“Black November” A Turkey’s Lament

When I was a young turkey, new to the coop, My big brother, Mike, took me out on the stoop,

And decided on the spot that to avoid being cooked, I’d have to lay low and remain overlooked;

Then he sat me down, and he spoke real slow, And he told me there was something that I had to know;

I began a new diet of nuts and granola, High-roughage salads, juice and diet cola,

His look and his tone I will always remember, When he told me of the horrors of ... Black November;

And as they ate pastries, chocolates and crepes, I stayed in my room doing Jane Fonda tapes,

“Come about August, now listen to me, Each day you’ll be thick, where once you were thin, And you’ll grow a big rubbery thing under your chin.

I maintained my weight of two pounds and a half, And tried not to notice when the bigger birds laughed;

“And then one morning, when you’re warm in your bed, In’ll burst the farmer’s wife, and hack off your head; “Then she’ll pluck out all your feathers so you’re bald’n pink, And scoop out all your insides and leave ya lyin’ in the sink, “And then comes the worst part,” he said not bluffing. “She’ll spread your cheeks and pack you rear with stuffing.” Well, the rest of his words were too grim to repeat, I sat on the stoop like a winged piece of meat,

But ‘twas I who was laughing, under my breath, As they chomped and they chewed, ever closer to death; And sure enough when Black November rolled around; I was the last turkey left in the entire compound; So now I’m a pet in the farmer’s wife’s lap; I haven’t a worry, so I eat and I nap, She held me today, while sewing and humming, And smiled at me and said “Christmas is coming ...”

Our Busy Residents

Whether we are celebrating birthdays, taking a boat ride on the canal, decorating scarecrows, competing in chili cook-offs, or tending to the resident store, there is always something for everyone at Sterling Heights!

Picture of the Week

Recently, a few of my residents approached me about an idea they had for a new activity that was simple, but one that many residents could enjoy and participate in. The idea was a Picture of the Week. So you may ask, “What exactly is this?” My inspired residents said they had personal artwork in their apartments that was taking up space and why not display one picture a week for all to enjoy? We could place the artwork in an area where everyone could view the work. We would replace it weekly, so anyone interested had the ability to participate. We took this idea and orchestrated it in late summer and now each week, we feature a different piece of artwork created by our own residents. The idea has become so popular that there is a waiting list that is filled to nearly the end of the year! Residents have the opportunity to learn something about their neighbors or dinner mates that they may not have necessarily learned about them had we not done this activity — their interests and hidden talents. It is even creating more interaction amongst the community. My residents have inspired me so much that I decided to show some of my own work — pictures that I have painted and even taught as classes several years ago. We prominently display a different piece of artwork in our Dining Room each Friday for all to view. So, whether you are an artist or an admirer, this is an activity for all to enjoy! Sterling Heights Health Fair

In September, Sterling Heights’ residents and invited guests from the community enjoyed an educational day at our fall health fair. Local audiologists, dentists, mobility specialists, personal health care providers, podiatrists, and the like, had the ability to demonstrate and educate their services to interested individuals. A wide variety of door prizes were raffled off to those attending, and light snacks and refreshments were available for all to enjoy.

The Benefits of Vinegar

Unless you are living under a rock, there is a good chance that you may have heard of the benefits of vinegar, particularly apple cider vinegar. This ancient condiment dates back to more than 10,000 years and it has been used for both food and medicinal purposes. And lately, it has been making a resurgence. In French, the word “vinegar” actually means “sour wine.” The organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar (like Bragg’s) also contains “mother,” strands of proteins, enzymes and good bacteria that give it a cloudy, appearance. Some believe that the “mother” is responsible for most of the health benefits. So, whatever you have heard, here is some scientific backing that may be beneficial to you:

• Research has shown that vinegar contains antioxidants which slows

premature aging and reduces the risk of cancer. • Vinegar improves blood sugar levels: By drinking apple cider vinegar before eating a high carbohydrate meal, it can actually improve insulin sensitivity. But, high blood sugar levels can also be a problem in people who don’t even have diabetes by causing aging and a variety of chronic diseases. Therefore, almost anyone can benefit from keeping blood sugar levels stable. • It kills bacteria: Vinegar contains antibacterial properties that can help fight the infection behind a sore throat. The acidity in vinegar decreases that PH of tissue, which helps prevent bacteria from growing on its surface. • It helps you to lose weight by making you feel full: Just a tablespoon in a glass of water can make one feel full; therefore, eating less calories (on average, 200-275 fewer calories for the rest of the day). A study of obese individuals showed that daily vinegar intake led to reduced belly fat, lower blood triglycerides and weight loss. • It lowers cholesterol and reduces the risk of heart disease: Apple cider vinegar revealed in studies that it can lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Some studies even indicate that vinegar reduces blood pressure. So, add it to your diet as a topping on salads, or more commonly drink it as a beverage using 1-2 teaspoons to 1-2 tablespoons per day in a glass of water. It is recommended to use the unfiltered organic apple cider vinegar with the “mother.” Bragg’s is by far the more popular option and can be found in our local stores. It may not be a miracle or a cure-all, but vinegar has been found to have some health benefits.

Remember When ...

I remember my first car. It was a 1954 Oldsmobile 88. The color was a two-tone light and dark green (a color you rarely see today). It had a V-8 engine with 200 horsepower and got a whopping 10 miles to the gallon. But that was not a problem though, since gas cost a mere .28 cents per gallon! Do you remember pulling into a gas station years ago? You drove over a rubber hose near the pumps, and you heard a loud “ding ding” in the office. Four guys came out to give you “red ball service.” They pumped gas, checked your oil and tire pressure, and cleaned your windshield. And just before you pulled away from the pumps, they gave you S&H Green Stamps. All the workers wore the same uniforms and caps with the name of the gas company imprinted on them. We were all so happy when we reached the age of 16 and received our driver’s permit. A couple of months later, we had our permanent license. Insurance for boys cost double the premium, or more, than it did for a girl. Things are still the same as far as insurance goes. I guess boys are still more of a risk than girls when it comes to driving. New cars at that time cost anywhere from $2,000 to $4,000. My used Olds cost me $775. My friends and I would put rear speakers in our cars because our cars didn’t have them. It was cool to have sound coming from the rear of the car. Cars had bench seats too — front and back. That was a nice feature because your girlfriend could snuggle up to you; it almost looked like one person in the car when you looked through the rear view mirror. We took our girlfriends to drive-in movies and we ate at drivein restaurants like Stewarts (on Union Boulevard in Bethlehem). Servers would come out to the car to take your order and then when your food was ready, they would serve it on a tray that attached to the driver’s door. I loved their chocolate-cow milkshakes and scramburgers. (A scamburger, for those who may not have ever had one, is ground beef scrambled into a burger shape.) I remember how much care went into our cars. I washed my car every week, and polished and waxed it every six weeks. It was my pride and joy. I’ll never forget it and all those rides with my friends. Sorry to say, they don’t make Oldsmobiles anymore. By Sterling Heights Resident: Jack Knouse
