The Gesu Honduras Summer Mission will be June 14-21. All interested parishioners are invited to an informational meeting on Wednesday, January 20 at 7:00 pm in McAuley Hall. Service Day Thank You!

Gesu Parish would like to extend a tremendous thank you to everyone who participated in Service Day. Whether you donated your time, prayers, gifts or any other form of support, your willingness to serve radiated throughout Cleveland and helped to impact thousands of lives. Service Day could not happen without all of you, and your continued support is greatly appreciated.

Gina’s Journey is an organization collecting hats and head square scarves for distribution to patients undergoing treatment at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center. All items collected will be dry-cleaned before distribution. Please consider helping out this cause. To donate, please email Gina Cortese at gina_cortese@ yahoo.com or visit www.ginasjourney.org.

World Day for Migrants & Refugees

Pope Francis has chosen the theme for the 2016 World Day for Migrants and Refugees: “Migrants and Refugees Challenge Us. The Response of the Gospel of Mercy.” We will come together to pray for all those who have come to the U.S. seeking a home and in many cases, seeking safety. The Diocese of Cleveland will be celebrating this day on January 24 with a special liturgy at 12:00 pm celebrated by Bishop Richard Lennon at St. Michael the Archangel Parish, 3114 Scranton Road. Following the liturgy, come to the hall for a reception where there will be refreshments, lively music and the opportunity to join in the dancing. There is no cost and everyone is invited and encouraged to join us in this prayer and celebration. If you have any questions, please call Sister Rita Mary at (216) 696-6525.

AIDS Taskforce Cookie Collection

Several years ago, the late Jim Price began a cookie drive to support the clients and workers of the AIDS Taskforce of Cleveland. We will continue that tradition, both in his memory, and as a part of our efforts to support the HIV/AIDS impacted community. We will be collecting any type of cookies (no nuts please) until January 31. Cookies can be dropped off at the Parish Office. Please call the Parish Office or email Ashley Markiewicz at [email protected] for more information. Thank you for your generosity!

Respect Life Committee

During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis calls out for a greater respect of the human person: “The first right of the human person is life. (Congregation of the Faith, Declaration on procured abortion 18 November 1974, n.11).” Statistics reveal over 59,000,000 lives lost through abortion since 1973’s Roe v. Wade ruling. This translates to a loss of the entire population of the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. And yet: “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent us his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sin.” 1 John 4:10 “His mercy endures forever.” Psalm 136:15 Upcoming Events January 19: Commemorative Prayer Service - 7:30 pm, Church. Rosary, prayers and music will recognize the dignity of human life. January 22: Mass for Life - 10:00 am, Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist January 22: Cleveland Right to Life Youth Rally - 12:00 pm, Perk Park

Inter-Parish Mission: Save the Date!

Mother’s Retreat

Gesu parish mothers are invited to participate in the annual Gesu Mother’s Retreat. Please save the date for February 5 - 6, 2016. This overnight retreat will be held at Bethany Retreat Center on the campus of Notre Dame Cathedral Latin High School in Chardon. More details and registration information will be announced soon. If you’d like to get involved with our planning committee, please email Carrie Morse at [email protected]. New members are welcome!

Please save the date for an inter-parish mission that will change your life. “Rediscover: Mission, Mercy and the Meaning of Life” will be held March 13-15 at Communion of Saints Parish and includes a simple soup supper each night. This inter-parish mission will be an inspiring yet practical experience of dynamic teaching and application of the genius of Catholicism to every aspect of your life. Keep watching the bulletin for all the details!

Joe Harrison Memorial Benefit

On Saturday, February 6, Heights Council 3087 will hold their fourth annual Joe Harrison Memorial Benefit Concert to support the St. Vincent dePaul Society at Gesu. This year’s performers will be Gesu alumni Chip McDonald, Gesu parishioner Beth Hyland, and Heights Council’s own Kevin Maher fronting Chain Gang, playing a great mix of blues-based rock and roll. Doors will open at the Gesu Family Center at 7:00 pm. Your $25 ticket will get you the show and complimentary food (pizza and subs) and light beverages. A cash bar with beer and wine will also be available. For more information, visit www.harrisonbenefit.org.

In the Jesuit Tradition

Peter Faber was the first man recruited by Ignatius of Loyola to be a Jesuit. Others had joined Ignatius, but had fallen away. Peter Faber was the first among the “First Fathers” who stayed. It might be revealing to learn about the first Jesuit saint canonized by the first Jesuit Pope. On December 17, 2013, about nine months after his election as pope, the Holy Father, Pope Francis, on his 77th birthday, issued a decree of “equivalent canonization,” naming Peter Faber a saint. Such a decree is used when there are not the requisite number of miraculous cures attributed to the saint, and such a canonization foregoes the usual Mass in Saint Peter’s Square.

50+ Club Mardi Gras Party

The Gesu 50+ Club is sponsoring a Mardi Gras Party at Ursuline Educational Center, 2600 Lander Road on Tuesday, February 9. Mass will be said at 5:00 pm, cocktails and social at 5:30 pm, and dinner will be served at 6:00 pm. Dinner includes your choice of shrimp & chicken gumbo, chicken etoufee or sausage jambalaya. The cost is $25 per person and entertainment will be provided by the St. Ignatius Jazz Band. Please return RSVP form to Parish Office by Tuesday, February 2. Checks should be made payable to Gesu 50+ Club. For questions, please call Micki Maniscalco at (440) 646-9516. All are welcome!
