2016 Global Health Symposium: Strengthening Clinical and Research Capacity at Home and Abroad

FRIDAY OCTOBER 21 2016

About the Symposium BACKGROUND: The First Annual Global Health Symposium focused on Building on the Power of Partnerships and brought together over 160 participants working internationally and locally to contribute to health system strengthening initiatives. The Second Annual Symposium focused on Sustainable Solutions to Improve the Health and Lives of the Underserved at Home and Abroad.

PURPOSE:

This year’s symposium will focus on capacity building. There are great disparities in clinical and research capabilities within and between countries worldwide. At times, experts from high-resource countries drop into developing countries or underserved communities to briefly conduct a study or provide short-term clinical care. By contrast, global health partnerships are ones that are mutually-beneficial, communitydriven, and build long-term, sustainable capacity. The 2016 Global Health Symposium will look at cutting-edge work being done around the world to strengthen clinical and research capacity at home and abroad. Prominent international, national, and local experts will share their knowledge and experiences with Symposium participants. Following the success of the 2014 and 2015 Symposiums, participants will again play an integral part in the exchange of information through poster presentations, interactive panel discussions, and networking opportunities.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS The Host Committee is seeking thematically related abstracts for poster presentations. The “Call for Abstracts” will be open until August 1, 2016. The poster presentations will be an integral part of the program agenda and will contribute to the knowledge shared between southeast Michigan academic institutions, hospitals, and other organizations. In addition, authors will have their work published in the Global Health Symposium Program Book. Complete information on submission of abstracts can be found on page 6 of this brochure.

TARGET AUDIENCE The 2016 Symposium is open to all faculty, clinicians, administrators, students, residents, fellows, pharmacists, nurses, as well as others interested in global and local health.
