Collection for OLP Food Pantry

No doubt, you have noticed the basket at the entrance to the sanctuary each weekend. We encourage our young people to come forward with a financial or food donation to walk up during the regular collection. We will not be announcing this each week, but we appreciate you giving your little ones a nudge to walk up there to place their contribution! Your generosity is appreciated.

In the Jesuit Tradition

As the 2016 Presidential Election approaches, it seems a suitable time for prayer, reflection, and discernment. For your guidance we invite you to look at the booklet “An Ignatian Examen for Civic Life” published by the Ignatian Solidarity Network. You may pick up a copy at church entrances or find the booklet online at www.ignatiansolidarity.net/ignatian-examen-for-civic-life. Ignatius encouraged his Jesuits to make this prayer daily as a means of detecting God’s presence and discerning his will. The Examen has many variations which embody five elements: be grateful for God’s blessings; ask guidance from the Holy Spirit; review when you felt God’s presence; have conversation with God about your strongest feelings expressing sorrow for fault and seeking healing; and, pray for the grace to be more available to God and to draw closer to Him tomorrow.

Masses in the Area

John Carroll University offers Sunday Masses at 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm during the academic year. Please visit the Mass Schedule page of our website at www.churchofthegesu.org/ mass-schedule for a full listing of other Masses in the area.

Please pray for peace today! 4

Faith Formation Christ Alive in our Marriage Retreat

Charis Ministries and the Jesuit Retreat House are hosting a retreat for couples in their first five years of marriage. This retreat, held at the Jesuit Retreat House on Sunday, October 9, runs from 9:00 am - 6:00 pm, and offers you and your spouse the opportunity to reflect on the meaning of your vocation of marriage and how you are being invited to live out your faith. Spend the day hearing inspiring talks from other young couples, talking with your spouse and other couples and praying together. The event ends with the Sunday liturgy. The cost is $70 per couple. You called us together to be your people and kept guiding us on our way. We ask you for this blessing - renew our hearts and refresh our faith, so that we may ever rejoice in your love. Hear our prayer and send forth your Spirit on us during this time of celebration so that we might become a Church that is reconciling and forgiving, faithful to your teachings, full of faith, hope and love.

We Are Companions On A Journey In the RCIA

May we be a Church that seeks justice, is alive to the needs of others and a church that lives out your call to proclaim the Good News so that all peoples may come to know you as their Lord and Savior.

Gesu Parish is beginning a new faith journey to welcome those who wish to learn more about our Catholic faith. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, more commonly known as RCIA, will meet on most Tuesday evenings through May of next year. We welcome those interested in learning more about the teachings and traditions of our Catholic faith, and those who wish to become members of our Catholic community. If you or someone you know is interested or would like to learn about being an RCIA sponsor, please email Marcia Leous at [email protected] or call the parish office. You may also submit information online at www.gesuchurch.wufoo.com/forms/zkr0miu1qo5mds.

Outreach 50+ Club & Gonzaga Luncheon

Service Spotlight: The Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center (DVCAC)

The Gesu 50+ Club and Gonzago Society are hosting a menu for the soul and body on Wednesday, September 21. The Sacrament of the Sick or Anointing will first be celebrated within the 12:00 pm Healing Mass. This will be the opportunity to pray for the sick of our parish. Following the Mass, a luncheon/deli tray, potato salad and tossed green salad will be served in McAuley. Reservations are required. Forms are located in the back of the church.

- 12 million women and men are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner each year. - 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner in a single year. - 900,000 children were confirmed to be victims of abuse or neglect annually. How much do you know about domestic violence? For some of us, this is a topic that hits too close to home. For others, we may not recognize it if it was unfolding in front of us. The DVCAC is one organization that works to empower, educate, and advocate for those impacted by this tragedy, and provide hope for the future. Gesu is connected to the DVCAC through their Latina Project, which works with victims of domestic abuse while taking into account the unique circumstances of being Latina. Gesu has also provided sponsorships for various DVCAC events throughout the year, and continues to look for new ways to get parishioners connected. The DVCAC provides hope, healing, and friendship through a variety of services, that include: art therapy, prevention programs, programs for teen-dating violence, a helpline, parenting classes, and community education, among many more. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age, and can be utilized in a variety of capacities such as helpline advocate, childcare assistant, justice system court advocate, and donation assistant. To learn more about volunteering with DVCAC or other volunteer opportunities at Gesu, please contact Outreach Coordinator, Ashley Markiewicz at (216) 932-0617 or email [email protected]. You can also visit www.DVCAC.org to learn more about this empowering organization. (If you or someone you know needs help, you can call their 24-hour hotline at 216-391-HELP.)

Listen carefully to their message and consider a donation. A single U.S. dollar has tremendous buying power in Honduras. Please help!
