course we did a fair bit of birding. During our day hikes we also visited the ruins of Sikkim’s ancient capital and a couple of Buddhist monasteries. After a re-visit to Darjeeling and Tiger Hill we boarded the train to New Delhi, and here I am, alone, waiting to go home, since Toni left a bit earlier than I. We recorded a total of 626 species of birds in India, which is a good result. My life list now stands at 4638 species out of 10 000 possible in the world, 1012 new ones since June. Not bad! A few of the best birds of the trip not yet mentioned: Swamp Francolin, Satyr Tragopan, Falcated Duck, Barred

Buttonquail, White-browed Piculet, Darjeeling, Stripe-breasted and Bay Woodpeckers, Long-tailed Broadbill, Blossom-headed Parakeet, Brown-backed, Silver-backed and White-throated Needletails, Black-tailed Crake, Painted Snipe, Pheasant-tailed Jacanas and Pallas’s Gulls in breeding plumage, Indian Spotted Eagle, Spot-billed Prlican, Greater and Lesser Adjutants, Blue-naped Pitta, Tickell’s, Scaly, Long-tailed and Plain-backed Thrushes, White-bellied, White-browed and Lesser Shortwings, White-tailed and Siberian Rubythroats, Rufous-breasted and White-browed Bush-Robins, Tesia x3, Phylloscopus x17 including Yellow-vented Warbler, Broad-billed Warbler, Red-faced Liocichla, Spotted, Rufous-throated, Long-billed and Tawny-breasted Wren-Babblers (no tape!), Marsh (heard) and Jerdon’s Babblers, Brown and Black-breasted (heard) Parrotbills, Cutia, Grey Sibia, Yuhina x7, Gold-naped, Scarlet and Crimson-browed Finches.
