Meet Your Speakers and Moderators Dr. Jeremy Frank, PhD C. Psych, Independent Practice Dr. Frank obtained his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Windsor in 2004. His training and experience to date includes work in psychological trauma, the treatment of chronic pain, the assessment of disability, and rehabilitation following injuries. Dr. Frank has conducted research on the use of the Personality Assessment Inventory for the psychological assessment of claimants who have been involved in motor vehicle accidents and has coauthored a book chapter with newly developed norms for this population in 2010. Dr. Frank currently serves as President of CAPDA and was involved in the development of the CAPDA Board Certification Diplomate Program in Psychological and Neuropsychological Disability Assessment. He has performed hundreds of psychological disability assessments both at the request of plaintiff and defense, largely for individuals who have been involved in motor vehicle accidents (including Post-104 disability, assessment of treatment necessity, Catastrophic determination, and other specified benefits), for individuals with WSIB claims, and for individuals in other personal injury contexts (e.g., slip and fall, medical malpractice suits). He also provides psychotherapy (with a rehabilitation focus) to automobile accident victims and victims of work-related injuries. Dr. Frank currently runs a multidisciplinary private practice clinic where he and his colleagues see individuals with a wide range of psychological difficulties. Dr. Frank also consults on a part-time basis to Canada Border Services Agency where he provides risk assessment, crisis intervention, triage/treatment planning, and cognitive-behavioural therapy to detainees of various cultures/backgrounds held at the Immigration Holding Centre. Dr. Anthony Feinstein, M.D., Ph.D. Professor, University of Toronto Dr. Anthony Feinstein received his medical degree in South Africa at the University of the Witwatersrand. Thereafter he completed his training in Psychiatry at the Royal Free Hospital in London, England, before training as a neuropsychiatrist at the Institute of Neurology, Queen Square in London. His Master of Philosophy and Ph.D. Degree were obtained through the University of London, England. He is currently a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. His neuropsychiatry research focuses on the search for cerebral correlates of behavioural disorders associated with multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, and hysteria (Conversion Disorders). He is past Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee of the MS Society of Canada.

Dr. Feinstein is also involved in a series of studies of relevance to current issues within our society. The questions being addressed are: How are journalists affected emotionally by their work in zones of conflict and what motivates them to pursue such dangerous occupations? In 2000-2001 he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship to study mental health issues in postapartheid Namibia. Dr. Feinstein is the author of Dangerous Lives: War and the Men and Women Who Report It (Thomas Allen, Toronto 2003), In Conflict (New Namibia Books, 1998), The Clinical Neuropsychiatry of Multiple Sclerosis (Cambridge University Press 1999, with a second edition in 2007), Michael Rabin, America’s Virtuoso Violinist (Amadeus Press, 2005, with a second edition in 2011) and Journalists Under Fire: the Psychological Hazards of Covering War (John Hopkins University Press). His most recent book is Battle Scarred (Tafelberg Press, 2011). He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and has authored many book chapters. In 2012, a documentary, “Under Fire” produced by Dr. Feinstein and based on his research of journalists in war zones was shortlisted for an Academy Award. The documentary received a 2012 Peabody Award. Dr. Angela Mailis, MD, MSC, FRCPC (PHYSMED) Dr. Mailis is the founder/director of the Comprehensive Pain Program of the Toronto Western Hospital, University Health Network since 1982; a specialist of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Physical Medicine; has a Masters degree from the Institute of Medical Science, University of Toronto; Senior Investigator at the Krembil Neuroscience Centre; Full Professor, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto; Nationally known Evidence based Guideline developer; Chair, ACTION Ontario (a not for profit organization for education and advocacy for chronic pain patients); highly respected medicolegal expert in matters of chronic pain across the country; has published extensively her clinical research and has lectured around the world on matters of chronic pain; Popular science writer and CARPAdvocacy electronic newsletter contributor monthly; member of the Narcotic Advisory Panel and the Working Group (Ontario Ministry of Health) for the establishment of an Interdisciplinary Comprehensive Chronic Pain Strategy for the province of Ontario.

Assist physicians who wish to develop the skills and expertise necessary to provide professional quality medico-legal services. Advise the medical profession at large, as well as other professions, organizations and government agencies, on all matters regarding medical evaluations;



EDUCATION: Provide education regarding third party independent evaluations through seminars, workshops and podcasts;



STANDARDS: Unite into a single organization all Canadian practitioners who are committed to the highest possible professional standards in the performance of third party medical evaluations. Advance the interests of members by developing and publishing appropriate standards, guidelines and positions related to practical, professional, ethical medico-legal work;



ADVOCACY: Be available as an expert body for consultation by other organizations and government agencies on all matters concerning medical evaluations in Canada;



REFERRALS: Assist the legal profession and insurance industry in locating physicians with suitable expertise, who are regionally available and interested in offering their services;



NETWORKING & COMMUNICATIONS: Provide an opportunity to meet colleagues and share best practices. Communicate newsworthy information to members from across the country from newsletters and the CSME website.

The Society has 3 categories of membership 1.

CLINICIAN MEMBER: a clinician and regulated health professional who is actively engaged in the independent assessment of health and function as these relate to impairment and disability. Members in good standing may vote at all meetings.

2.

ASSOCIATE MEMBER: an individual with an interest in the independent assessment of health and function as these relate to impairment and disability. Associate Members in good standing may vote at all meetings.

3.

EMERITUS MEMBER: individuals who are members in good standing who provide proof of retirement acceptable to the Membership Committee. Such members shall be entitled to pay 50% of dues and maintain their member status within CSME, including all rights attached thereto.

Upon admission to the Canadian Society of Medical Evaluator, the applicant will receive:     

Publication of the Evaluator—CSME’s Official e-Newsletter Ability to use the CSME logo, publicly convey their affiliation with CSME.
