CREDIT-BEARING PROGRAMME FIELDTRIPS TO SITES OF HISTORICAL, POLITICAL AND CULTURAL INTEREST IN BELFAST AND BEYOND LECTURES AND SEMINARS BY INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED SCHOLARS FROM QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY, BELFAST OPPORTUNITY TO MEET AND STUDY WITH STUDENTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD

The International Summer School in Irish Studies has been offered at Queen’s University for over 15 years. This unique, interdisciplinary Summer School is delivered by world leading scholars from a range of disciplines including history and heritage, literature, Irish language, politics, anthropology, film and theatre. Students can follow their interests in these areas to think, learn and discuss Irish Studies viewed through the lens that is most important to them. Over four weeks the Summer School examines the history and influence of our island on the world and uses this to gain a greater perspective on the planet we share. We promise our students an unforgettable and inspiring experience with lectures from world leading scholars, meetings with musicians, poets and politicians, trips to the historic Titanic ship yards and the rugged Antrim coastline.

“ Lectures will include: • The history of the people on our island • Ireland’s place in the world • The extraordinary and powerful history of migration and diaspora • The turbulent, intertwined and sometimes creative relationships between Britain and Ireland • The specific part played by the north, particularly Belfast and Derry/Londonderry in our history • Language, literature, music, dance and art • Conflict and Peace • Heritage, identity and varieties of Irishness But it’s not all study! The Summer School does not just offer an introduction to Irish Studies but also to the city of Belfast and Northern Ireland. We promise challenge and entertainment all at the same time. Students are also given the opportunity to meet with some of Northern Ireland’s decision-makers – key politicians, church and community leaders. There are excursions to archaeological, historical and cultural sites in Belfast and beyond, with Irish music and dance evenings as well. Some of the field trips include: • Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast and the Antrim Glens, an area of unsurpassed beauty, a unique fusion of tangible heritage and magnificent scenery. • Belfast’s Titanic Quarter, where the Titanic was designed and built. • Belfast’s murals and interface, guided tour. • The Centre for Migration Studies at the Ulster American Folk Park. • Derry-Londonderry (UK City of Culture 2013), tour of this splendid city crammed full of history, heritage, interest and a vibrant cultural scene.

Anna Donley Fulbright Student Nebraska Wesleyan University My four weeks spent in Belfast were the best of my life, and I learned more about Ireland and its history than I ever would have expected to. Best of all, I got to learn all about it from experts that delivered their lectures with contagious enthusiasm. Throughout the program, we students collectively fell in love with Irish culture, and I am convinced that this program is the greatest way to experience Ireland. We got to dance to traditional music, hike through the Giant’s Causeway, and visit countless museums, which taught us volumes about the issues that Ireland faces today. My favourite part, however, was being surrounded by a group of diverse, passionate, ambitious people that challenged me to think differently and learn more. It was all good craic. If I could, I would do it again and a thousand times more, so I highly encourage anyone with an interest in Ireland and a sense of adventure to apply next summer!’

BELFAST From Saint Patrick to the birthplace of the Titanic, from the Giant’s Causeway to the Mountains of Mourne and the Walled City of Derry, there are unique stories to tell across Northern Ireland and our summer school students will get a flavour of them all throughout their four weeks at Queen’s. Belfast city started out as a small hamlet with fertile land along the mouth of the Lagan. Soon, settlers realised our lough was deep and our shores were safe from the north Atlantic storms. From these early stages the industrious locals developed a boat building trade. And the rest is our history. Today’s Belfast is packed with history, culture, arts, exciting events and great food. The city has received a wealth of accolades in the last number of years: • • • •
