Why recognition matters • It satisfies a basic human need • It’s a motivator! • It’s an emotional difference maker • It’s the right thing to do • It’s how we KEEP volunteers!
Types of recognition • Intrinsic (less tangible) • Pride of accomplishment from a kind word • Self satisfaction of a job well done being highlighted
• Extrinsic (tangible) • • • •

How do we stack up? • Are we doing a good job of recognizing our volunteers? • ARHA Volunteer Engagement Survey • Constructed by members of the Volunteer Directors Committee in collaboration with the ARHA. • Measured six different criteria for 7 Akron area hospitals. • • • • • •
Volunteer Experience/Engagement Hospital Staff Engagement Hospital Perception/Patient Satisfaction Perception Volunteer Program Management & Staff Assignment Development Ideas, Design & Training Volunteer Benefits
Survey specifics • Questions relevant to recognition: • I am satisfied with the recognition I receive for completing volunteer service. • I know when I have provided good service. • The annual volunteer recognition event makes me feel appreciated. • Volunteering at this organization is a personally rewarding experience. • The benefits this organization provides are sufficient to make me feel appreciated (i.e. flu shot, appreciation event, birthday cards, etc.)
• Now we know how we stack up.
Recognition • One size does NOT fit all. • Your volunteers are unique. • Humans are motivated by different types of recognition
