DFS firmware upgrade Whenever a new firmware is released for the DFS 700 it may be recommendable to upgrade existing devices. New firmware can improve performance and also fix present issues. However, a device that works to full satisfaction does not have to be updated. For a firmware upgrade usually both the main firmware and the radar firmware have to be updated subsequently. In order to determine if an available upgrade is newer than the version in the device please first check the firmware version of the DFS 700. This can be done by using the diagnostics function in the PC user software via "Read DFS Status" while connected to a DFS 700. The firmware version consists of three dot-separated numbers with the following meaning: Example: 003.030.006 [hardware version].[main firmware version].[radar firmware version], There are two ways of updating firmware. Indirect method is the preferred and most frequently used method. It is applicable when there is already a working firmware in the device and is possible with all supported communication methods. Direct method is only possible via the RS-232 interface using a null-modem cable. The direct method even works, when there is no functional Firmware in the DFS 700. Both methods are described subsequently.

Indirect update (preferred) Indirect update is the preferred method and can be done from a PC via USB, Bluetooth and GSM. Firmware upgrades via PDA are not possible. After starting the DFS-CAS software the DFS that shall be updated must be chosen from the "DFS list" and the desired communication method to the DFS (USB, Bluetooth, GSM) needs to be configured and assigned (see installation and user manual, chapter 6.4.3.). (1) From the software menu choose "DFS", "Update DFS firmware“. Select the "Indirect update“ method (see picture 1). (2) In the field "Firmware file" the path to the new main firmware file has to be entered and confirmed with "Ok". Example: C:\DFS700\Firmware\0004E06-SW02-034.hex

On the "Com Monitor" the connection and transmission progress can be seen on the PC screen. Depending on transmission speed this process can take several minutes. A successful transmission end is reported in the "Com Monitor" and initiates a self-check in the DFS 700 the end of which is indicated by two horizontal bars "- -" on the DFS display. This can not be observed from far distances when using GSM communication for the update. Therefore it is necessary to wait for two minutes after observing the transmission end in the "Com Monitor" and before starting the next step. (3) Now the second part of the firmware upgrade, which is the radar firmware, needs to be applied. From the software menu choose "DFS", "Update DFS firmware“. Select the "Indirect update“ method (see picture 1). (4) In the field "Firmware file" the path to the new radar firmware file has to be entered and confirmed with "Ok". On the "Com Monitor" the connection and transmission progress, which should be much faster than with the main firmware version, can be seen on the PC screen. After a successful transmission end is reported in the "Com Monitor" the DFS 700 is operational again after two minutes upon finishing the self-check again. (5) Check the firmware version using "Read DFS Status" in the PC user software while still connected to the DFS 700. Should there be an error during the firmware upgrade the whole process should be repeated. If repeated attempts are not successful then the direct upgrade method has to be applied.

Direct update Direct update is only possible via the RS-232 interface using a null-modem cable but allows an upgrade even if there is no functional firmware in the DFS 700. The RS-232 port of the DFS 700 is located behind the service cover (see picture 2, pos. 5).

After starting the DFS-CAS Software an RS-232 connection type has to be configured. (1) In the software menu choose "Settings", "Connections" in order to open the window "DFS-CAS Connections". Select "New". (2) The window "DFS-CAS connection parameters" opens up where the displayed settings have to be made (see picture 3). The com port of the serial interface is usually 1 but can in some cases be different and has to be set accordingly. Confirm with "Ok".

(3) In the "DFS-CAS connections" window the newly created RS-232 connection has to be selected and confirmed with "Select" (see picture 4).

(4) Switch the DFS 700 off (5) Connect the RS-232 interface to the PC serial port using the null-modem cable. (6) From the software menu choose "DFS", "Update DFS firmware“. Select the "Direct update“ method (see picture 5). (7) In the field "Firmware file" the path to the new main firmware file has to be entered and confirmed with "Ok". (8) Switch the DFS 700 on as soon as the "Com Monitor" opens up. The transmission progress can be seen in the "Com Monitor" subsequently. Select the "Direct update“ method (see picture 5). (11) In the field "Firmware file" the path to the new radar firmware file has to be entered and confirmed with "Ok". (12) Switch the DFS 700 on as soon as the "Com Monitor" opens up. The transmission progress can be seen in the "Com Monitor" subsequently. A successful transmission end is reported in the "Com Monitor" and initiates a self-check in the DFS 700 the end of which is indicated by two horizontal bars "- -" on the DFS display. (13) Check the firmware version using "Read DFS Status" in the PC user software while still connected to the DFS 700.
