Meet Janice Hayes Janice has been a Real Estate Agent for Berkshire Hathaway Home Services since passing the Georgia licensing exam in 2003. In January of 2014 she became a Patient Consultant for InHealth Technologies. The story of Janice Hayes goes beyond her award winning work with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services or InHealth Technologies. Janice grew up in Oklahoma City and Kansas City and lives in Atlanta. She married her husband in 1971, was a dental assistant and office manager until her two sons were born in the early 80’s and took on the most important job of raising her children. In 1997 Janice had a laryngectomy followed by radiation. Her life changed in many different ways. She started attending meetings of the Greater Atlanta Voice Masters, (GAVM). It was there she met Jane Del Vecchio who became her mentor. Janice realized that her life was just getting started. Eventually, she was asked to join the GAVM board of directors, served as Treasurer, Vice President, and editor of the monthly newsletter. She is currently the President of the GAVM. The experience with the GAVM gave Janice encouragement to continue to increase her role as an advocate and spokesperson in the laryngectomee community. From 2006 to 2008 she served on the board of the International Association of Laryngectomees. Janice continues to give back to the community. She’s spoken to thousands of children by giving lectures at school about the dangers of smoking. She’s spoken to several different smoking cessation groups at schools, hospitals, churches, military bases and has even appeared in the documentary “Fatal Addiction” about the dangers of teenage smoking.

Awards and Honors Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Life Time Million Dollar Club member. Received the Company Wide Humanitarian award in 2004. Janice resides in the Atlanta area, her home for more than 35 years. She continues to work for Berkshire Hathaway Home Services and make appearances in Georgia to promote smoking cessation. She enjoys spending time with her husband Jim, her 3 grandchildren and her Shih Tzu named Fergie.

By creating a small surgical puncture just inside the stoma, from the back wall of the trachea into the esophageal wall, a voice prosthesis can be placed into this passage to enable tracheoesophageal speech. Voice is produced by temporarily blocking the stoma so that exhaled air from the lungs can be directed from the trachea through the prosthesis into the esophagus and then out through the mouth. Fluent, conversational speech may be acquired within just a few days.

Clinician Placed Indwelling Voice Prostheses are for laryngectomees who are unable or reluctant to perform the routine removal and insertion necessary for the cleaning and maintenance of patientchangeable voice prostheses. Patient Changeable Voice Prostheses that patients may insert, remove and clean. Special Order Voice Prostheses are offered with a wide range of features and sizes for patients who have special needs. Advantage and Dual Valve Voice Prostheses are for patients whose voice prostheses are susceptible to Candida growth. Both valves are imbedded with silver oxide, an antimicrobial agent that has been proven to eliminate or reduce the need for antifungal agents.

Blom-Singer® Flushing Device and Cleaning Brush These accessories are an integral part of daily maintenance. The Flushing device allows a voice prosthesis to remain in the tracheoesophageal passage while routine cleaning is performed. Blom-Singer® HME For 24-Hour Use

Loss of nasal function as a result of laryngectomy can result in functional changes to tracheobronchial mucosa and lung function. These changes are due to dry cool air replacing the warm humid air which was provided by the function of the nose. A total laryngectomy surgery also results in a decrease resistance which has effect on lung function. These functional changes can result in increased mucus production, an increase in coughing and an increase in chest infections. OPEN

Daily use of an HME provides the trachea and bronchial mucosa and lungs with warm, humidified air with increased resistance. This warm, humidified and filtered air helps keep the mucosa from drying out and the increased resistance keeps the alveoli of the lungs from collapsing resulting in better lung function. CLOSED

Blom-Singer® Laryngectomy Tubes Blom-Singer® Laryngectomy Tubes are durable, lightweight silicone tubes that are used to keep the tracheostoma open after laryngectomy. They are available in a variety of sizes/styles and contours to the postoperative tracheal anatomy. For use with a voice prosthesis, the recessed area may be modified (fenestrated) by a trained clinician for use with a Blom-Singer voice prosthesis. However, for convenience a pre-fenestrated series is available that eliminates the need for manual fenestration. InHealth Technologies® Post-Operative Care Kit Kit includes; 30 Blom-Singer® HME Cartridges, one Fahl Laryngotec® Laryngectomy Tube and one nylon shower collar. The Laryngotec® laryngectomy tube is a soft flexible silicone tube which is designed to fit inside the tracheostoma and maintain its size and shape. Due to the high degree of flexibility and to the excellent material characteristics, the Laryngotec adapts very well to the shape of the trachea and is very comfortable. The Laryngotec is able to hold a heat and moisture exchange (HME) cassette. The Blom-Singer® HME System is designed to help laryngectomees regain some lost functions. When placed over the stoma, the heat and moisture exchanger (HME) captures warm and moist air as it is exhaled from the body. The cool, dry air breathed in passes through the HME where it is warmed and moistened as it enters your body. To maintain a healthy respiratory tract, it’s critical to breathe in air that is filtered and contains the proper heat and moisture content. The Blom-Singer HME is now for 24-hour use. The shower collar is a nylon collar that attaches above the stoma to shield the open airway/ stoma from water. The shower collar is not a closed protective system so it is important to always be careful in the presence of water and it is not intended to be used in submersion in water.

Medicare A Medicare enrollment form is available upon request. Please contact our customer service department for a copy of the form. If a patient is a Medicare beneficiary, we will need a completed Medicare enrollment form and a copy of the beneficiary’s Medicare insurance card. This form need only be submitted one time, unless information such as address or eligibility status has changed. Once current information is on file, Medicare claims will be submitted on a routine monthly basis for Medicare primary customers. All orders must be prepaid — we do not accept Medicare assignment. Medicare reimbursement will come directly to the patient. Insurance Reimbursement A copy of your purchase receipt will be mailed to you after each shipment/purchase. These receipts may be included in the claim to a private insurance carrier.
