A life-long fencer who represented the United States at both the Senior and Veteran World Championships, Mr. Anthony has served on the Executive Committee of the FIE and as the Executive Committee Liaison to the Publicity and Promotions Committee since 2012. Mr. Anthony brings a wealth of experience to these roles as a professional who holds an extensive background in business leadership and sports promotion. A graduate of Princeton University, Mr. Anthony began his career working in sales and marketing for IBM, during which time he earned a second Ivy League degree when he received his master’s in business administration from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. Mr. Anthony’s professional career and passion for the sport of fencing merged when he founded SwordSport LLC, the leading promoter of fencing in the world. Through his work with SwordSport, Mr. Anthony has produced livestream and broadcast programming for NBC Universal Sports and ESPN; documentary films including “Black Blades” – the evolution of African-American Fencers; and has served as a broadcast analyst for World Championship, Grand Prix and World Cup events as well as the National Collegiate Athletic Association Fencing Championships. In 2012, Mr. Anthony was elected president of USA Fencing – a position he retained for the 2012-2016 quad when he was reelected earlier this year. Under Mr. Anthony’s leadership, USA Fencing has emerged from a blanket of financial and governance woes as one of the most successful National Governing Bodies in the United States. Mr. Anthony guided the organization back to positive net assets as well as an improved governance structure during the first four years of his presidency. During the last quad, the organization reached more than 30% membership growth and media visibility of both athletes and USA Fencing events and programs increased exponentially as Olympians were featured in Time Magazine, USA Today, New York Times, Sports Illustrated and other key outlets. Since being awarded a Grand Prix in 2014, USA Fencing also has received increased television coverage, including broadcast of the 2014 and 2015 Grand Prix events on the networks of NBC. Team USA’s athletes also earned unprecedented levels of success on the World Cup circuit during the last four years, winning more than 100 medals on the circuit with podium finishes across all three weapons. The quadrennium culminated in five medals at the 2015 Senior World Championships and four podiums at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. In addition to his professional commitments, Mr. Anthony remains an active saber fencer who has competed at the national and international level for more than 40 years. As a veteran fencer, Mr. Anthony has competed at two Veteran World Championships, winning silver in 2010 and placing in the top eight in 2012. Mr. Anthony is a founding member of the nationally acclaimed Peter Westbrook Foundation that uses the sport of fencing to teach life skills and improve the academic performance of disadvantaged youth in the greater New York City metro area. He is a member of The Ohio State University’s Fisher School of Business’ MBA Mentoring Program and a life-time member of the National Black MBA Association. He also serves on the Board of the Arkady Burdan Foundation in Atlanta Georgia that provides access to fencing by providing scholarships to local disadvantaged youth and as a Trustee of the Ohio CPA Foundation.

He started fencing at the age of 11 years, and during his active fencing career Nikolay Mateev achieved a wide range of very high results. Nikolay Mateev was further many times finalist at World Cup Saber Tournaments. In 1991 Nikolay Mateev moved to Iceland and took up the challenge of building up his sport in Iceland. There were around 10 fencers in Iceland at that time. Yuki OTA was born in Shiga, Japan on November 25, 1985.

After graduating from Doshisha University, he joined Morinaga & Company in 2008. He started fencing when he was a third grader at an elementary school. In high school, he won unprecedented 3 consecutive national titles at All Japan High School Championships. He is a foil fencer, three-time Olympian, two-time Olympic silver medalist (individual in 2008, team in 2012), and is currently serving as the FIE Athletes Commission president. In 2009, he reached the No.1 world ranking position. In 2009 he planned and organized a fencing event called “Yuki Ota Cup” for elementary school children. In 2012 he established a project named “Super Fencing” with the object of popularizing fencing. In 2013 he was chosen as the bidding ambassador for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games and was one contributor to the successful bidding. Giorgio Scarso was born in Modica (RG) on April 18, 1946. On February 26, 2005 he was elected President of the Italian Fencing Federation. From 2005 to 2008, under his mandate as President, Italian Fencing Federation organized the “Torino2006 World Championship”, the Mediterranean Championships in Siracusa in 2007, and, in 2008, organized the European Cadet Championships in Rovigo, the European Under-23 Championships in Monza and the Cadets and Juniors World Championships in Acireale. On November 21, 2008 was re-elected President of the Italian Federation and on December 6 of the same year he was elected member of the Executive Committee of the International Fencing Federation. On January 25, 2009 he was elected Vice President of the International Fencing Federation. During his second term in the capacity of President, Italian Fencing Federation organized the 2009 FIE Congress in Palermo, the “Catania 2011” World Championships in Catania and the 2012 European Championships in Legnano. On December 2012 he was re-elected president of the Italian Fencing Federation, and under his presidency other big international fencing events were organized in Italy, such as the 2014 FIE Congress, and the candidature of the city of Verona for the 2018 Junior and Cadet World Championships and different FIE World Cup and Grand Prix events. In the same year he was re-elected as FIE Vice President and he was elected as Italian NOC Vice President Vicariuos for the first time.

Bence SZABÓ (1962) – two-time Olympic Champion (in individual and in team), two-time Olympic silver medalist, two-time European Champion. As a sabre fencer, he carried on with the outstanding Hungarian tradition. In every Olympic Game between 1904 and 1964 the individual winner was a Hungarian sabre fencer, and after an intermission of 28 years Bence Szabó followed this path (in 1992). He was also member of the Hungarian team that won the Games in 1988. Apart from these results he gained the World Champion and European Champion titles twice, he won the Universiade and Europe Cup, he was mastered by the legendary fencing master Csaba Zarándi. His career as a sport manager is just as outstanding as it was as a fencer. He became director of his former club, UTE, one of the biggest clubs in Hungary. Afterwards he worked as the National Head Coach of the Hungarian fencing team. He was the leader of the Olympic fencing team that won one gold and two silver medals during the 2004 Games. Since 2012 he is the Secretary General of the Hungarian Olympic Committee, apart from this he actively works as a fencing coach.

Born in Mozambique in 1964, he has been in fencing for all his life. His father, Jose Valarinho, was an athlete, coach, referee and president of the Portuguese Fencing Federation as well as member of the FIE Disciplinary Commission. As an athlete, Frederico did not exceed an average level, although he was sometimes part of the Portuguese national team and reached two national titles in epee. Affected by an injury, he abandoned the practice when he was only 24, but has always remained close to the sport as a journalist and commentator on Portuguese television. Professionally, he was a journalist for over 30 years, performing managerial positions in various magazines and newspapers, and is also the author of over a dozen books. With academic training in Media, he has a Masters Degree in Sports Marketing and Management with the final thesis "Fencing: Steps to Build a Tribal Brand”. Later he became a researcher at ISCTE – Lisbon University Institute in New Marketing Trends. In 2006, following the resignation of the governing bodies of the Portuguese Fencing Federation, he agreed to become president, a post to which he was reelected in 2008 and 2012. During his term, he managed to save Portuguese Fencing Federation from a technical bankruptcy that lasted several decades and to initiate a sustainable development path of the sport in Portugal. So far, Frederico Valarinho always refused the possibility of applying for positions in international fora, considering that his attention should focus on the needs of the Portuguese Fencing Federation. Only after achieving his financial sustainability objectives for the institution he considered that conditions were created to present his candidature for the COMEX of International Fencing Federation.
