Dear Members,

CHANGING EXHIBITS

As we head into the fall and early winter of another year, I look back on the first eight months of 2016 with pride and delight in our Museum and gratitude towards you, our Members. We opened our new exhibit, Leisure and Luxury in the Age of Nero: The Villas of Oplontis Near Pompeii with enthusiastic support from you and the community. Our Living History Farm is seeing double digit growth in a record number of visitors.

SPECIAL PROGRAMMING TAYLOR PLANETARIUM LIVING HISTORY FARM EVENTS LECTURES MSU STUDENTS BREWS & THE BIG SKY KIDS’ PROGRAMS IMPACT

The overwhelming popularity of our summer camps, lectures, docent led tours, and planetarium shows is the result of the effort and energy our staff and volunteers put into providing valuable curriculum, programming, and services to our guests. Construction on the Curatorial Center for the Humanities is well underway and we will be moving our collections into it next year. On Saturday, July 9th, a sold out crowd of 400 packed the big tent in the MOR parking lot to celebrate ‘Earthly Delights’ at our 15th Annual Wine & Culinary Classic Benefit Event. It was a resounding success with heartfelt thanks to our sponsors, donors, and guests! We recently published our Coming Soon exhibits list. You will find this online or towards the back of this Calendar. This February, we will welcome CROCS: Ancient Predators in a Modern World. Until then, continue to enjoy Leisure and Luxury in the Age of Nero: The Villas of Oplontis Near Pompeii, an abundance of special programs, lectures, and a new show in the planetarium. Sincerely,

Sheldon McKamey Executive Director

CHANGING EXHIBITS Leisure & Luxury in the Age of Nero

The Villas of Oplontis Near Pompeii Now – Saturday, December 31, 2016 More than 2,000 years ago, many of Rome’s wealthiest citizens lived and played on the shores of the Bay of Naples at Pompeii and in luxury villas nearby at Oplontis. One of the most opulent of these villas was rumored to be the summer home of Emperor Nero’s second wife, Poppaea. In 79 AD, falling ash and pyroclastic flows from Mount Vesuvius’ catastrophic eruption buried dining rooms that had once seated more than a hundred people, private chambers adorned with spectacular frescos, and marble columns resting on mosaic floors. Preserved next door were wine and oil-filled amphorae, a strongbox with coins, and people hiding in a barrel-vaulted storage room, waiting for a rescue that never came. Dr. Regina Gee, Associate Professor of Art History at Montana State University and Adjunct Curator of Art History at MOR, is an expert on frescos and one of three researchers working on the archaeological excavation of Oplontis. Not long ago, she and her research colleagues received permission from the Superintenza to organize an exhibit of artifacts from the site to travel to the United States. Now Museum of the Rockies is one of only three museums in the U.S. to host this stirring exhibit of antiquities that have never left Italy before. Join us, and experience for yourself the artifacts of leisure and luxury that are all that remain of Oplontis! Presented by:

IMPACT

Dear Museum of the Rockies Members, Whether you’re marveling at a towering T. Rex, traveling back in time at our Living History Farm, or learning about space travel from a planetarium show, we sincerely hope that you feel a sense of wonder when you walk through our doors. We also want you to feel that you belong here, and that your generosity is critical for our success. Museum of the Rockies is a local, non-profit organization and we rely on planned giving to carry out our programs. We could not host our exhibits or offer programs like childrens’ summer camp without contributions from caring people. People who are committed to life-long learning. People who value community. People like you! Every gift makes a difference, whether large or small. You’ve already helped by becoming a member, but what about our program called “Give the Gift” on behalf of a family member, friend, or business partner? Generous individuals and local businesses can sponsor our museum events, earn valuable visibility, and directly benefit everyone who visits. Our biggest annual fundraiser, the Wine and Culinary Classic, returns next July after our sold-out 2016 evening. We’re already looking for individuals and businesses to sponsor and would love to hear from you. I’m always available to discuss ways that we can work together to make a difference in our community through Museum of the Rockies. I’m easy to reach at 406.994.4973 or [email protected]. Please know how much everyone at MOR appreciates your kindness. With Warmest Regards,

Kathryn Hohmann Director of Philanthropy
