ELIGIBILITY CLARIFICATIONS FOR FEEDER SCHOOLS AND HOME SCHOOLED COMPETITORS 

All 5th through 8th grade students who attend a K-12 private school or a feeder school which leads either directly or indirectly to the high school may compete on behalf of the associated high school no matter how the school or school district classifies the grade levels in the "middle school" or "junior high." For example, 5th grade students of a school district with a 6th through 8th grade middle school may still compete on behalf of the high school even if the student is attending an elementary school in the district.

5th through 8th grade students who are attending a private or parochial school that terminates in grade 8 may compete on behalf of the public high school of the school district in which they reside. Proof of residency must be provided via a copy of a utility bill in the custodial parent(s)' name(s).

Alternatively, 8th grade students of private schools that do not have an associated high school and who have determined which private high school they will attend may apply by letter to the competition co-chair for permission to compete on behalf of the aforementioned high school. This exception applies to 8th grade students only.

5th through 12th grade students who are homeschooled may compete on behalf of the public high school located in the school district in which they reside.

MUSIC INTERPRETATION Skaters must enter at their current Free Skate level passed or one level higher. Categories will include Pre-preliminary, Preliminary, Pre-Juvenile, Juvenile, Intermediate, Novice, and Junior/Senior. Music Interpretation consists of a single program composed entirely by the skater demonstrating ability to interpret music by combining moves, turns, footwork, jumps and spins. A Warm-up period consists of 1 minute without music followed by 4 minutes with the selected music played twice. Skaters will then leave the ice and be taken to a locker room where there will be no communications with teammates or parents. Each skater will hear the music one more time with his/her back to the ice at rink side while the prior competitor is performing. The judges give one mark only, and the emphasis is on interpretation of the music. This event may be judged in combination with guest judges. Levels may be combined due to lack of entries. The duration of music will be 1:30 minutes maximum for all levels.

ARTISTIC SHOWCASE There is no limit to the number of skaters a high school team may enter in this event. 1. Skaters will have prepared a program with music of their choice. Vocal music is permitted. 2. There are no required elements in this event. Skaters will be judged on originality, musical and artistic expression, audience appeal, choreography and costume. 3. The individual event durations are maximum times and are based on the National Showcase time guidelines which may vary significantly with other area competition. 4. Thirty seconds will be allowed before each performance for placement of props. The referee may disallow props that are deemed dangerous to the skater (e.g. sharp objects, feathers, dangling beads, loose paper, and items that may affect the conditions of the ice.) 5. Technical elements will be judged only on their appropriateness to the music. 6. Guest judges may be used for this event. 7. Skaters may not compete below their US Figure Skating freeskate test level but may skate up one level higher. In the interest of running an event, test levels may be combined if entry numbers are low. Skaters placing fourth and higher in Preliminary and higher artistic/showcase solo events including adult events, may be qualified to enter the next National Showcase. MANEUVER TEAM EVENTS 1. 2. 3.

A HSAC team may enter only one team in each competitive level. Each team will select 2 – 4 skaters to compete the 4 elements for each team event. Each team member may compete up to 2 elements in each team event. If possible, teams with more than 4 skaters should select a different group of skaters for the spin event than those chosen to compete in the maneuver event to allow more skaters to participate. 4. Teams must attempt all the listed elements in each category: If a team has one athlete perform more than half of the elements, anything over half of the elements performed by that athlete will receive no credit. 5. If a competitor performs an element higher than that listed, that element will receive no credit. For example, if the element specified is a Salchow jump and the competitor performs a double Salchow jump, no credit is given for this element. 6. An athlete may compete for only one team. Athletes may “skate up” to any level they desire, but they may not compete on a team at a lower level than the highest test they have passed.
