KEYNOTE - Nursing Leadership in the Healthcare Vortex

Sharon Pappas, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN

This presentation will focus on the cost pressures brought about by a reforming health care system have impacted caregiving relationships pushing the caregivers into a series of tasks that have to be performed under time constraints. The importance of understanding value (an outcome that is expressed as a combination of quality, service, and cost) as an important outcome of nursing practice is essential. A leader’s understanding of measurement of value and the ability of nurses to understand their contribution to value is at the core of our accountability to assure patients receive safe care. Dr. Sharon H. Pappas has served as chief nursing officer of Porter Adventist Hospital since March, 1998 and in 2008 became the Chief Nursing Executive at Centura Health system. She has served on the AONE Board of Directors. She has also been a faculty member and preceptor at Regis University and an assistant professor at University of Colorado, Denver College of Nursing. Dr. Pappas holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the School of Nursing at Medical College of Georgia and a master’s degree in nursing administration from Georgia College, School of Nursing. She received her PhD from University of Colorado Denver College of Nursing with research focus on cost and clinical outcomes that are sensitive to nursing. In policy development for the state, she completed five years of service on the Colorado Board of Nursing and served on the Governor’s Task Force for Nurse Staffing. Dr. Pappas has authored multiple articles for peer-reviewed journals and done numerous conference presentations throughout her career focusing on the role nurses and the nursing environment play in patient safety and hospital costs.
