Irish Whiskey Awards

Now in its fourth year, the Irish Whiskey Awards reflect the optimism, innovation and quality of distilling in Ireland. This year saw over 100 products entered ranging from classic whiskeys to some of the new wave of craft gins and vodkas. What is clear is that Ireland is going through a rebirth in craft distilling and it was good to see that the winners came from both well-established and newly-formed companies. Judging is done as impartially as possible with blind tastings being held for our judges who are members of the Celtic Whiskey Club and Irish Whiskey Society. Whiskey judging might sound like fun but it is also hard work and our warmest thanks go out to this year’s team of judges. They showed great enthusiasm and focus throughout. This year we changed the awards slightly and invited members of the thriving cocktail bar trade to judge the other spirits. Perhaps even harder work! They did themselves proud and picked out some very worthy winners.

2016

A hugely popular winner amongst our judges. This well-crafted single malt shows how careful cask selection and well-judged maturation can really make a difference. This whiskey is all about balance between the bourbon and sherry barrels that impart so much flavour into the single malt.

Celtic Cask Whiskeys

Our exclusive range of carefully matured single cask whiskeys get better every year. They are usually limited to around 300 bottles per cask and each new release is unique. We carefully select different types of barrels from our wine contacts around the world. Some previous favourites have been aged in Port casks, Madeira, red wine and even sweet Vin Santo wine. Each cask is aged to perfection and we have to sample them regularly before choosing the exact moment of bottling. Due to their limited nature these sell out quite quickly and make an excellent gift for whiskey drinkers and collectors. Look out for more in this range in 2017!

Dingle Distillery

Dingle Single Malt

Dingle have been the trailblazers of the Irish whiskey revival and were the first of the new breed to start making distilling whiskey. Now they have come of age and finally have some whiskey ready for us to drink. Their first release was a single cask of the 2nd barrel to be filled at the distillery, which sold out rapidly. Thankfully they have now produced an ongoing release of their cask strength single malt to enjoy.

Incredible first release from the Dingle Distillery. Exhibiting unique character and a great sign of things to come from this producer. We have never tasted a whiskey of this quality from such an early stage of maturation (just over 3 years).

70cl / 46%

A whiskey that pays tribute to when wine merchants bottled famous whiskey under their own label - often ageing the spirit in left over wine, sherry or madeira casks. This release was initially matured in traditional sherry and bourbon casks. It was then finished in Bordeaux wine casks, adding a new dimension to the classic single pot still Irish whiskey.

Created to commemorate the career of the former master distiller who retired in 2013 after 47 years at the distillery. Barry helped to formulate this whiskey and it is highly regarded as one of the best in the range. Light, medium and heavy styles of pot still are selected and the spirit is mostly matured in 1st fill bourbon casks with a small amount going into virgin Amercian oak.

This uniquely Irish expression is the latest addition to the single pot still family of whiskeys, satisfying the growing appetite among whiskey lovers for discovering new and innovative styles of Irish whiskey.

Irish Whiskey

Independent Irish Whiskeys The Irish whiskey renaissance continues to grow and there are now more whiskey bottlers than we have seen in over forty years. Most of these companies buy their whiskey from existing distilleries but choose to ‘finish’ those whiskeys in their own specially sourced barrels. Many, such as Glendalough and West Cork, are already maturing their own spirit which will eventually become whiskey. There is a lot of creativity in this side of Ireland’s whiskey business, resulting in even more great tasting whiskeys to try!

Kilbeggan Distilling Company

With two distilleries and a heritage going back to 1757 the Kilbeggan Distilling Company could certainly claim to be one of Ireland’s great distillers. Most of their whiskeys comes from their distillery at Cooley but we should soon also see more from the small craft distillery in Kilbeggan. The company is owned by Beam Suntory who also make some great Japanese and American whiskeys as well as their fantastic contribution from Ireland. Production in both distilleries is centred on double-distilled single malt but the company also produce grain whiskey at their Cooley facility.

If you are looking for a top whiskey with smoothness and complexity in equal measure then look no further. Our tasting notes: Colour: Pale lemon yellow. Nose: A delicate, almost floral start with some fresh, tropical fruits. These are followed by touches of boiled sweets, lemon peel, honey and vanilla. Taste: Delicate and soft but packed full of sweet, fruity flavours. Lemon butter, apricots, pineapple and vanilla to the fore with touches of pear drops and honey. The 12-year-old edition of Connemara single malt has a full, rounded and complex flavour that is both smooth and smoky at the same time. The peat smoke is well integrated and is perhaps a little less pronounced than with the standard bottling.

Arran is still regarded as a ‘new’ distillery despite being operational for over 18 years! This 14 year old could be described as the perfect whisky. It is aged in both bourbon and sherry barrels and bottled at the optimum age of 14 years. A very popular single malt!

Machrie Moor is Arran's peated single malt and it takes its name from the wild and rugged moor on the west side of the island. This is quite smoky but has some good balance with the citrus and the tropical fruit flavours normally found in Arran whiskies shining through.

Springbank is one of Scotland’s greatest distilleries and still clings on to traditional whisky making methods. The 10 year old is their flagship label and is generally regarded as one of the best ‘entry level’ single malts. We love it.

On the nose there are interesting savoury notes of roasted meats, Provencal herbs, plus cocoa, liquorice, black cherries, and damsons. Dry and medium bodied with juicy acidity and well-balanced tannins. Nicely focused fruit flavours. More pronounced than on the nose with flavours of red and black cherries, ripe strawberries, damsons and redcurrants. Some smoky oak flavours add some earthiness but the fruit persists to the finish.

Sherry/Jerez Equipo Navazos La Bota de Fino No. 68

Equipo Navazos La Bota de Manzanilla No. 60

75cl / 15% –

50cl / 16.5% –

This new release, of an estimated average age between ten and eleven years. The nose shows very complex and intense aromas, and a remarkable roundness in the palate (the traditional buttery touch of old finos). This is particularly true of the solera, where the flor is almost exhausted, while in the second criadera the yeast is still very lively and active, which provides the spiciness and pungency that are also notable features of this extraordinary wine.

A very special wine that takes the astonishing quality of the previous releases (editions 20, 40 and 50) to an amazing level of finesse and chalky minerality. What makes this wine truly unique and gifted with unmatched biological character (intense and steely salty notes on the palate) is that the butts are filled up to “a tocadedos” level—well above the 5/6 mark that is common in the Sherry district.

Jancis Robinson 17 points ” Very nutty and mature fino. It shows bitter almonds, olive leaf, yeasty character and salty seaweed flavours. Very textured for a fino, displaying a palatable warm alcoholic sensation, very broad and voluminous palate, full body and elegant bitterness at the back palate. Very deep and toasty aftertaste.”

Bodegas Tradicion Oloroso VORS

Emilio Hidalgo Marques de Rodil Palo Cortado

75cl / 18% –

Robert Parker 95 points – “I’m talking about the NV Tradicion Oloroso VORS, on average 45-50 years old, which gives the wine a concentration of glycerin and dry extract that is amazing. Silky, very interesting to see the wine that has been blended over the years is more complex. The proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove, it is full-bodied, and still follows the same, clean, elegant, precise line of the rest of the wines from Tradicion.” 94 points Penin Guide 97 points Wine & Spirits Magazine 94 points Jamie Goode 95 points Repsol Guide

A big favourite with Sherry fans and this one is one of the best! Mahogany colour, almond like aroma, dry, balanced, full-bodied with lots of fruit, nuts & spice. Persitant finish. Palo Cortado - is a variety of sherry that is initially made like an amontillado, typically for 3-4 years but which subsequently develops a character closer to an oloroso.

Manzanilla En Rama La Guita 37.5cl / 15% –

A fantastic Manzanilla that is drawn from wines aged around 4 and 5 years old. Like fino sherry Manzanilla is aged under a protective layer of flor (yeast), the result is a fresh and light wine with flavours of green apples, almonds and some savoury notes of crispy bacon and olives. Robert Parker 93 points “I encountered a first bottle in the north of Spain and I was gobsmacked. The character of brine, green olives and mustard seeds is all there in an amplified way. The palate is medium bodied, as 'flor' eats glycerin and the wine is always sharper, always very dry and intense. This is a selection of 'botas' from centenary 'soleras' in their bodegas Misericordia and Carretera de Jerez, averaging 4.5 years of age. The wine is unfined and not stabilized, and only a light filtration is applied to avoid particles floating in the wine. .99 This is their first 'en rama' bottling.”

Gran Barquero Amontillado, Montilla-Moriles 75cl / 19% – Robert Parker 95 points – “ The NV Amontillado Gran Barquero is an impressive 25-30 years old. It wears a dark amber robe and a subtle, elegant and focused nose. It’s an Amontillado of finesse, with biological, salty notes and roasted almonds, close to the Fino character. The palate shows a medium-bodied wine of a velvety texture, fine acidity and clean, focused flavors, It represents superb value for the quality it delivers.”

Concentrated, rasiny. Toasty, bitter chocolate, unctuous and long. Wine Spectator 92 points “This has good cut driving the caramel, butterscotch, raisin and orange peel flavors. Berliner Trophy 2011 - Silver Medal International Wine & Spirits Competition - Silver Medal

€39.99

100% Sercial, aged for 10-14 years. Bronze Medal International Wine Challenge 2010. Jancis Robinson May 2012, ‘Sercial is the lightest and driest and along with great Fino or Manzanilla is one of the most energising, appetising drinks in the world. Sercial and Barbeito seem like a marriage made in heaven and indeed Barbeito 10 Year-Old Sercial tastes heavenly. Peachy pale tawny. Racy with that wonderful purity and acidity yet heady and with massive depth of fruit. Tense, serious, complex. A marvel really. Only just off-dry this would make a fabulous aperitif. I gave it a possibly characteristically stingy 17 points out of 20.’

Silver Medal and Best in Class International Wine & Spirit Competition 2010 .Jancis Robinson 17.5/20, ‘Pale apricot color. Tastes quite dry for Verdelho. Fine and pure with flavors of apricot and bitter orange. Unbelievably long.’

This is the 2nd wine from Chateau Suduiraut whose vines border those of the illustrious Chateau d’Yqeum. Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos 2007 Disznoko

Banyuls Cornet & Cie Rimage 2013

“The 2007 is a blend of 75% Furmint, 15% Zeta and 10% Harslevelu. It has a very pure and clean nose, perhaps one of the most Sauternes-like I have come across, with yellow plum and quince aromas. The palate is clean and fresh on the entry with effervescent satsuma, apricot and quince notes pricked with just the right amount of acidity. This is very feminine, balletic Tokaji – a little ingénue – is a perfect introduction to the delights of aszu wine.”

French cousin, Banyuls is a very interesting fortified wine from close to the Spanish border. Made form 100% Grenache grapes, this rich and powerful wine is one of the world’s few great matches with chocolate. Compared to an equivalent tawny port, this is great value for money.
