Mayville Whether it’s Shopping or Dining, Hiking or Biking, Working or Living,
You should...
make it Mayville!
make it Mayville
welcome
On behalf of the Mayville Area Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Mayville, we invite you to explore everything Mayville has to offer. Whether you are a lifelong resident or a first time visitor, we hope that your experience is rich and plentiful.
Mayville is a city with a remarkable history that includes many innovations, including: the roots of John Deere, cheese packaged into wedges, the shotshell reloader, milk trucks, and the aircraft carrier net. That progressive tradition continues today with Mayville being the first city in Dodge County to allow sidewalk dining, hosting an array of unique shopping, and the area’s best restaurants.
The Audubon Inn is a boutique full service hotel on the National Register of Historic Places, built in 1896.
We hope you enjoy Mayville’s fascinating history, our energizing present, and return for the exciting future.
We offer: • 16 elegant guest rooms with high quality modern amenities • Destination restaurant NOLA North Grille, with indoor and seasonal outdoor seating • Full selection of spa services available at The Spa Room, including couples massage, or in-room massage therapy • Public and private showings of movies and sporting events in Le Petite Theater • Close proximity to internationally renowned Horicon Marsh, voted Wisconsin’s top natural wonder Open for dinner seven days a week and brunch on Sundays, NOLA North Grille brings an authentic New Orleans inspired dining experience to Wisconsin. You will taste the difference we hand cut and dry age our steaks in house, cure our own ham and bacon, grind our own burgers and sausages, and ship in fresh seafood several times each week. Our talented culinary team is passionate about food and eager to provide you with a memorable dining experience.
Mayville was first settled in 1845, by the families of Chester May and Alvin Foster who opened a saw mill. Shortly after this, the discovery of iron ore in the area led to a rapid growth of the settlement. Full of industrious, hard working, and friendly people, Mayville gained the reputation as Dodge County’s most progressive city. As the iron industry grew in Mayville, so did its downtown, hosting an array of businesses from cigar factories and breweries, to piano stores and creameries. Once the country moved from iron to steel, that same spirit helped Mayville transition into a manufacturing and farming community. Unlike many other iron cities across the country, Mayville and its downtown continued to prosper. Most of the original, historic buildings are still present today.

Open 1st & 3rd Sundays each month. May - October |1:30pm - 4:30pm In 1857-1858, after almost ten years of existence in a small frame schoolhouse, the people of Mayville decided to build a larger school to accommodate a growing population. A stone structure forty by sixty feet was erected, which was at that time one of the finest school buildings in the state. White limestone used for the school building came from local area stone quarries. Edward J. Foster, Ernst A. Muzzy, R.S. Chapman, and Miss Adra Reynolds were the first teachers in the new building.
In 1876, because of the growing population due to the success of the local iron smelting industry, a seventyfoot addition, nearly identical in design to the original building, was added on the south end. Local mason Friedrich Fischer, was the master builder. A new pillared portico and cupola gave it a grand statehouse appearance. The original school bell, donated by T. Sherin in 1857, was moved to the new tower and rang out for many years. This bell is now on display inside the building. In 1890, the school board decided to add steam heat to the school building. In 1937, as part of a WPA project, the area beneath the school was excavated for a full basement with two large rooms and indoor toilets.
For a period of time after the school closed in 1981, the Mayville Chamber of Commerce had their office located in the building. In March of 1982, the White Limestone School Restoration Corporation was formed. The Articles of Incorporation were signed by George Walk, president: Thomas Zuelsdorf, vice-president; Mary Ann Treichel, secretary, and Evaline Boeck, treasurer. In February of 2000, the name was officially changed to the “Mayville Limestone School Museum, Inc.” The Limestone School Building has been listed on the National Registry of Historic Places since 1976. In 2007, the museum proudly celebrated the 150th birthday of the building.
Museum Exhibits include: Iron Country; this exhibit features the iron mining and smelting history of Dodge County. Edgar G. Mueller Gallery; explore many of Edgar’s photos of the Mayville Area and the Horicon Marsh in this exhibit. Animal Room; this room houses a large collection of African and American wild game mounts. Mayville Talent Room; this exhibit honors the lives, talents and contributions of Mayville Citizens. Charles Henderson Collection of Indian Relics. This collection is comprised of hundreds of Native American arrowheads and hammer heads that were gathered from Dodge and surrounding counties. Rock River League Baseball Hall of Fame; An exhibit of many baseball trophies and other bits of baseball memorabilia from area teams and players in the Rock River League. Classrooms of the Past; explore three recreated classrooms of the past including exhibits of the late 1800’s and 1940-1950’s. Visit the museum website for more information: www.mlsm.org. The museum is located at the corner of Main and Buchanan Streets.
Mayville’s “White Limestone School” building was used as a public school for 121 years, from 1857-1964 and 19671981. From 1880-1898, the school served as both the grammar school and high school. The first high school principal was J. M. Turner. In 1883, after a three-year course of study, Emma Garling, Addie Williams, and Rudolph Sauerhering were the first graduates. In 1968, due to some deterioration, the cupola was removed from the building. In 1997, 29 years later, a replica of the original 35 foot tall cupola was restored to the building. This restoration project was financed by Ted Bachhuber and was dedicated in his memory. Ted passed away March 3, 1997. In 2007, following a fundraiser the museum replaced the plywood surrounding the cupola due to rotting wood. 14

carriage factory museum
The Carriage Factory consists of the main factory building on the corner of Bridge and German Streets plus two additions to the north of the building. The two additions were originally for a blacksmith shop and power plant. The museum displays several wagons, carriages and sleighs made in the factory; in addition to these, we have an old bank interior (Knowles), military displays, a mounted eagle that Harley Davidson photographed for some of their advertising, printing press equipment, a dentist’s office, and a lot of Mayville marked items from yesteryear. We also have many pictures and maps showing the early history of Mayville.
1 North German Street Mayville, WI 53050 Free Admission Open 2nd & 4th Sundays each month 1:30pm - 4:30pm The museum of the Mayville Historical Society occupies what once was the home and workplace of John Hollenstein and family. Hollenstein came to the Mayville area in 1873, where they worked a small farm.
Hollenstein started making wagons and carriages with blacksmith William Albrecht in a building on North Main Street. Hollenstein set up his own wagon and carriage business, erecting a factory east of his home. He operated his shop until 1908, and then sold it to his son, John Hollenstein Jr., who continued the business until 1941. Anton Jagow purchased the factory building in 1945. He made and repaired farm wagons, built wooden truck bodies, wooden folding chairs and other items. Algot Streed bought the building in 1953 and ran the tool and die operation there until 1967. Then James Gilboy purchased the facility but never occupied it. Ted and Grace Bachhuber donated funds to enable the Mayville Historical Society to buy the building.

Horicon marsh explorium
Guests will have a unique opportunity to travel through time as they explore some of the exciting new features on display at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center in Horicon, Wisconsin. Long before Horicon Marsh achieved international status as an important bird and wildlife area and a destination for outdoor recreation, glaciers carved a basin where a wetland would one day form. Today, guests of Horicon Marsh’s Explorium can get a glimpse of life at Horicon Marsh thousands of years before European settlement and witness how the current wetland came to be. The experience is narrated by a Clovis point arrowhead, that keeps visitors company throughout the journey as they view, listen to, touch, and even smell exhibits that document the changes to the marsh over time.
Bird Adaptation Game
Videos and interactive displays greet guests at every turn, encouraging audiences of any age to learn more about the history and ecology of Horicon Marsh. A wooly mammoth replica that children are free to touch and climb represents wildlife that roamed the land during the Ice Age and also served as an important food source for early Native Americans. Relics from the age of European settlement as well as modern hunting and trapping equipment illustrate the marsh’s popularity as a waterfowl hunting site. Games encourage visitors to learn about wildlife identification. Viewers can also gain a singularly thrilling perspective on the management and conservation activities currently occurring on the marsh before heading out to enjoy it for themselves. These exhibits are just a taste of the many educational themes the new Explorium will feature.
Wetland Diorama
Radke Memorial Take some time to read about Mr. Curley Radke, a local citizen who was instrumental in Horicon Marsh becoming the place that it is today.

The Open Door Coffeehouse is the home away from home for Mayville residents and those visiting. Its passion is to bring “local” back and to give back to the community. Its warm smells, friendly baristas, and welcoming environment hold a sophisticated-rustic feel, while holding a cup of delicious comfort in your hands. The comfort in your hands is Luna Coffee, a local roaster that is fair trade. The unique, one of a kind art work on the walls come from local artists. The books on the shelves, written by local authors. The savory foods are created by local restaurants. Enjoy a day in downtown Mayville, exploring the unique shops, eating at one of the many impressive restaurants, walking along the river and ending your evening with live music by local artists and an espresso at The Open Door.
