An introduction to
Fused Deposition Modelling FDM (rebranded by the open source community as Fused Filament Fabrication FFF) is the process of extruding material through a nozzle to print one cross section of an object, then repeating the process by moving up vertically to add a new layer. Simply put, it is similar to drawing with a very hot glue gun. The process begins with 3D modelling software that determines how the filament extruder will draw out each layer to build up the model, preparing it for the building process. Multiple print heads enable the printer to print out multiple colours or use scaffolding materials to aid with overhanging parts of complex prints. Although multiple print heads are available on a wide range of printers, FDM printers can only use one print head at a time switching between them for multimaterial prints.

An introduction to
Stereolithography Stereolithography is the process of drawing each layer of a model into a photopolymer (light reactive plastic) resin using a laser. One layer at a time, a beam of UV light is projected onto a point in the resin, causing it to become solid. The cross section of the object is then printed forming one layer of hardened material. The object is built up one layer at a time with the most recently printed layer being repositioned for unhardened photopolymer to fill the newly created space between the printer and laser. Objects produced by SLA printers have a wide range of properties including; water resistance, flexibility, durability, stiffness, high clarity, thermal and high impact resistance. The photopolymers have been designed to mimic ABS, polypropylene and wax, making them useful for everything from high quality prototyping to lost wax casting.
