The Heldenplatz in front of the Congress Center will be the starting point of this tour. Participants will walk past the equestrian statues of Prince Eugene of Savoy and Archduke Charles to the Burghof. The extensive palatial complex of buildings was repeatedly enlarged over several centuries. Participants will visit the Imperial Apartments in which Emperor Francis Joseph I and his wife Empress Elizabeth resided during the winter months. The group will see not only the state rooms, such as the audience and conference rooms, but also the private rooms, such as the Emperor’s bedroom, his study and the Empress’s exercise room. The so-called “Bergl Rooms” (named after the painter Johann Wenzel Bergl) bear impressive testimony to the former splendour of the Empire. The “Plaster Cellar”, to be specially opened for our group, is of particular interest. It houses models and plans of the majestic buildings and monuments on Ringstrasse, which were created by famous sculp/ Imperial Palace tors and architects of the historicism period (at the end of the 19 th century). Alongside consoles and the fascia statues of the buildings on the Ring we will also see the model of the memorial to Empress Maria Theresa located on the square between Vienna’s Museum of the History of Art and the Natural History Museum. At the time of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, this basement was used as a wine cellar, where the wine for servants was stored. The wine for the imperial family was stored elsewhere. At the end of the tour participants will visit the Treasury. Alongside jewels, paintings and coronation robes two special crowns are exhibited: the Crown of the Holy Roman Empire crafted between the years 960 and 980 and the Austrian Emperors´ Crown which was created in Prague around 1600. The liturgical vestments of the Order of the Golden Fleece are further impressive exhibits. The tour will end at about 12.45 hrs. in the Kaiserkrone / Emperors´ Crown Burghof.

DEUTSCH DONNERSTAG, 28.

Schottenkirche / Scottish Abbey

ENGLISH THURSDAY, 28 April 2016, 9.15 – approx. 12.30 hrs.

Half-day tour “The Scottish District – One of Vienna’s Gems”

This guided tour will start at the Imperial Hofburg Palace, lead past the equestrian statutes of Prince Eugene of Savoy and Archduke Charles, and take participants through the Volksgarten to the monument of Empress Elizabeth, the consort of Emperor Francis Joseph I. Subsequently, the walk will continue past the Burgtheater to the Mölkerbastei, where small remains of Vienna’s city walls can be seen. This tour’s highlight will be the Scottish Abbey with its impressive baroque church and its romanesque chapel. Just a few years ago the burial vault of the Abbey’s founders, Duke Henry II Jasomirgott and his Byzantine wife, Theodora Comnena, was discovered in the crypt. We will then visit the baroque Kinsky Palace built by Johann Lukas von Hildebrand in the years 1713 to 1716 and located on the Freyung. It boasts the most beautiful stairwell of Vienna. On the Square Am Hof we will see the impressive monument showing the Virgin Mary as the saviour of the world, surrounded by the four evils of mankind. The Church Am Hof is a Gothic building, later redesigned in baroque style. In 1782, Pope Pius VI gave the Easter blessing “urbi et orbi” from the balcony above the entrance to the church. In days gone by, heralds used to announce government decrees, such as the proclamation of the Austrian Monarchy in 1804, from this balcony. The anteroom of the vestry is of particular interest as it has an unusual stucco decoration in early baroque style showing crossed trees with four Jesuit saints. The tour will end at about 12.30 hrs. in the square Palais Kinsky, Prunkstiege / Kinsky Palace, Stairwell Am Hof.

This guided tour will start at the Congress Center, cross the Burghof to Michaelertor, and pass the stables of the Spanish Riding School. The tour will continue towards Josefsplatz with the equestrian statue of Emperor Joseph II who went down in history as the “Emperor of Reforms”. The former “Imperial Library”, today called the “National Library”, is located in this square. The hearts of the Habsburgs lie buried in the Augustinerkirche. On Albertinaplatz stands the monument created by the Austrian artist Alfred Hrdlicka in 1989 as a declaration against fascism. The tour will continue along the Neuer Markt with the Kapuzinerkloster housing the imperial family‘s burial vault, Kärntnerstrasse and Himmelpfortgasse to the former Winter Palace of Prince Eugene of Savoy, occupied until a few years ago by the Austrian Ministry of Finance. A memorial plate on a house in Rauhensteingasse reminds us of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. We will walk through the romantic lane Ballgasse and reach Franziskanerplatz with the Franciscan Church, where an altarpiece depicting Emperor Leopold I and his first wife Margarita Teresa as well as a view of Vienna is worth seeing. Participants will be guided through Singerstrasse and Blutgasse studded by ancient houses with interior courtyards to Stephanskirche. We will descend the stairs to the deep cellar of the Porta Dextra and subsequently reach the last sight, the Hoher Markt where we will listen to the chimes of the “Anker” Clock at noon and see its historic figures. The figures and melodies of this carillon are a reminder of personalities and events in Austrian history. The group will then head for Stephansplatz where the tour will end at approx. 12.30 hrs. che / Franciscan Church

DEUTSCH FREITAG, 29. April 2016, 9.15 – 12.45 Uhr

A bus will take participants to the Upper Belvedere which houses the Austrian Art Gallery. This gallery is primarily known for its large exhibit of Gustav Klimt’s paintings, such as “The Kiss”, portraits of high society ladies of his time and landscape paintings. One room is devoted to Egon Schiele’s oeuvre. The Upper Belvedere was constructed some 20 years after the completion of the Lower Belvedere. Prince Eugene used this building exclusively for receptions. It has an impressive baroque interior and a chapel like all other Viennese palaces. In more recent history, the Upper Belvedere became famous because the Austrian State Treaty was signed there in 1955. After our tour of the Upper Belvedere, its French-style garden will beckon us to walk to the Lower Belvedere – past water cascades and a tree-lined alley typical of the baroque era, with antique statues. Prince Eugene used the Lower Belvedere as his summer residence when he was in Vienna – at that time, it was located outside the town walls. Since the Lower Belvedere served as a residence, its interior is very splendid, with a Grotesquery Hall, a Marble Hall and a Gold Chamber. All rooms have richly ornamented ceilings. Prince Eugene also had an orangery where exotic plants were grown but today is used for exhibitions. At 12.30 hrs. the bus will take participants back to the Congress Center Hofburg, where the tour will end at approx. 12.45 hrs. Der Kuss / The Kiss
