2016 CTHS Alberta Thoroughbred Sale – Yearling Preview Highlights By Consignor The 2016 CTHS Alberta Thoroughbred Sale is set to take place at the Edmonton EXPO Centre on September 18th, 2016. This event takes place as part of the 20th Anniversary of the Alberta Breeders’ Fall Classic Weekend with the Alberta Marketplace and Fall Classic races happening the preceding day and the sale on Sunday. The 2016 sale has a total of 112 entries comprised of 105 yearlings, 5 mares, 1 two year old filly and 1 weanlings. The yearling contingent includes 94 bred in Alberta, 3 in BC, 1 in California, 1 in Kentucky, 5 in Ontario and 1 Saskatchewan bred. This number is up slightly from last year which had 100 yearlings offered in the main catalogue. A variety of yearlings by Alberta based sires are on offer including Alydeed, Best of the Bests (IRE), Big Lightning, Cape Canaveral, Formal Gold, Gayego, Gilded Time, Heavenly Chorus, Imperialism, Jiggs Coz, Lanciano, Lost Canyon, Max Forever, Othello, Rascal Cat, Rosetti, Schramsberg, Storm Military, Teeman, The Trader’s Echo and Whiskey Wisdom. At press time, the Esquirol Farms sire Imperialism was number seven on the Blood Horse list of the General Canadian Leading Sires while Bar None sire Schramsberg and Gayego were number four and number seven respectively on the 2016 Canadian Leading Second Crop sire list. Yearlings are available by the successful British Columbia sires Cause to Believe, Cheroot, Numanny and Gottcha Gold. Cause to Believe is a son of Maria’s Mon while Gottcha Gold by Coronado’s Quest is the leading sire in B.C. and is consistently a top ten leading sire in Canada. Saskatchewan sires Might Vow and Mister Do It have yearlings on offer as do Ontario sires Exhi, Silent Name and Wilko. The Breeders Cup champion Wilko by Awesome Again has been a top ten Canadian sire for the past four years. Exhi currently sits at number three on the 2016 Canadian Leading Second Crop sire list. Kentucky is represented by the sires Bullet Train, Cowboy Cal, Dialed In, Dixieland Band, Elusive Quality, I Want Revenge, Jersy Town, Line of David, Old Fashioned, Run Away and Hide, Street Boss, Tale of Ekati and Twirling Candy. The California sires Champ Pegasus, Rocky Bar and Tizbud also have yearlings on offer and the Florida stallion and Breeders Cup Classic winner Fort Larned has a filly available from his first crop. A yearling by the Silver Deputy stallion Spring at Last who stands at stud in Saudi Arabia will obtainable at the sale. Bar None Ranches, Craig Smith and Stride Away Acres represent the brand new consignors to the CTHS Alberta sale. In addition, the Saskatchewan bred yearling in Gordon Algers consignment and the B.C. bred in the Stride Away Acres group will be eligible for the Western Sales Stake series. The 2016 Alberta sale has an impressive array of bloodlines and quality horses available for purchase. Make sure to mark the date on your calendar. Below are some highlights of the sale organized by consignor:

GORDON ALGER has one yearling by Mister Do It and two by Mighty Vow available. These yearlings represent an opportunity to purchase from only the second crop for the Songandaprayer stallion Mister Do It as his first foals are only two year olds this year while the first foals for the Broken Vow stallion Mighty Vow are three year olds this year.

KEN ANDERSON has three yearlings entered by the sires Numanny, Cause to Believe and The Trader’s Echo. The first foals for the A.P. Indy son Numanny are now two year olds of 2016. The yearling by the well known British Columbia sire Cause to Believe is out of the successful race mare and champion two year old filly in Alberta, Dawn of Fame ($99,263). Brand new consignor BAR NONE RANCHES is offering five yearlings by Gayego and Schramsberg. This consignment represents an opportunity to purchase the progeny from these promising sires whose progeny are now just three year olds this season. Gayego is a son of leading Canadian sire Gilded Time and won over $1.7 Million at the track. Gayego’s first Alberta sired crop are racing as two year olds this season in 2016. The Gayego filly on offer out of Moonbeam Madness may be particularly noteworthy as her dam was a successful race mare herself with over $220,000 in earnings and has already produced a winner at the track, Sass with Class ($11,831). Yearlings by the black type sire Schramsberg include a filly out of the multiple stakes placed mare, Testy Hussy ($81,738). Schramsberg’s first foals raced in 2015 and from 25 named foals of 2013, Schramsberg was represented by 4 Winners from 13 Starters. His leading earner was the Stakes Placed filly Hippie ($20,512). CAL BRITTON as Agent has an interesting opportunity to purchase a colt by the stakes winning stallion Wilko, sire of 5 stakes winners and 85 winners with earnings of almost 6 Million. The colt is the first foal for the stakes placed mare Chandlers Heart ($127,161). CALMAR STABLES AND RANCH has six yearlings available by the sires Jiggs Coz and Rosetti. Rosetti is a son of Seattle Slew out of grade I winner Chic Shirine by Mr. Prospector and was originally purchased bought by Calmar from Coolmore Stud. A $1-million auction 2-year-old and a half-brother to grade II winners Tara Roma and Waldoboro. Jiggs Coz is a graded stakes winning son of Cozzene and of particular interest among his progeny on offer may be a filly out of the Alberta champion three year old and older mare Tanika. This is the first foal for a mare that earned almost half a million dollars on the track and won twelve of her twenty six starts including nine stakes races. Another highlight of this consignment may be a Jiggs Cozz colt out of the mare M L Taylor who is a full sister to the Alberta Derby winner Xtreme Denigray ($69,784). A Rosetti yearling of particular note is a colt by Rosetti out of Sharpay (by Alphabet Soup). Sharpay is the dam of the stakes placed Charpetti ($22,987). DR. HARVEY COLE has a filly by stakes winner Lanciano on offer out of a proven race mare, Alittlebitofrouge ($138,344). This yearling is a full sister to Bow River Boy who is placed at 3. DOUG OBERG has a filly on offer by the proven sire Wilko out of the mare Vintage Moon who has produced Little Moon ($12,744). Vintage Moon is a half-sister to the stakes winner Victory Romance ($386,872). ESQUIROL FARMS has a total of six yearlings available; three by Formal Gold, one by Whiskey Wisdom and two by Big Lightning. Formal Gold is a stakes winner of 1.5 Million and has produced 331 winners of over $20 Million. Big Lightning is a son of champion Bernardini and the yearlings available in this consignment represent an opportunity to buy from his first crop. The filly by stakes winner Whiskey Wisdom is out of the proven broodmare Walk Away Rene. This mare has produced 8 winners including Catch My Fancy ($147,676) and Mr. Truthful ($171,459) and is the grand dam of Cocked and Loaded ($369,340). All the dams in this consignment are proven race mares including Papoose Dancer ($102,877), Westward Miss ($125,059), Come Hither ($114,112), Freds My Friend ($41,001) and Free of Charge ($156,897).

JOHN GALATIUK is offering an opportunity to purchase yearlings by Storm Military, champion miler in Argentina and stakes winner of $380,482. The dams of these two yearlings have both proven themselves both on the racetrack and as producers. Naughty N Haughty ($212,002) is the dam of 3 winners including Beresford ($100,674) and Cousin Charlotte ($127,254) has produced 2 winners including Keep Six ($92,682). DON GIBB has eight yearlings on offer by a variety of sires including Dialed In, Champ Pegasus, Jersey Town, Run Away and Hide, Tale of Ekati and Street Boss. The filly by stakes winner Dialed In ($941,936) is out of Miss Jennifer Lynn ($97,252) who is the dam of Alberta stakes winner Blameitontheknight ($158,882). DAWSON GUHLE and BRUCE TERNAN have two yearlings available by the leading sire in B.C., Gottcha Gold. The Gottcha Gold filly is out of Mayday Maria who has produced the Alberta stakes placed runner Ripple ($28,986). The Gottcha Gold gelding is out of Seattle Splash, dam of stakes placed Peggy Jane ($102,050). A filly by top ten third crop sire Old Fashioned is on offer and is the first foal for the mare, Harlican who is a half-sister to stakes winner Boston Express. HIGHFIELD INVESTMENT GROUP has a consignment of twelve on offer by the proven sires Wilko, Exhi, Street Boss, Cape Canaveral, Shrike and Gilded Time. This consignment also features yearlings out of a number of proven broodmares. A full sibling to 2015 sale topper and stakes winning two year old, Norms Big Bucks, is on offer by Exhi out of Fabulous Brush. The Cobra King mare Fabulous Brush is a fabulous broodmare who has produced stakes winners Kingoftherockies ($155,447) and Queenoftheforest ($96,868) in addition to multiple stakes placed Points Alert ($115,539). The proven race mare and producer Golden Made ($372,225) has a filly by Street Boss on offer. Golden Made is the dam of seven winners including established Alberta runners Tell Me Lies ($273,650) and Centrefire ($99,017). The unraced mare Lemon Drop Martini has produced four winners from five foals to race including stakes winners Lemon Pepper ($129,805) and Victory Day ($55,402). HIGHFIELD INVESTMENT GROUP INC., AGENT As agent, Highfield has a further five yearlings available by the sires Gottcha Gold, Cause to Believe, Fort Larned, Line of David and Schramsberg. The Schramsberg filly is the second foal out of the race mare Crafty Critter ($77,180) whose first foal is a two year old of 2016. Crafty Critter is a half-sister to the stakes winner Dubit ($206,440). The foals for the stakes winning sire Schramsberg are just three year olds of 2016. DAVID LOVLIE has five yearlings consigned by Teeman, Lost Canyon and Othello. Of particular note, the filly by the stakes placed Teeman is the first foal for the mare Ohthjewel, a half-sister to graded stakes winner Dean’s Kitten. A colt by stakes placed Othello, sire of Alberta runners Bubblegum Kid ($205,217) and Lady Lev ($151,304), is on offer out of the mare Summer Theatre. Summer Theatre is the dam of Dean’s Kitten ($802,950). SHELLEY LUPUL has three yearlings available by the sires Formal Gold and Imperialism. The stakes winner Imperialism ($899,772) is one of the leading sires in Canada and has sired 110 winners of 315 races with total progeny earnings of over $6 Million. The filly by Imperialism is the first foal for the dam, Come Home Quick ($82,380), a half-sister to stakes winner Steal A Heart ($569,341). The Formal Gold gelding is out of Urgent Appeal, a half-sister to multiple stakes placed runner Virginia Pride ($331,375).

ELAINE MACPHERSON and FURLONGS INC. has a filly by stakes winner Second In Command, a first time foal for the mare Red Head, a half-sister to stakes winner Roman Tiger ($472,848). The second filly in this consignment is by the stakes placed runner Numaany whose first foals are just two year olds of 2016. C.W. MATIER has two yearlings by the leading sire in B.C. and consistently top ten leading sire in Canada, Gottcha Gold. The gelding is out of the proven race mare Real Dilemma by Salt Lake ($146,959) who is the dam of sales stakes winner High Dollar Gal ($32,081). The filly is out of a Regal Remark mare, Regal Reilly, who is the dam of the winners Big Step ($27,241) and Cafeine Cowboy ($79,890). MOONSHINE MEADOW RANCH is offering three yearlings by the sires Heavenly Chorus, I Want Revenge, Silent Name and, as Agent, a yearling by Rocky Bar. This consignment offers an opportunity to purchase the yearlings for up and coming sires as the first foals for the stakes placed runner Heavenly Chorus are two year olds of 2016 and the first foals for the stakes winner I Want Revenge are just yearlings of 2016. The colt by stakes winner Silent Name is out of the winning race mare Gentle Angel ($73,672). The colt by stakes winner Rocky Bar is out of a dam who is a half-sister to stakes placed runner Remind Mee ($89,580). LORNE NYSTEAD has consigned five yearlings by the stakes placed sire Teeman who has sired winners of 10 races and earnings of $116,000. These yearlings are out of a notable group of dams including Splendid Susan, a full sister to stakes winner Del Mar Danny ($290,665); Cuvecious ($48,104) by Cuvee who was a winner at 3; and Jewel of the Year ($156,572) dam of 2 winners including Jewels Prayerwheel ($21,057). PARKHAVEN STABLES has brought in a colt by stakes placed winner and proven sire The Trader’s Echo who has sired winners of 70 races and earnings of over $1.2 Million. This colt is out of the Desperately mare, Meadows Park. PAT MURPHY has two yearling geldings consigned by Wilko out of proven Alberta bred stakes winning dams, R Lucinda and Bodgits Lady. Multiple stakes winner R Lucinda was a 2003 CTHS Sale graduate bred by James Murphy. This Weekend Guest mare went on to race for six seasons and earned $227,492 in her career. This is the first foal for Highfield bred Bodgits Lady who earned over $90,000 in a career that included a win in the Princess Margaret Stakes. PEACEFUL VALLEY FARMS has three yearlings available by the stakes winner Best of the Bests (IRE), sire of winners of 341 races and progeny earnings of over $6 Million. A filly is also on offer in this consignment by stakes winner Alydeed, sire of 310 winners of over $20 Million. ROCKY RIDGE FARMS LTD. has two yearlings on offer by the proven stallion Wilko, sire of 85 winners including 5 stakes winners and progeny earnings of over $5 Million. This consignment offers an exciting opportunity to purchase the first foal out of the multiple stakes winning Tiger Trap mare, Regal Tigereyes ($124,689). A filly out of the Honour and Glory mare, Winners Reward, is also available in this consignment. ED ROUGEAU, Agent for Diane Magdalin has two yearlings available by the sires Gottcha Gold and Storm Victory. Gottcha Gold is the leading sire in B.C. and consistently in the top ten in Canada. Storm Victory is the sire of 11 stakes winners and progeny earnings of over $3.7 Million. The Storm Victory gelding available is out of the stakes winning mare Sassy Chimes ($113,580) who has already produced three winners including the stakes winner Call Me George ($444,121).

RUNNING FAWCETT THOROUGHBREDS has four yearlings on offer by Silent Name, Alydeed and Cape Canaveral. The Alydeed yearling is out of the proven broodmare Crystal Forest who has produced the multiple stakes winners Canaveral Leader ($230,831), My Daddy’s Girl ($100,230), Captains Echo ($39,441) and stakes placed Feetdontfaillmenow ($31,504). The filly by the Sunday Silence stallion Silent Name is out of the mare Just Awesome, half-sister to Champion Macho Uno and Canadian Hall of Fame stallion Awesome Again. The Bests of the Bests (IRE) filly is the second foal for Marked Treasure has produced Arctic Treasure, placed in 2 starts at 2 in 2016. The Alydeed filly is out of a Pulpit mare, Preacher Girl. Stone Ranches and Lianne Knechtel also have a filly by stakes winner Max Forever out of the proven race mare Malakwa ($76,314).
