Preface

Smart Financing and Talent are the two biggest challenges facing growing life sciences companies when implementing their strategy. FlandersBio, the life sciences cluster organisation in Flanders, is therefore extremely pleased that the BCF Career Event, a successful formula which has certainly proven its worth in the Netherlands, is now also coming to Belgium. The future of the life sciences cluster in Belgium has a strong foundation in the excellent sciences and innovation we offer at the VIB (Flemish Institute for Biotechnology), but also in a lot of other research groups in our universities and hospitals. All these institutions educate young people with a profound scientific knowledge base. This science base is absolutely essential to form the R&D talent of the future for our public research institutes or for the R&D teams in our companies. We need good scientists to do the R&D of the future. But success of life sciences is more than just doing good R&D. Successful life sciences companies are capable of developing life sciences based solutions which are meaningful and can bring these to end-users: consumers, farmers or patients. Bringing these solutions ‘all the way’ to end-users is an expensive and tedious process that demands a strong diversity of skills and competences. To do this we need product developers, we need project managers, we need production experts trained in Good Manufacturing 4

Preface

Practice (GMP), Communication and Business development experts etc. Most of these skills and competences are rooted in a strong basic knowledge and understanding of life sciences. So we need life scientists who can do all these jobs. In other words, the future growth of the life sciences industry needs talent that both understands life sciences AND has the necessary ‘other’ competences along with the appropriate sense of urgency to get these solutions to the end-users. Even today, the voice of Dr. Paul Janssen, founder of Janssen Pharmaceutica, is resonating in our cluster: ‘The patients are waiting’. Consumers and patients are not only waiting, they are also more and more informed and demanding. In the future solutions based on life sciences will be ever increasingly a mix of products, information app’s and services to use the products more effectively. Pharmaceutical companies will not only develop drugs, but also offer services to prevent diseases, to diagnose them and to inform patients about their disease and how to cope with it. We will evolve into a healthcare system which is more personalized: the so called ‘precision medicine’. Also in the food industry we see a similar evolution towards precision nutrition. Precision medicine and precision nutrition are no longer just distant science fiction, they are with us now as we speak. They will determine the interactions our companies and health or

“The future of successful life sciences jobholders is going to be multi-disciplined, end-user centric, international and competence rich.” food service providers have with end users for many years to come. The fact that new players like Google, Apple, Microsoft and Samsung are joining this field makes it even more dynamic than before. Since finding and training smart talent is so crucial, FlandersBio has recently started an initiative to do an extensive competence needs prognosis for the next 10 years. FlandersBio will present this to the jobseekers and the companies that are present. We will also present an action plan to help jobseekers become more suited for the life sciences companies of the future and to help companies in their further talent search and training needs. The future of successful life sciences jobholders is going to be multi-disciplined, end-user centric, international and competence rich, but also strongly rooted in a life science knowledge base. Join us on this formidable journey. I can guarantee you: it is fun to be part of the life sciences cluster.

BioBusiness Summer School Many life scientists will make a switch to industry at some point in their career. Knowledge of business aspects such as product development, IPR, finance and business models are essential to succeed, yet in the academic arena in which scientists learn their scientific skills, these subjects are frequently ignored. The BioBusiness Summer School aims to fill this gap. The 5 day interactive programme introduces young scientists to the business world of Life Sciences and helps in their career orientation. During the programme participants learn the basic knowledge of biobusiness, gain insight in the world of Life Sciences companies, meet leading business people, increase their international network and have a great experience in the beautiful city of Amsterdam.

How to ace your job applications Who am I and which job best fits my wishes and interests? Which companies would I like to work for? It is important to make the right choices through thorough preparation.

Have you found the job that seems 100% right for you? Then the next step is to convince the recruiter through your CV and application letter, to invite you for a job interview. The paper round or getting selected via your letter, is the first correspondence you will have with an employer. Do not take this too lightly. Writing your application letter is all about giving the correct facts and arguments, which will convince the recruiter to take your letter from the pile. Put yourself in the recruiter’s shoes while drafting the letter. Competition for jobs can be tough, your application needs to stand out. How to prepare The recruiter wants to get an answer to the question why you are the suitable person for the company and the vacancy. Keep the following actions in mind before you start writing the letter. First, take advantage of the available information on the company website, in the annual report, in a recruitment brochure or any recent media articles. Secondly, try to gather information about that company’s competitors. Thirdly, arrange a meeting with a starter who recently started the job of your choice by contacting the recruiter or via your own network. This last option is of course not always possible, but it can give you more insight into what the company has to offer and why you are the suitable candidate.

10 How to ace your job applications

Application Letter When you start writing, make sure you focus on the vacancy text and see which competencies and tasks are required. Enquire about which other traits and ambitions the company favours and make sure these stand out in your letter. Basically, an application letter consists of three parts: 1. Consideration phase: introduction Start by describing the reason for your application, aimed position and refer to where you saw the vacancy or give your reasons for open application. 2. Interest phase: core In the core you need to write down your motivation for the position, the company and why you are a suitable candidate. Try to be as specific as possible and give concrete arguments showing you can handle the position and meet job requirements. In addition to your motivation, you can give detailed examples of your strengths. Include references to previous experience and past performances. Your letter can also be a useful way to ‘fill the gaps’ that may be present if anemployer was only reading your CV e.g. career changes or periods of unemployment. 3. Completing phase: closure Give a conclusion of your motivation and state emphatically your willingness to visit for an interview.

Customise the letter to the position and the company You can adapt your writing style and choice of words to suit the job and company you are applying for. Find the right balance between the culture of the company and professionalism. Delivery Currently most applications are sent via e-mail with the application letter and CV attached (both in PDF format) guided by a short and formal message. It is important to use the same e-mail address that you mention in your CV. Request confirmation that your application has been received and give a follow-up call if you did not receive one. What you need to know Keep in mind that the purpose of the letter is to be invited for a job interview. Write your letter directed to the job position. Motivate your interest for that particular career path or job. Use concrete examples of previous experiences showing that you are qualified for the job. Try to avoid abbreviations and choose a clear layout. The letter and your CV need to form a complete picture. Make it maximum

Guidelines for the perfect CV

1-1.5 page. Do not forget to reread your letter and check for typos and style. How to draft your CV The Curriculum Vitae (CV) is a short biography, which needs to contain all relevant information about you as an applicant. Together with your application, this is your personal introduction to the company and therefore very valuable, especially since this serves as the basis from which the first selection takes place. A recruiter takes on average 9 seconds to look at your CV. This is the amount of time you have to make a good impression and to get the entrance ticket to your job interview. Social media accounts It is valuable to make use of social media during your job search. Recruiters make use of it in their search for talent; especially LinkedIn can be a handy tool. A professional LinkedIn profile can be useful to include in your CV. Important conditions are to create a complete and up-to-date profile with information matching that on your CV or at least not conflicting with it. Only then is it a useful contribution to help give the recruiter a better picture of your personality. >>> See next page for an exemplary CV >>>

»» The CV is a numeration of facts, so stick to the facts! It is important that your CV is bright, clear and specific. »» Prevent using underlining, drawings, etc. This makes your CV look cluttered. »» Mentioning references in your CV is not necessary, unless it is specifically asked for. »» Shortly describe your work experience, traineeships and/or work placements (job titles alone do not say enough). »» Minor or irrelevant side jobs can be mentioned as ‘various part-time jobs when studying’. »» Make sure there are no gaps in your CV. It is better to clarify any gaps since this makes you look more honest than trying to hide a certain period. »» Use a consistent chronological order. Always start with the most recent. »» Limit your CV to two pages. Making it longer will only draw attention away from the most important information. »» Remember that all information in your CV can be mentioned during the job interview.

Further explanation of most important CV aspects Personal information What definitely needs to be included in this section is full name, address, place, phone number, e-mail and date of birth. Consider the following elements: sex, place of birth, nationality and marital status. Consider what has added value if mentioned regarding the vacancy, otherwise leave it out. Be aware of using a professional e-mail account with name and last name. You can also add a brief description of your personality, drive or competences. Recruiters can use this to see whether you are the type of person that would fit in the organisation. Be confident, but do not exaggerate too much. Education Always start with education instead of work experience if you only have a little work experience. Distinguish between secondary school, bachelor and/or master programmes. When you apply for a specific function, it is certainly worthwhile giving more information about the most relevant study programme including listing most relevant courses and thesis subject. Do not add all grades, but attach a transcript with grades if specifically asked for by the employer. Generally it is sufficient to give the graduation grade for a master’s and/ or bachelor’s degree. Place ‘not completed’ between parentheses if you did not complete a specific course. If relevant for the vacancy, specific courses, internships, publications and specialisations can be mentioned. Work Experience In this section don’t just mention your part and fulltime work experience, but also any work placements or seasonal work experience if relevant.

Mention the employer, place and sort of tasks and responsibilities. Put your most recent job first. Give a brief description of the function and use bullets to list the most important responsibilities. Focus on things you did that link to the tasks and competences mentioned in the vacancy. Only mention side jobs if really relevant. Extracurricular activities Additional activities may give a better idea of who you are as a person. Be critical and only name relevant activities or activities that define you as a person. In the margin you can also specify the duration and how many hours a week you committed to an extracurricular activity. Interests and additional skills These are all activities, which cannot be categorised under education, work experience or extracurricular activities and certainly include languages, computer skills, driving licence and hobbies. Also here you should be specific and only mention the relevant interests contributing to better insight of your personality and relevant for the function. References Finally, you can list your references, however, they are rarely used. It is therefore not necessary to specify in your CV the names of persons, including function or contact address. Only mentioning, “references upon request" is sufficient. If applicable, you can send such confidential information after the employer has specifically requested it. Tip: make sure you inform your references so they are prepared for a possible call. You can also attach written references and/or testimonials.

14 Further explanation of most important CV aspects

Acing the job interview You did it! The employer is interested in getting to know you and willing to investigate if there is a good match between you and the company. In most cases you will have an initial interview with a recruiter or HR staff. Remember that these people do this work day in day out, so prepare yourself well. Interview preparation Take a look again at the job requirements (knowledge, experience and competences). Then work out where there is a 100% overlap with your personal profile and also where it doesn’t match. During the interview you can bring up your strengths, but be honest about your weaknesses. Make sure you always end with one of your strengths. During the interview a behaviour-based interview technique will be used. This means seeking behavioural examples from the past. Write down examples and competences from the past as preparation. You can also practice the interview with one of your friends. STAR method To be able to assess your behaviour well, the interviewer always wants to see it in perspective. One possibility is to use the STAR method. STAR stands for Situation – Task – Action – Result. What was the situation? What were the circumstances? What opportunities were there? What did you do (=behaviour)? What was the effect of your behaviour? You have already written down as many examples as you could think of during the preparation phase so this should go well. Don’t be surprised if there are questions you are not prepared for. Don’t freeze, just try and see if you can think of another example or that you can use an example you prepared in another way. Be a nice conversationalist Try to be a good conversationalist. Realise that the interview needs to be a dialogue. The interviewer needs to get a good impression

of you as a person, but also should feel comfortable in the conversation. Look critically at your own style and way of communicating. Are you making sure your answers match his or her expectations? Preparation is the key to success. Closing Take care of a good end of the conversation and that you are award of the next steps in the selection procedure. Do not only ask for the steps, but also try to get to know the timelines. Final assessment and selection If you are invited to a selection day you have already come far in the process. The company is prepared to invest time and money in you, since assessments cost a lot of money. During a selection day you can expect: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Tests Business cases More interviews Participation in an assessment centre

Some organisations also ask you to do assessment tests online in your own time. Tests Many companies use tests to measure your analytical skills. It is recommended to practice such tests to get an idea of the questioning and time you need to finish the test. You can find many examples of the standard tests (IQ, EQ and team) via a quick google search, but also assessment books can help you with your preparation. Use the search terms: ‘IQ test’, ‘numerical test’ or ‘ logical test’.

Acing the job interview 15

Business cases A business case is often used to assess your problem solving skills. They look at the way you get to your solution, how you collaborate with others (other candidates or the client) and what your interaction-skills are like. But also basic skills such as mental arithmetic can be tested. Each assessment is different. It may be the case that you receive information at home to prepare. During the session you need to solve a strategic, technical or operational problem as well as possible.

Assessment Centres At an assessment centre, you get the full opportunity to show your correct behaviour in person in relation to a specific function. The better centres will send you preparation material beforehand. Think of exercises as:

Interviews In this phase of the selection process, another interview will follow or a combination of an assessment and an interview. The best general preparation is to collect examples of several competences. An example of a set competences is:

During the assessment you will be assessed by ‘assessors’. These assessors are educated to observe and score your behaviour within a competency profile. Usually multiple competences are tested simultaneously during one part of the assessment. Make sure you keep a broader focus than only the exercise at hand, and also take account of those directly involved and the environment.

Customer Adjustability Customer orientation Adjustability orientation Pro-active Decision learning Decision making making Pro-active learning Developing Communication professional Communication Developing professiona relations relations Mediating conflict Hiring and promoting Hiring and promoting ValuingMediating diversity conflict Managing stress Managing stressteam Valuing diversity Developing a winning

Developing a winning tea

Take the following steps to prepare: »» retrieve competency details (name, definition and behavioural examples (STAR method)) »» write down one or more complete behaviour examples for each competence 16 Acing the job interview

»» Conversations »» Presentations »» Problem solving »» Mediating conflicts »» Role plays

Develop your own file with prepared competences. You can’t start too early when it comes to preparing them. As more competences and examples are added, your file will become more and more valuable over time. This will make you a serious and convincing candidate for any future job applications.

What do you really want in your career? It can be quite a journey to find out what job perfectly fits you and your career. We talked to Geraldine Sinnema, professional career coach and trainer. She supports higher-educated people in Life Sciences in finding an inspiring job and in finding inspiration and results in their current job. She provides individual counselling , workshops and training. Her company ‘Een wereld van verschil’ (A world of difference) is located in Wageningen, where Geraldine studied at Wageningen University. The right job or study Geraldine: “Starting point of our career coaching is to discover your talent. Deep down we know who we are, what our talents are and what drives us. But, often we change our path and start doing different things due to circumstances or expectations of the people around us.” Doing the right job or study gives you energy. You need to like the themes you are working on. However, it is unrealistic to expect your first job to be everything you dreamed of... But, if your job or study really does not fit, it is worthwhile to change. Geraldine suggests the following short exercise to understand which tasks of your current job or study fit you most: track your tasks for one week and write down which ones cost energy and which ones give energy. Try to find the common thread in what you like to do. This may be a task or project that takes a lot of effort and time, but still gives energy or fulfilment. Start to try new things When you want to move on from your

current job or study there are several options. “Carefully try new things next to your current tasks. E.g. when you are a student, follow a course or do research in a more inspiring direction. If you have a rather technical study, but want to be more people-focused. Go and try it first. For instance in volunteer work. In work situation, job crafting can be a good solution. This means switching tasks and responsibilities within your job to make it fit. Big switches are not always necessary; many times a small change can already make the difference. In some cases it can be helpful to try additional activities in your leisure time. Some clients succeeded in creating a job out of this. When you get stuck in analysing what you want and which new things you should try, it is good to talk to someone. In work situation with HR or during your study with the dean or study coordinator. For more personal coaching, get in contact with a professional career coach.” Your personal mission You can write down your personal mission to guide yourself into the right direction by following these steps. 1. Describe the core of your expertise. Who are you as a professional? Describe the professional activities you like to do. 2. Choose a theme, problem, target group or vision you want to contribute to. 3. Which competences will you bring? Mention your 2 or 3 main competences. 4. Give an example of an achievement that you obtain by following the first three steps.

Other questions that can help you discover what kind of study or job suit you are: 1. What do I want to develop, achieve or contribute to the world? 2. What do I want to do, see, experience? 3. What fascinates me as well as concerns me? 4. What do I want to learn; what do I want to excel at? 5. What do I want to pass on to others; what do I want to mean to others? 6. What do I most want to contribute to society?

Combine the answers into one sentence and this will give you your direction for your future career! You can use this in networking conversations and in your summary on LinkedIn. You may wonder why it is so difficult to answer the question ‘what do I want’? Eva de Waard developed a model about the ‘inner and outer lifeline’ (see image).1 The outer lifeline are your diplomas, education and jobs. The inner lifeline is your own development and motivations. These two can sometimes run apart. Your environment influences your outer lifeline. This may be fine, but it will not make you fully satisfied. Most people are not aware of their inner lifeline. Job seeking via LinkedIn The way we search and find job vacancies has changed considerably due to the influence of social media. A major force is LinkedIn. Job application and LinkedIn can no longer be separated. Organisations are also continuing to use this medium more when it comes to recruiting new staff. Not just for online job posting, but also for targeting new employees through the different LinkedIn search features. Networking via LinkedIn The purpose of LinkedIn is to connect professionals all over the world and create the perfect networking environment. By inviting people to connect, you can see at a glance who your connections are (first degree network), who the connections of your connections are (second degree network) and who the connections of your connections are (third degree network). Therefore, your network grows exponentially with every connection you make. Who do you invite? The answer to this question is rather simple: everyone that you think might be able to help you! This might be fellow students, colleagues, family, current friends, old friends, etc. Even when someone works in a different industry or perhaps doesn’t have the same ambitions as you have, that person may be of help now or in the future. Invite people immediately after contact or collaboration to connect and if suitable, ask them for a recommendation. Keeping emails via LinkedIn is always more business-like than other social media; a friendly, decent tone makes a more professional impression. Do not forget to thank them after you have received their recommendation and consider writing one for them in return. If you want to add

someone you do not know in person, please indicate why you have approached them to increase the chance of getting your invitation accepted. Job searching Start your job search on LinkedIn by clicking ‘Jobs’ at the top of your homepage and type a job title, keyword or company name in the search box. Advanced search and filters enable you to refine your search criteria. Also putting search terms in quotes and using OR or AND between words can help refine your search. Click on the job titles to view details and look for matching jobs. It is important to be ready when the opportunity comes knocking. Don’t leave your job search just because you have left your desk. 30% of job applications are submitted within the first three days a job is posted, if you also apply in this period, you are 13% more likely to land the position. Also for students, a LinkedIn profile can be very useful. It can be more difficult to fill your profile, but in the end it gives you the possibility to get in touch with your first employer at an early stage. Get in contact with the company If you would like to get in contact with a company because you are interested in a job, you can search via LinkedIn for people in your network who are already an employee of this company. Once you discover that you have a connection with an employee it is a lot easier to get in touch. Your connection could perhaps put in a good word for you with HR. At this point, it is important that your profile is up-to-date. You are not the only one looking on LinkedIn and once the HR-manager has heard your name, they will undoubtedly look up your profile. When you register on LinkedIn, you are guided through all the steps to make

10 tips to get maximum benefit from LinkedIn during job application

your profile as complete as possible. Do not publish information which is not true. Everyone can see it and it is easy to check the authenticity of the information. Also use LinkedIn when you are invited for a job interview to check your interlocutor, this can help you with the preparation. Switching jobs via LinkedIn LinkedIn is widely used by people looking for another job. New jobs appear regularly online. Usually you will be notified by email. Of course you can also receive help from people in your own network to stay informed about interesting functions. Asking around always helps! Another way is to ‘follow’ interesting companies and keep updated about any vacancies. Maybe one of your connections can introduce you to the company? Or you can help somebody else because you know people in a particular organisation. This is how LinkedIn helps people in their job search. Be active! Being active on LinkedIn is smart. Become a member of discussion groups and participate in topics in your field of knowledge and/ or in which you are interested. In such groups you are able to get in touch with like-minded people and perhaps also your future employer. Benefits of LinkedIn are that you are able to join discussions that interest you and follow people from the group to stay up to date and react quickly once new vacancies come available. Employers can post a job in the groups as well. This happens a lot since this is a free way of communicating their vacancy. These all combine to increase your chances of seeing interesting vacancies.

1. It may seem logical, but reality proves the contrary. Upload a professional, recent and clear picture of yourself. Statistics prove that profiles with a picture have 30% more views. 2. Fill in the field next to your picture, the ‘professional headline’. It is the first thing that visitors will see of your profile. Choose keywords rather than complete sentences to increase your findability, also in Google. 3. The status update: What are you working on? This will appear to your ‘first network’. See it as your own personal newsletter and make sure you are regularly in the picture to show your network what you are working on. Be specific. 4. Describe in the summary in a short and powerful way who you are, what you have to offer and why people need to hire you. This is the spot to put forward your elevator pitch. Again think and choose the right keywords. 5. LinkedIn is more than just a CV. Be as complete and comprehensive as possible in your descriptions of ‘Past experiences’ and ‘Education’ but without too many unimportant details. Work in logical order and write result-based with the right job titles. Name at least 20 competences, otherwise you are being too modest. 6. Make sure your profile is always up to date. It is not a CV, which you can adapt when you need it. 7. Tick the option ‘Career opportunities’ at the bottom of your profile, so recruiters can find you more quickly. 8. Recommendations ensure that you will appear higher in the search results. Do not hesitate to ask your (former) manager(s) for a recommendation. Inform them about the achievements and actions you want to highlight. 9. Become a member of ‘groups’. There is a maximum, but make sure that you are at least member of 10-15 groups and profile yourself as an active professional within your discipline. 10. Let your network do the work, invite people to connect, also those with a different expertise and do not limit yourself to your trusted circle of contacts.

Working to close the TB diagnostics and treatment gap

Tuberculosis and TB-MDR detection and treatment program in Lima, Peru. How can development practitioners collaborate to modernize and scale up TB diagnosis and care? Photo by: Pan American Health Organisation / CC BY-ND In its latest Global Tuberculosis Report, the World Health Organisation estimates that effective diagnosis and treatment have saved 43 million lives between 2000 and 2014. That’s nearly a 50 percent drop in mortality. These powerful statistics not only remind us that TB is both preventable and curable, but they show just how much transformation we can bring about when we pair global ambition with action. So how can it be that TB remains one of the world’s biggest health threats, ranking as the number one cause of death from infectious disease worldwide? First, efforts to eliminate TB are being thwarted by the alarming spread of multidrug-resistant TB - now considered a global public health crisis. Secondly - and quite cruelly - it is the poorest areas of the world that typically bear

the brunt of the burden. Although new MDR-TB drug treatment options have brought hope for patients, many live in resource-scarce and remote areas where it is difficult to access adequate diagnostic tools. Not only does this delay or prevent treatment of very sick people, but these patients continue to fuel the ongoing spread of infection at the rate of up to 10 people per year. Given the availability of treatment options, it is unacceptable that only one in four cases of MDR-TB is detected and only one in two successfully treated. This is why we need to see a deep commitment to tackle critical global health challenges. For example, Janssen - a pharmaceutical company of Johnson & Johnson - and FIND recently announced a formal partnership to step up the fight against TB, and especially MDR-TB.

24 Working to close the TB diagnostics and treatment gap

A key focus will be to identify and work with partners to accelerate the development of highly portable and affordable point-of-care molecular diagnostic tools for TB and drug resistance that can generate results within hours. Molecular tests that detect resistance in hours have now been developed and used successfully even in low-resource settings. Their adoption has already helped drive an increase in the number of TB patients being tested for drug resistance but still, only 12 percent of new TB cases were tested for resistance in 2014. New diagnostics are indeed only a part of the solution. Effective implementation along with efficient referral systems demand innovative solutions and multistakeholder collaboration. For example, training is needed to ensure proficiency in conducting tests, evaluating results and monitoring treatment for patients with MDR-TB. All health care providers and laboratories in the public-private mix must be linked to ensure national guidelines are followed and patients diagnosed with TB or MDR-TB are notified to the National TB Program and receive the right care. These are major challenges and certainly within our partnership we will work with NTPs and other partners to explore strategies for implementing diagnostic solutions and for quickly linking patients to the right care and treatment. 5 ways global health practitioners can help to have an impact: »» Modernize and scale up laboratory capacity with prompt access to rapid diagnostics that can detect MDR-TB »» Implement training and quality control throughout the diagnostic process »» Strengthen links between health care

providers in the public-private mix »» Ensure national guidelines are followed and implement referral systems to appropriate treatment and care »» Collaborate and innovate There are models of success that we can look to. South Africa has been particularly effective at rolling out the Xpert MTB/RIF diagnostic test and speeding up links to treatment. In one township on the fringes of Cape Town, for example, over a period of six years a combination of quicker testing and decentralization of MDR-TB care has led to the time from diagnosis to treatment for drug resistant TB dropping from 73 days to just seven. It is essential that global health initiatives and practitioners - those with expertise in diagnosis and treatment - collaborate and deliver a truly sustainable and scalable impact among underserved populations battling TB and MDR-TB. We fully embrace the post-2015 TB agenda, which has a new ambition to reduce TB deaths by 95 percent by 2035 and cut new cases by 90 percent. To achieve these ambitious goals it is imperative that global health and development practitioners collaborate to modernize and scale up TB diagnosis and care, to deliver a continuum of access from prevention to cure. Unlocking the power of networking By Ratna Lim

Many of us are not born as natural networkers. The term ‘networking’ alone can be an immediate turn-off, and can be dismissed as a waste of time. But why is networking so difficult for many? Is it really a crucial skill to have to be successful in our career? One of the challenges for many of us, scientists, who usually have very good analytical skills, is that we are often introverted and have a lone-ranger work mentality. After all, we could perform all of our experiments on our own and obtain all of the data we need by ourselves, don’t we? We are going to do it alone, work hard, and succeed, right? However the rule of the game changes once we leave (grad) school and enter the professional life. In school, harnessing the abilities and resources of other people is called cheating. In life, it’s called ‘using your network.’ People who do this in school are considered cheaters. In life, they are called ‘connected ‘.

So, how do we build relationships? Certainly, you already know it. But let us discuss the two often overlooked points, based loosely on the core ideas of Gale Porter from her book, Your Network is Your Net Worth.

It can be difficult for many of us to get used to the changed rules. Not to mention the strong negative connotations networking has for some people. Some call it ‘schmoozing’ or to ‘kiss up’. Nobody wants to be that manipulative and insincere person.

The next step is to know your passion and purpose, your raison d'être. Any successful organisations have a well-defined raison d'être, which is usually outlined in their vision and mission statement. You could too. A well-defined raison d'être will help you in presenting yourself to the outside world in an authentic way, as well as guide your steps and actions.

It is interesting to note that the term networking has been understood as a business tool, a set of tasks, something you are supposed to be doing to succeed. At the same time, it would probably have been less intimidating if it was simply called ‘making friends’. By thinking of networking as a way of building relationships, it does not need to be an insincere or ‘extroverted’ activity as people think. 28 Unlocking the power of networking

1. Know yourself Knowing yourself is the first step to connecting with others. Know yourself well enough that you are aware of your weaknesses or barriers that prevent you from connecting, such as negative thinking, low self-esteem, or fear of public speaking. By knowing this you will be better prepared to act upon it.

Once you have identified the barriers and defined your raison d'être, start building new relationships with people who share (some of the) same values and interests as you. It will feel more natural as you will be more genuinely interested in the topics of discussion as well as the person you talk

Ratna Lim

“Networking is often misunderstood as a transactional relationship, as if it is a sales activity. ” to. This can be the basis for advancing your networking skills, as well as a foundation of a strong network based on common interests. 2. Providing values (‘Give Give Get’) Networking is often misunderstood as a transactional relationship, as if it is a sales activity. But nothing could be further than the truth: the key to uncovering the value of connections lies in helping others when you don’t expect anything in return – therefore the phrase ‘give give get’ coined by Ms. Porter, namely to put more energy in giving instead of receiving. You can practice `give give get’ simply by asking your connections, “How can I help?”. It can be a simple gesture, such as introducing your new connection to your existing network, or a more challenging one, such as sharing your expert opinion on a certain subject that may help your new connection to solve a problem. Volunteering at an organisation or event will also help you

get to know people in the field, while at the same time show them what you are capable of. Afterwards, don’t forget to maintain your new relationships. You can do so by, for instance, sending a simple birthday greeting or sharing an article that you think might interest a certain person. To conclude, networking is a powerful tool for success that requires you to be your (1) authentic and (2) generous self. Anybody can unlock the power of networking and enjoy its benefits, you included. Bear in mind that you may not enjoy the benefit of networking right away, as relationship-building takes time. Do start now, as the earlier you start, the sooner you will reap its benefits.

Unleash your PhD power!

Career development as a basis for professional success By Chiat Cheong

Make the most of your PhD power, whatever career path you choose! BCF Career Event is an excellent opportunity to meet potential employers. But maybe as a PhD with a background in academia, you feel that there is gap between you – the PhD – and the type of candidate that is being looked for. There is no reason to worry, but good preparation is essential to make your next career step a success. Here are some pointers to give you a jumpstart. If I were to ask you to state the significance of having a PhD in your career, what would you say? If you find this difficult to answer, then I challenge you to think this through. Why? Because if you want employers – especially those outside academic research – to value your PhD, you have to be able to tell them what extra abilities come alongside your PhD. Within the academic environment, a PhD doesn’t seem to be a big deal: ‘Everyone’ is (about to be) a PhD. It surely takes hard work, but a PhD is ‘just’ a starting point for research, isn’t it? What defines your success? Your academic CV states your scientific field of expertise, the techniques you master and your publication record. Although criteria are continually evolving, traditionally success in academia is measured in this way. The majority of PhDs will however continue their career outside academia. Many a PhD struggles with the transition. How can you sell 30 Unleash your PhD power!

yourself if everything you have worked for, does not seem to matter anymore?! To reassure you, moving out of academia may feel like leaving everything behind to leap into the unknown, but it certainly is not. Your PhD has equipped you with many skills that retain their value even when you change your work environment. These so-called transferable skills are the true power of your PhD. So if you are not aware of them yet, you’d better start defining your skill set now. Examples of valuable transferable skills shared by PhDs »» Intellectual abilities/strong analytical skills »» Info-savvy/self-sufficiency »» Ability to work both independently and in teams »» High standards »» Perseverance/resilience to setbacks »» Project management »» Communication skills If you have only worked in the academic environment thus far, you may have the impression that a skill set like this is not that exceptional. Also, people without a PhD may have these skills too. But please note that an average person won’t (pssst… there are many of them outside academia!). Your PhD title is actually rock solid evidence for your valuable skill set!

PhDs have a lot to offer, but often nonacademic employers are not fully aware of this. Some may still have a stereotype in mind: intelligent, theoretical with narrow focus on one particular specialism. Encouragements in academia may have channelled your development in this direction, but you certainly have much more to offer. The challenge is to communicate your skills in a way non-academic employers understand and… value! OK, preparing for the next step of your career is important, but where do you start? One approach is trying to figure out where you fit in. Many then find themselves lost in the many options that never seem to be a match. Another issue is that a job that matches your abilities may not necessarily be the job that gives you fulfilment in your profession. Personally I believe the question you need to ask yourself should be: ‘What job suits me?’ Find out what you ideally would like to do, in what kind of setting, what kind of conditions are important to you, etc. Take yourself as a starting point and plot your profile. This approach not only allows you to evaluate opportunities, knowing what you want also enables you to land a job through networking.

Chiat Cheong Event to learn what they are looking for. Listen carefully and learn the terminology to describe the skills you already have. Ask questions and figure out what you like and dislike and use this to draft your preferred profile. Good science remains key to succeed as a PhD student. Meanwhile work out how your PhD abilities can be applied in favour of your employability. Your career development is your personal responsibility; a fulfilling career will be your personal gain. If you don’t know how to structure your career development, then find support. Career services, coaching and courses are available at your university or at dedicated organisations. Make the most of your PhD power, whatever career path you choose!

Empowering your job search with Cheeky Scientist and BioBusiness Summer School By Matthew Heberling

As an accountant-turned biochemist, I thought that my business background with top accounting firms would provide an easy ticket to industry positions after obtaining a biochemistry PhD. This has not been the case. While my unique career path has aroused respectable attention by companies and recruiters, by all means a yellow brick road has not been paved for easy access to target jobs. The recent economic downturn is a major culprit, making it even more difficult for academic researchers to spread their wings beyond the confines of the ivory tower. Since joining the Cheeky Scientist Association (CSA), I have formulated a streamlined job search strategy powered by a fantastic network that has provided unimaginable opportunities and the serendipitous transition from feeling like a job seeker to a job chooser. After applying CSA principles at key networking events like the BioBusiness Summer School (BBSS), phenomenal results followed. CSA job search guidelines Learning how to extract key transferable skills from academic research experiences which will drive value in industry is usually the biggest challenge faced by transitioning academics. The stereotypical modesty of academic researchers coupled with a general lack of business acumen inflate this challenge unnecessarily. Thankfully, insightful courses like the BBSS, provide a bridge to the business-end of the life sciences industry for academic researchers. Having witnessed countless top-notch scientists disgraced by no call-backs

from online postings of jobs that seemed a perfect fit, I can now realize as a CSA member what the likely weak points of their application may have been. The staggeringly consistent shortcoming of most of the applications is the lack of networking beforehand. Overall, these are the key aspects that CSA addresses through training its worldwide members: Applying online is ineffective and inhibits an effective job search strategy There is only an 8% chance of success without employee referrals. Reference-style publication lists are a waste of valuable space on a résumé The key is to extract from publications the relevant skills for the target position and communicate these in a way that an employer will value. Career profile headings are becoming an impactful component in competitive résumés. Cover letters are important: A chance to stand out One academic researcher applied for 300 positions with NO covering letters in a country where there are easily 200+ applicants per position. The result: no call-backs. This case alone may highlight the importance of covering letters, assuming an otherwise solid application. Becoming an effective networker may even bypass the need for a covering letter. Networking is the key to success Like it or not, 70% of jobs are gained through referrals. Why? Think about it: If you had a

choice to sift through heaps of applications or simply go to fellow co-workers for trusted referrals for a few potential candidates, which route would you choose? The key aspect in networking is offering value without the expectation of returned favours. When networking is done right on a two-way path, it becomes a gift that keeps on giving in unimaginable ways other than just gaining referrals. A LinkedIn profile is your key networking tool For those who don’t believe in a LinkedIn profile, a rude awakening awaits; especially if networking is not already a component in your strategy. It was reported that 77% of recruiters research candidates online. So, why not control how your online presence is perceived by creating an online professional profile? For more information about the CSA, see: www.cheekyscientist.com

My BBSS experience and its pivotal role in creating a valuable network After immense self-reflection and developing a CSA transition plan into either medical writing or management consulting roles, I attended the BBSS 2015 course to revive my latent business mind in the realm of the life sciences industry. The programme taught not only key, fundamental business principles and models, but real world successes and failures were shared by CEOs of leading pharma and biotech companies that were truly inspiring and engaging. Aside from this and very useful teamwork activities including a case study, one key aspect stands out the most for me - networking. Overall, I cannot stress enough how important the networking component from the BBSS course has empowered my job search strategy. More importantly, I gained true friendships.

Pursuing a career in BioBusiness By Tim Knotnerus

After graduating from a combined commercial/scientific Master (Science and Innovation Management) and a research Master (Drug Innovation), I set out to find the right job. Preferably a combined role with both a science and commercial angle. This should be easy, I thought, so I started with the BCF Career Event and spoke with many companies and recruiters. Unfortunately, all they could tell me was that commercial roles were very rare, not for starters, often required a PhD and the only option was to become a rayon manager (artsenbezoeker) for pharma companies. I refused to accept this, so I tried to gain a better understanding of the life sciences industry and to find out about potential business positions myself. I learned about the struggle of many entrepreneurs to fund their companies and the important role of venture capital. So that is where I started my job search and I was lucky to talk myself into an analyst position at one of the large VC firms (Aescap Venture). They dared to give me a chance, even though I was underqualified for the job. Evaluating the many smart businesses in Europe and working with the investment team to select the most exciting ones was really great. Even more so I enjoyed working with the management teams of our portfolio companies to either (re)finance their companies, launch a new strategy or close a collaboration deal.

After four years I started to become more interested in working at a biotech company and started looking for a business development position. Again, I thought this would be easy, given my network and VC exposure, but the contrary was true. It took me a while to find out what roles were possible and where to find them. In the end I managed to receive a couple of job offers and I chose for a combined Business Development and Project Management position at AM-Pharma, a biotech company that develops treatments for patients with acute kidney injury, inflammatory bowel disease and hypophosphatasia. AM-Pharma combined a unique set of features including a great management team, seasoned board and investors, exciting product pipeline with interesting market opportunities and a good IP position. But above all, I had a great “click” with the CEO who was willing to create the new position and mentor me throughout the years. Four years later, I am now part of the management team, co-lead the option to acquisition deal with Pfizer of up to $600M and hold responsibility for business development and alliance management. It is only now, after many years that I am starting to understand the industry with its many hidden opportunities and exciting businesses. There are plenty of commercial roles both at biotech and pharma companies as well as at service suppliers, consultancy

And yet, it is very difficult to find the right job, especially for starters. Simply because you don’t know the industry yet and many companies recruit from their own personal network. Commercial roles are hardly ever found at recruitment firms which generally recruit for clinical, scientist, or quality positions. Therefore, in 2016, Haifen Hu (Director of Hyphen Projects) and I have started Primer BioBusiness, a recruitment company that fully focuses on commercial roles in the Life sciences. We see opportunities in business development, venture capital and market research, but also in market access, sales and marketing and life sciences consultancy. We aim to find the most ambitious candidates and help them understand what they are really looking for and where to find it. We make the match with companies and help prepare for the exciting path ahead. This is the kind of help that I would have really appreciated in my earlier searches. We hope you will appreciate it too.

Working in Belgium: Culture Shock or Not?

Koen Dorlandt, born and raised in the Netherlands, currently works in Belgium as PepsiCo´s Manager for Juice Supply in Europe. After spending almost four years in Belgium, Koen has learned to adapt to cultural and linguistic differences between Belgium and the Netherlands. In this interview Koen would like to share his experiences with others who are considering moving to Belgium or another foreign country for a job opportunity. Why Belgium? The reason I'm in Belgium is purely driven by opportunities, as there was a good opportunity for a job with PepsiCo in Zeebrugge. Of course we considered what it all meant, moving to Belgium. We spent some time looking around, seeing what kind of houses were available, what kind of people were living in the area and what the job was really like. But I am very happy that I came here because my family and I are enjoying ourselves. What are the main differences? I think one of the differences between Belgium and the Netherlands is that Belgians are generally very friendly in public; if you encounter them in the street they have a chat with you. People are very open to talking with each other while you still see in the Netherlands that people tend to be more reserved. But on the other hand, the Belgians will be less likely to invite each other to visit their home for a coffee, meal, or to barbecue as neighbours, whilst in the Netherlands this is

38 Working in Belgium: Culture Shock or Not?

how most people get together. People will go somewhere to eat rather than eating in their own homes. At least, that is the impression we have after almost four years and it is certainly different than in the Netherlands. In Belgium, people are generally calmer and less rushed and I believe this is because in Belgium not everything is automated down to the last dot. In the Netherlands we are so accustomed to everything going quickly and efficiently and if there is ever a time when we have to wait people tend to get agitated. Life is quieter and calmer in Belgium and people enjoy life more because of this. Any differences within Belgium? It's easier to work in the Flemish part of Belgium because they speak Dutch, meaning there is no language barrier and everyone understands each other. Wallonia is obviously different because they speak French there and are less likely to speak Dutch. This sometimes creates competition between Belgians and the Dutch, and people can make jokes about these differences. That can also create

Koen Dorlandt

a stereotype, as you quickly become 'the Dutchy’ arriving in Belgium and you have to keep in mind that people have a certain image in their heads of this stereotype. What is it like in the office? In Belgium, some companies are based on hierarchy, where the boss is superior and where executives are not used to being talked back to or contradicted. In the Netherlands we are very used to having everyone vent their opinion on anything in the open, and this is also accepted by our superiors. It is also possible to speak to your boss informally, or make a note that his tie is crooked, and we can make jokes about this. In Belgium you can certainly see the clear hierarchy and people also behave differently. Certainly as a ‘Dutchy’ you have to keep in mind that you cannot state your opinion whenever you like, but that you have to deal with this in a more sensitive manner.

Coming to Belgium: Official information and services of the Belgian government - www.belgium.be Coming2Belgium – www.coming2belgium.be. Working abroad and staying in touch: Vlamingen in de wereld – www.viw.be Union des Belges francophones à l'étranger www.ufbe.be

In shock or not? Happily, I am not experiencing a culture shock. I like living and working here. You just have to adapt a bit. My tips for working abroad: 1. Be properly informed and guided by a local if you go abroad, and take account of differences, in for example tax and pensions. 2. Be aware of differences in cultural characteristics and respect these. 3. Find a place to live that is nearby your work, to avoid the (Belgian) traffic. Working in Belgium: Culture Shock or Not? 39

The power of self-realisation in your career transition By Jackie Johnson

I had plans for getting a medical degree since before I can remember. Right around the time they came out with Dr. Barbie, I presume. To distinguish myself from the other 60,000 students at the Ohio State University, which is one of the largest schools in the country, I pursued an honours diploma in biology and started working in a genetics lab. Academic bench science, or academia, stole my aspirations of becoming a medical doctor (you know . . . , the real kind). I loved doing experiments that no one else had done before. I could immerse myself into a super specific topic that no one else had ever studied. In the beginning there were many things I loved about academia. These were my people, after all. The friendships were great. We all had enthusiasm and tunnel vision for our exact field of study. We chose to abandon all other interests to pursue this knowledge. What I didn’t realise in the beginning is that academics are fiercely competitive for grant money. They have to be. I saw many prestigious scientists lash out in anger and mistreat each other—it was expected in most labs. Hoping that this was a result of the economic crisis in the USA, I moved to Amsterdam for my postdoc at the Netherlands Cancer Centre. The National Institute of Health estimates there are somewhere between 37,000 and 68,000 postdocs in the US alone. The conditions in my new lab were fantastic. There seemed to be plenty of money for research, the quality of life was outstanding, and the people were friendly. Despite this

renewed surge in positives, and far fewer negatives than before, I still realised that I never felt right. Although I loved my new life as an expat in Amsterdam, I didn’t feel like this was the career for me. Although I was learning about my new projects early into my postdoc, and the scientific community was proliferating like never before, I didn’t feel like I was growing. I knew that this path would not lead to my happiness. I didn’t get those warm fuzzy feelings about my experiments anymore. Actually, I resented having to do them altogether. I didn’t want to be one of those many energetic souls who were lost in the dark chambers of the ivory tower. The problem was that I didn’t have a clue where to start. To rebuild my shattered self-esteem, I tried to reconnect with things that I enjoyed. I started a blog, became an active freelance science and medical writer, and pursue medical writing courses, conferences, and certifications. Seeing progress made me feel great. I knew that I needed help to understand how the world worked outside of academia, so I enrolled in the BioBusiness Summer School and I joined the Cheeky Scientist Association. I learned how to craft an industry resume that reflected not just my accomplishments, but who I was, personally. Funny, I thought no one cared that I loved connecting with other people and communicating about science to the public. It turns out that makes me unique, and this skill is highly coveted in industry.

40 The power of self-realisation in your career transition

“I am still a scientist…, but I am so much more.” With a variety of clients asking for my help, including big pharma, biotech start-ups, academic journals, venture capitalists, and more, I started a medical consulting company, JLJ Consultancy. “I am still a scientist…, but I am so much more.” As a medical consultant, I can offer companies my expertise in biomedical research coupled with my extensive training and experience as a medical writer. I work with a network of other consultants to complete these projects, ultimately benefiting patients, doctors, scientists, and businesses. My future is brighter than ever, and I could not be happier.

Efficiency is the road to success By Laura Hillege

Organising, networking, closing deals, reaching challenging targets and perfectionism, that is what I am passionate about. During my Bachelor’s studies in Hospitality & Event Management (short track) from EuroCollege in Rotterdam, this passion grew even more. Since 2011, I work fulltime trying to raise the bar for myself, as well as for the team. Likewise for the BCF Career Event. In my role as Project Leader I use my experience gained and am challenged every day.

Teamwork during study or internships is very different from real company life. So, how do you learn to plan, work efficiently and deal with high work pressure? The answer isn’t so simple and can be found in much existing literature. In addition to all the tips you undoubtedly already received, I want to share my experiences with you. Manage expectations Out of enthusiasm you would rather jumpstart a new assignment or project directly. But, is this the right thing to do? I can say that this is often not the case. Your employer’s expectations may be different than initially thought. Take time to scope the assignment beforehand, this will bring success. What are the expectations? When and how should the results be delivered? Whatever size the assignment is, reserve this time to scope. Starting over or making adjustments ends up being more time consuming and is not beneficial to the quality of your work. Imagine being your supervisor or manager and think of what you would then expect. Priority setting For many of us this is more often than not 42 Efficiency is the road to success

the most difficult. Various stakeholders are involved, each having their own planning. What needs to be done first and how do I know what has priority? Here again setting expectation is important. Make sure you put all activities in the planning and give each activity a category, deadline and time estimation. It is up to you whatever fancy format you would like to use. What matters is that you learn to assess your division of time critically and estimate whether this is realistic. Your supervisor can play an important role. Make sure you plan a weekly meeting of at least 15 minutes to discuss the planning for the next week, e.g. each Friday. Indicate if there is a conflict in the planning and suggest priorities, what can be postponed etc. In this way you can show proactivity in your way of working and are providing solutions to potential problems which results in an efficient and short meeting. Raise the alarm It is extremely annoying to have to tell with a bellyache, that you have failed to meet the deadline on the day itself. You have worked hard, but it went differently than expected. This can happen to everyone. What is

Laura Hillege

important is how you deal with it. The most important aspect is COMMUNICATION. It cannot be the case that you just find out on the day of the deadline that you are not going to make it. When you critically assess your planning and work, this should be noted sooner. Notify your supervisor on time to help you adjusting the planning if necessary. Do not create your own island! Note: people make mistakes. It is not about making mistakes, but the way you handle them and try to avoid them for the future! Mail overload For most people this will sound familiar; your day is over within a minute because of your mail. You prefer to answer emails immediately and strive to keep your inbox empty. Unfortunately, reality is different. If you want to continue this, you will never manage to finish your work in time. Common tips are switching off email notification, not starting the day with cleaning your inbox and not including emails on your action list. I want to add some tips from my personal experience. All mails are important, but not all urgent. A reply on the same day is not necessary. Add to your own

mails when you expect a reply, then it is clear for both sides what to expect. Try to keep your inbox organised, this keeps a cool head. Create a clear structure and drag your mails to the right folder after finishing. Keep other mails that require follow up in your inbox and give each mail a category; urgent, waiting for response etc. It is easy to sort by category and handle them all in one time. Making notes and reminding myself to get the answer is no longer necessary, just filter on ‘waiting for response’ category and send reminders directly. Are you finished with the mail? Give the category ‘store’ and file all mails at the end of the day or week together. This is efficient and does not distract you from your core activities. The road to success is efficiency. Integrate these tips into your way of working and improve your efficiency! Good luck.

Efficiency is the road to success 43

The journey of my career path By Violet Petit-Steeghs

During my master studies in Molecular Life Sciences at Maastricht University, I discovered that I was more interested in discussing my research results, than staying focused on filling tubes with 20 µl solution or selecting specifically mutated fruit flies (with curled wings) with a microscope. Due to my interest in the societal implications of science, I decided to start a second Master in Applied Communication Sciences at Wageningen University. Analysing the societal impact of intelligent prosthesis, mapping the ethical considerations of clinical trials and communicating the risks of Q-fever, it was like stepping into a warm bath, comforting. I combined my thesis with a traineeship at the Rathenau Institute. For this traineeship I worked in Japan to compare the nanotechnological developments in the Netherlands and Japan and the way potential societal implications are handled. After my studies, I had no idea about my career possibilities outside research. I knew I wanted to get to know the healthcare and Life Sciences field and work in a communicative position, but had to switch between various positions to find out what suited my personality and interest. It is like finding a partner, not everyone marries with the first person he or she dates. I started as a marketing manager for an international company that produces products for Life Sciences research, then switched to a project manager position and organised events in Life Sciences and healthcare. This position gave me the opportunity to get to know a broad range of companies and organisations in the field. After almost two years of project management experience, I felt the urge to go back to working with content. I was offered a position of healthcare consultant and helped healthcare organisations to implement the idea of Value Based Healthcare. During this job I discovered that I was more 44 The journey of my career path

scientifically than economically minded and missed the real societal impact of my work. Therefore I decided not to look for another job, but to discover what I really wanted! I started a search of organisations and people whose activities I found most appealing. I looked online via Google and LinkedIn and talked with relevant people in the field. When I found the profile of the head of the Athena Institute, a research department of VU University, I thought: this is what I want to do! Now I am working as a researcher and teacher at the Athena Institute. The Athena Institute studies and designs interfaces between science and society. I specifically focus on patient participation and how patients’ views can be used for innovating current healthcare paths. Within this position I combine consultancy, research and teaching. It gives me the possibility to integrate my interests and past experiences. In my job, no work week is the same. Each day is a dynamic combination of activities consisting of teaching, project management, contact with clients and conducting research. To give you an impression: last week I facilitated a group discussion with eight young mothers, who had given birth several months ago, and discussed their experiences with

“Step out of your comfort zone and start the uncertain journey of discovering your career! “ the quality of care during their pregnancy and delivery; I interviewed a physician about her experiences with patient participation and analysed the weblog stories of parents with a child with a congenital lung disease to discover their perspective on the delivered care and possibilities for improvement. I also had a meeting with an intern to discuss a research proposal and talked with Bachelor students of the VU about the perspectives of different stakeholders on the free market forces in healthcare. And I have been thinking about my new article: what set up shall I use and which journal would be most suitable? I ended the week with a meeting with an advisory council to present the preliminary results of a project and to brainstorm about potential future steps. Through my career choices, I got to know various employers and working environments.

This not only made me realise what kind of work I like to do and what I am good at, but it also made me appreciate and enjoy the fact that I had found a job that fits me. People often say that it is not good to switch jobs too often, because it shows you are not loyal or you don’t have perseverance. But which is worse, pursuing fulfilment or staying in a job that makes you (and thus your social and work environment) unhappy. So step out of your comfort zone and start the uncertain journey of discovering your career!
