“In my leadership role my aim is to have a positive impact on the school community with the support of the Christ the King Galgani House Coordinator, Mr Noye, and the members of Galgani House. Being a leader is about encouraging others and inspiring them to be the best they can be. Following in the footsteps of St Gemma Galgani, I hope that as House Captain I can build up team spirit and encourage my peers to strive for all that is good.” STEPHANIE GRECH (YEAR 9) CHRIST THE KING GALGANI HOUSE CAPTAIN

Principal’s Address Marco DiCesare Throughout the course of any school semester, an enormous amount is accomplished. I would like to congratulate all students and staff on their achievements and contributions, whether it was developing a new skill or teaching technique, or achieving something great and perhaps unexpected. I also thank parents for their continued support of the College. Some of the highlights from Semester 1 include: »» The formal opening and blessing of the new and refurbished buildings and facilities conducted by Bishop Long »» Many parents and visitors to the College have commented on the more welcoming and functional facilities »» Chisholm Court being utilised as an alternate teaching space as well as a gathering place

“I have always enjoyed having a leadership role throughout my school life. It all started when I was a school captain at Our Lady’s Primary School in Sunshine; it really inspired me to continue taking on leadership positions here at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College. I am fortunate to have such great people to look up to. I look forward to being motivated alongside the other three St John’s Campus Captains and Director of Campus Ms Banks.” AARON BUTTIGIEG (YEAR 9) ST JOHN’S CAMPUS CAPTAIN, MENTORING

»» Both the St John’s and Sacred Heart campuses coming together in Chisholm Court for the ANZAC day commemorative ceremony, something that I am sure will happen on many more occasions »» The Chapel being used to celebrate Eucharist on numerous occasions, being a sacred space for reflective Religious Education classes and meditation, as well as for regular prayer and other liturgical services »» Sacred Heart day masses celebrated in the Auditorium and the Fair conducted in Chisholm Court and the basketball courts The College is also very proud of the successful implementation of the new Vertical House Structure and Learner Mentor System. I thank and congratulate all students and staff for their efforts to embrace this important change and ensure that positive outcomes are achieved for all.

Student Leaders Congratulations to the talented group of students who will lead College initiatives in Environment, Mentoring, Social Justice and Events this year. We have already seen their confidence grow, along with their skills in public speaking and teamwork, and look forward to their work in Semester 2.

New Buildings Open

Prayer God of Refuge and Solace,

The College was delighted to unveil revitalised recreation and administration areas that will benefit students and staff, both now and for generations to come.

Your son Jesus offered respect and dignity to those society ignored, forgot, rejected and failed.

We were joined by Bishop Vincent Long as well as principals from local Catholic primary and secondary schools to celebrate the official opening of the Chapel, Chisholm Court and administration areas at the St John’s and Sacred Heart campus.

Caroline Chisholm’s work for immigrants, young women and families for many decades gave hope, skills and economic opportunity to those society disregarded and denigrated as unworthy of their support.

Bishop Long presided over the blessing, and two of our College Captains shared the stories behind the naming of some of our new spaces. The Chapel is named after Fr Andre Coindre, of the Sacred Heart Brothers, who founded what is now Caroline Chisholm Catholic College. The Chisholm Court, which features a bronze statue of Caroline Chisholm in honour of our namesake, is an area where students socialise and relax at recess and lunchtime, as well as pass through on their way to classes.

Opening and blessing of new buildings

Caroline would assist anyone who needed her help, regardless of faith, race or culture. She was a prophet of her time. She is a role model for today. May her anniversary be a reminder to work for justice.

The design and artworks of the renewed spaces are integrated within the architecture and landscape with the aim of creating a sense of journey, inspiration, contemplation and storytelling as you move through the College.

Give us the courage to act for the outcast with love and justice; without fear or favour; without judgement or criticism; without counting the cost. May your will be done and not ours.

We acknowledge College Business Manager, Mrs Irma DeGuzman, who has maintained a calm and methodical approach in supporting the renovations over the last 18 months. We would also like to thank our architects at Orchard Design and Branch Studios for their wonderful work of turning our vision into reality.

We make our prayer in the name of Our Lady Help of Christians.

Future upgrades are planned for the science laboratories at St John’s and Sacred Heart campus, as well as the Madeline Performing Arts Centre and administration areas at Christ the King.

Amen

Building Relationships At the beginning of the year, the College implemented an important change to its structure with the Vertical House and Learner Mentor System. The Vertical House Structure places students of different year levels – Years 7-9 and Years 10-12 – in the same home rooms, now referred to as Learner Mentor Groups, with the same Learner Mentor for at least three years. The Learner Mentor comes to know each student and

their parents very well, building a strong relationship and meeting with the student and their parents three times a year to discuss progress across the curriculum. The Learner Mentor approach is linked to our ‘social emotional’ learning program and connects good wellbeing with effective learning. Parents can view the Learning Curve Program with their sons and daughters online at learningcurve. com.au to understand the resources available to staff and students to engage

in discussion about a number of areas of development, including organisational skills, relationships, recognition of character strengths and building personal resilience. We have already seen amazing outcomes from the transition, including peer-to-peer support from older students who can share their experiences with others first hand, as well as positive feedback from families at parent and Learner Mentor meetings.

College Staff Lead State

Vocational Education and Training Award

The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) recently recognised the expertise of two of our staff members in appointing them to leadership roles – and enabling our students to benefit from the valuable insights they will gain.

Caroline Chisholm Catholic College won a vocational education and training award at the Auspiced Training Industry Partnership Annual Conference.

College English teacher Ms Karen Welberry is now also a member of the Literature Text Advisory Panel, while Head of Learning – Technology Mr Colin Chapman has been appointed as a State Reviewer for VCE Systems Engineering. A number of other College staff members are also VCAA exam assessors with first-hand knowledge of what it takes to attain excellent results.

The award for Excellence in Documentation is a fitting reward for the hard work and commitment of our Vocational Education and Training (VET) staff, as well as the high standard of our vocational education courses. Congratulations to Applied Learning Coordinator Mr Bernard O’Keefe who has overseen the introduction of a number of VET Units 1 & 2 and the progression of these courses into Units 3 & 4, as well as to the teachers of these subjects.

Champion Debaters College debate teams are performing exceptionally well in the 2016 Schools Competition, which is ongoing and will end in August.

Topics of debate included the legalisation of Uber, media reporting on ongoing criminal trials and Australia’s refugee intake, among many more.

All of the four teams entered have won in the first round, and three of the four won their second round debates too.

Debating is a valuable skill for students, promoting confidence, effective public presentation and critical thinking.

Staff Engagement in Professional Learning

‘100 High School Sketchbooks’ – a forthcoming print and e-book designed to feature outstanding art examples from around the world – will include the work of our very own VCE Art student Cecilia Rafanan.

Teaching staff and learning support officers were involved in professional learning in Restorative Practices, guest presented by David Vinegrad (above).

Cecilia’s work was chosen from more than 600 entries by the Student Art Guide, a website designed to promote

the work of art students aged 14 to 18 around the world, for its inaugural publication. While Cecilia has been into art since kindergarten, the acceptance of her work was a pleasant surprise – she has no plans to turn art into her career, instead looking to study science at university and keep art as a hobby.

The initiative helped equip staff with further tools to build strong pillars of communication between them, students, parents and the wider community.

Celebrating Excellence Some of the top students of 2015

SEN IOR LEA RN IN G

Employers Applaud Students Congratulations to VCAL students who recently participated in work experience – employers praised the students’ work ethic, motivation and determination, with several students also offered future apprenticeships or employment. Work experience provides insights for students in their desired industry, helps them develop soft skills and builds realworld contacts and job readiness. Special mentions to the following students: »» Steven Fraser who showed great determination and resilience in finding the placement he really wanted at Signarama South Melbourne by making countless phone calls to get it »» Kayla Grech at a hairdressing salon with staff looking forward to having Kayla full time in the future

We launched the 2016 academic year with events to celebrate the achievements of our most recent crop of graduates. Among those honoured at a mass and opening assembly were the top 20 students of the class of 2015 – leaders in learning excellence who have taken to heart the College ethos of being the best you are called to be. Speaking at the assembly was 2015 dux Dylan Jape who achieved an impressive ATAR score of 99.6 (out of a total 99.95) as well as perfect subject study scores of 50 out of 50 in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematical Methods and Biology. Now studying Biomedical Science at Monash University, Dylan highlighted the importance of perseverance, determination and the support of others to reach your potential. He said: “If you had told me just a few years ago that I’d address you all as the Dux of 2015, I would have laughed. In year 10, I was struggling in English, just getting by in Science and nearly failing in mathematics. So what happened? I think it comes down to just two reasons for success. The first, is the people that supported me through my studies. Teachers, friends, classmates and my family. They drove

me, supported me and encouraged me. It was this support that gave me the second key to success; purpose. I realised I wanted to succeed, I wanted to prove wrong any doubts anyone ever had in me. That realisation drove me all the way here today, it made me pour hundreds if not thousands of hours into studying because I was determined to never take a step back again. If you had to take away one thing from this, it’s that you can turn it around. I’m living proof that you can. You have to ask yourself; what is actually important to me? At the end of the day, when I look back, what will I be most proud of? What will make me happy?

Now studying Biomedical Science at Monash University, Dylan highlighted the importance of perseverance, determination and the support of others to reach your potential.

»» Brandon Linsley at Radisson Restaurant with the manager asking for more students from our College because he was so impressed with Brandon’s work Caroline Chisholm Catholic College is committed to providing every opportunity for students to achieve their best in their individual talents and interests.

Year 12 Retreat Year 12 students recently had the opportunity to come together, reflect on their faith and strengthen their sense of community on a retreat – a valuable exercise in what can be a stressful year.

You have to ask yourself these questions. And when you do have the answer, make it a reality.” Dylan was honoured again in April at the 2016 Premier’s VCE Awards ceremony, winning the Premier’s Award for Mathematical Methods. The Premier’s VCE Awards acknowledge outstanding results of students and pay tribute to principals, teachers and families who play a valuable role in supporting and encouraging students during their studies.

»» Madeline Langdale who was offered a job at disability service provider Mambourin next year after she completes her VET at the College

Divided into three groups at Lake Dewar, Campaspe Downs and Amberley, the students also discussed potential future challenges they may face beyond the College’s walls at the two-night retreat in April.

Parading Dance Skills at Moomba College students of all ages joined together in an out-of-classroom opportunity to perform in front of thousands of spectators at the Moomba Parade. They paid tribute to the men and women who help to defend Australia through dance. Students excelled in performing a demanding routine which combined marching, strong angular shapes and high energy dancing in unison, choreographed by Dance & Drama teacher Ms Cailin Debrincat. Students enjoyed the opportunity to make friendships with participants from other year levels, and follow up on the success the College enjoyed at Moomba last year with a Cat in the Hat theme.

“I would love to continue to have dance in my life; a possible career for me in the future would be a dance teacher. What I enjoyed most about being a part of the Moomba parade was learning the choreography and working with a great group of girls across different year levels.” Kayla Bajzek, Year 12 “If I didn’t have the opportunity to dance in the Moomba parade, it is very unlikely that I would have met these amazing and talented students. In the dance, we tried to portray courage and strength in a creative way.” Mikayla Camilleri, Year 12

We wish all Year 12s good luck for Semester 2 and remind them to reach out to their peers or teachers if they feel overwhelmed or need help.

Girls AFL Flourishes Caroline Chisholm Catholic College fielded two feisty female Aussie rules football teams at the Girls AFL Tournament held by the Sports Association of Catholic Co-educational Secondary Schools (SACCSS) in May. Watched by recruiters from the Victoria University Western Spurs Women’s Football Club, the teams competed against 10 other schools, playing eight games across the junior and senior competitions.

Music students with Phil Ceberano

ARTS

Music News Rock veteran Phil Ceberano shared stagecraft strategies and more at a recent workshop with Year 11 and 12 VCE VET music classes. Ceberano – best known as Kate Ceberano’s band leader and guitarist – joined drummer Thom Mann to discuss their experiences in the music industry when performing in front of large audiences, on TV or recording albums in the studio.

The Year 12 VCE VET music class also performed at two instrumental musical soirees in the Quin Auditorium, joined by students studying instruments under Gillian Gurtler, Wayne Townsend-Booth, Natasha Rodrigues and Gideon Brazil. Our student musicians also made a fine showing at the Sacred Heart Day mass, with 150 choir members and a 25-piece orchestra providing liturgical music for the College.

VCE Art Camp Units 3 & 4 visual arts students attended a camp at Lady Northcote in Glenmore at the end of Term 1 to work on their already-extensive folios and gain inspiration in a new, outdoor environment. “The crown jewel of the media workshop would have been the team effort in creating the short film ‘Art Camp’, which we planned, shot and edited in only two hours. The sense of shared pride in the completion of such a project was a real highlight for all media students.” Andrew Dinh, studying Media “The most amazing part of the art camp experience was being able to rediscover our own abilities. Starting fresh and exploring new ideas in a new environment allowed us to express our

Dazzling Latin Dance Students have developed new skills and terrific teamwork through Latin Dance lessons as part of the Year 9 End of Year Enrichment Week Program. The College partnered with external experts Celebrar A Vida Dance to run the sessions, which culminated with a fantastic performance as part of the Junior Arts Performance evening. The six boys and four girls were so enthusiastic about the opportunity that they rehearsed together outside of class time, with their teamwork showing in the quality of their performance.

Congratulations coaches Ryan Noye and Bernard O’Keefe and to all players on the day, with particular honourable mentions to Year 7 Nikita Katsantonis and Year 10 Claudia Saric whose excellent performances were commended by the umpires. We are now looking forward to August when the senior girls will take on Marian College in the annual female footy clash.

Swimmers’ Success Our swim squad’s early mornings, hard work and dedication have been rewarded at the SACCSS Swimming Carnival. In the lead-up to the carnival, swim squad members gathered at 6.50am at the LeBreton Swim Centre for an hour of intensive training before school. Coached by teacher Colin Chapman and ex-student and previous College swim star Robyn Lee, 17 students competed against 15 other schools at the annual competition at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre in March. The College won the Junior Girls

artistic concepts with pride.” Nina Phillips, studying Studio Arts “Our class had a great time at camp which brought us a lot of closer, and helped us develop new skills and ideas.” Lorenzo Rodas, studying Visual Communication & Studio Arts

Golf Champion Golfing prodigy Lance Smith took out the championship at the SACCSS Golf Competition for the third year running, winning by two shots at Werribee Golf Club in February. Lance, who plays off a handicap of three at Sunshine Golf Course, is aiming to gain a PGA traineeship at the end of the year to launch his golf career – with the hope of eventually becoming a professional.

Aggregate, Junior Team Aggregate and Senior Boys Aggregate for Division 2. Honourable mentions to the following students for their exceptional individual performances: »» Martin Ta, Year 7 awarded the Individual Male 13 year old Champion for Division 2 »» Kimberley Raymundo, Year 7 awarded the Individual Female 13 year old Champion for Division 2 »» Anthony Phan, Year 8 awarded the Individual Male 14 year old Champion for Division 2, for his second year in a row

Year 7s Shine It’s always exciting to see up-andcoming athletes at the College, and this semester did not disappoint. More than half the Year 7 cohort tried out for a spot on our SACCSS Premier League teams in basketball, volleyball, soccer and netball. The interschool competition involved our teams playing weekly matches against other schools in the western conference of the SACCSS throughout Term 2. Highlights from the season include: »» Boys soccer team won all of their matches to secure top spot on the ladder and a home final »» Girls volleyball team also went through the entire season undefeated – without dropping a single set »» Girls netball team won four out of five games securing their spot in the finals for the first time in more than five years Well done to all players and coaches involved.
