Make a Wig

Difference By taking part in Wig Wednesday, you will be helping CLIC Sargent support young people like Caitlin.

CAITLIN’S STORY

Caitlin was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia when she was just six-years-old. Her mum Lisa explains how support from CLIC Sargent got the whole family through their toughest times.

“When we heard it was leukaemia our whole world fell apart. You think of the worst case scenario, you think ‘she’s too young, I’m going to lose her’.“ When Caitlin was first admitted she became really poorly and was bedridden for two weeks with pneumonia. But because it was Acute Myeloid Leukaemia they didn’t have a choice but to start the chemo straight away. When we first our met CLIC Sargent Social Worker Maureen we were going through all the practical things of trying to look after Caitlin, but we were so conscious that we didn’t want it to affect her sister Raeanna. Raeanna knew what cancer was and she’d heard about people dying from it, so she was really struggling.

Maureen took Raeanna aside a couple of times and just sat in the play room with her; she spoke to her and reassured her that there were other people she could talk to. Maureen also gave us CLIC Sargent’s ‘Joe Has Leukaemia’ storybook, which explains what leukaemia is and how it’s treated. The book has helped us explain that it’s not something you can catch. We were also supported by another CLIC Sargent Social Worker, Kirsten. Her knowledge and experience was a massive help. She knew about support and resources that were available that we wouldn’t have had a clue about. I think me and my husband Steven were more affected by Caitlin losing her hair than she was. It started falling out gradually, but then one morning she woke up and it was like a birds nest so we decided to shave it. It was very surreal, a sign that her cancer was real. Caitlin was absolutely fine though, she never complained. She’s a tough little cookie. Caitlin is doing great now, she’s back at school and her bloods are looking good still. There’s always the worry of what could happen in the future, but we’ve learnt to live life normally again and be positive that the nightmare is behind us. It could have been much worse than it was for us. Throughout our journey we met families who aren’t in remission and might never be. It’s heart-breaking.

Ok, so Wig Wednesday is a bit of fun, a big loud belly-laugh of fun, and we want you to shout about it from the rafters… But what is it really all about? Today, 10 children and young people in the UK will hear the shocking news that they have cancer. CLIC Sargent provide clinical, practical and emotional support for children and young people with cancer, and their families, and we couldn’t do what we do without your help. Here’s what your donations could help to provide...

£66

could pay for two nights stay at one of CLIC Sargent’s Home from Home, providing free self catering accommodation near to specialist children’s cancer treatment centres.

£170

that’s the grant CLIC Sargent gives to families after a young person is diagnosed with cancer, to stop unexpected costs becoming a problem.

£210

could pay for a CLIC Sargent Nurse for a day to coordinate treatment to maximise the amount of time a young person can spend at home.
