3D, Games Art and Animation On a daily basis, we see examples of 3D Animation and Visualisation all around us from adverts on billboards to commercials played on T.V to visual effects in blockbuster films and animated virtual environments and characters in games. Behind all these, there are 2D and 3D visualisation specialists in a host of different roles working together creating these original and exciting pieces of work using the latest software and technology available. At GCU, you can study and develop specialist skill set required for employment in many of the job roles associated to this field. GCU offers two 3D Art and Animation options:

This programme will create graduates who will combine their traditional art skills with the latest creative technology in 3D art and animation and will have the awareness of technological capabilities and limitations of gaming platforms.

Both programmes will introduce you to the modern practises of 3D content creation for the chosen field, help you realise your career path and offer you the ability to specialise in a suited job role.

Students entering at Year 1 follow programme of study in their subject suite, allowing them to gain broader knowledge and skills in a range of subjects. Students are able to transfer between programmes available within their suites and between the 3D, Games Art and Animation programmes depending on their own strengths, weaknesses and preferences. In Years 2 and 3, students gain more specialist knowledge and skills in their chosen area. In Year 4, the students practice these skills to professional level, gain greater depth of subject knowledge through research and academic enquiry and build a portfolio of work to show to prospective employers.

The two programmes offer applicants a range of entry points and flexibility. International Exchange

The 3D, Games Art and Animation programmes aims to produce graduates with both creative and technical skills to work within the growing and ever changing creative industries.

Opportunities for International Exchange are available for students on these programmes, these could be for one trimester or a whole year study at another institution, often at one of our European partners, where courses are offered in English. Currently students taking this option do so at Year 3 level and gain credits towards their degree.

You will develop skills and techniques in 3D modelling, Digital Sculpting, texturing, rigging, animation, lighting, rendering and VFX compositing. You will learn how to apply techniques and skills to construct animated virtual worlds and characters for 3D games and film. Graduates leave with the creative and professional skills necessary for them to respond to the needs of many creative industries such as 3D Animation, Games, VFX for TV and Film. Graduates from this course will have the necessary skills and knowledge to enjoy a number of careers pathways, such as: 3D modeller, 3D animator, rigging specialist, digital sculpting artist, games character or environment artist, concept artist, architectural visualisation specialist, VR simulation specialist, VFX compositing artist for film and television.
