SIX FRESHMEN ADDED TO 2015 ROSTER • Cristiana Behnken, Hannah Bricker, Courtney Coffey, Mary DeWalt, Leah Swander and Claire Schrier will look to be the added difference to get the Pioneers back to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the last four seasons. • Behnken, a defender, was a three-time All-Utah selection, including earning honorable mention honors as a freshman after scoring seven goals in the campaign. • Bricker, who joined the Pioneers for their 2015 spring season, was a four-year member of the Colorado Olympic Development Program. • Coffey, another Colorado native, led her high school team in scoring in 2012 (also led in assists) and 2014, finishing as an all-conference selection both seasons. • DeWalt, a four-sport high school athlete was named to her All-Area team, and won the Golden Boot award and earned first-team all-conference honors. • Swander, a Grand Junction product, spent two seasons with the U.S. Youth Academy, and scored the most goals of any 5A freshman in Colorado in 2012. • Schrier was a four-year letterwinner at Cherry Creek High School, and played 10 seasons of club soccer in the state, most recently for the Colorado Storm. SET PIECE SPECIALIST • Senior Stella Norman had the Pioneers’ first two goals of 2015, knocking in both off free kicks. OH CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN • The Pioneers are captained by redshirt junior Francesca Garzelloni, who enters this match with the program on 56 CAPS, starting 53 of the matches. • As a freshman in 2012, Garzelloni started the side’s first four matches before missing the rest of the season with an injury (foot). • Garzelloni leads the 2015 roster in career goals with 10 to go along with five assists for a team-leading 25 points. CLUB SIDE CAMARADERIE • The Pioneers 2015 roster has players from 15 different club teams. • Real Colorado leads the way in numbers, including freshman Hannah Bricker, sophomore Riley Welch, senior Stella Norman and Garzelloni. • Denver also has a pair of players from Black Diamond Soccer Club (Utah), Colorado Rush, Colorado Storm, East Side FC (Wash.) and La Roca Premier (Utah). FOUR YEAR CYCLE • Denver has tallied a 48-24-8 record since the beginning of the 2012 campaign, and had the 21st-best winning-percentage in the nation entering the season. • Taylor Ivins is the only four-year player at Denver on the Pioneers’ 2015 roster, making 27 starts in her 76 CAPS. • Stella Norman transferred into the program in 2014, making 13 appearances around an injury suffered during the season. In her career, Norman has earned 68 CAPS, including 40 at Stony Brook. • Denver’s 2014 senior class finished 61-18-7, the 13th-best output in the nation. EXPERIENCED JUNIORS • Experienced juniors in Brooke Boothe, Tori Divita, Karina Fredette, Garzelloni, Lilly McSwain and netminder Cassidy Rey combine for 236 CAPS and 161 starts, the most of any class on this year’s roster. • Second to Garzelloni’s 57 CAPS, Boothe has 54, including 47 starts in the defensive midfield for Jeff Hooker’s side. • Boothe has seven goals and two assists in her first three seasons with the Pioneers.

Success continues for the women’s soccer program under the direction of head coach Jeff Hooker. His presence at Denver serves as a symbol of commitment to the University’s goal of joining the national elite. Hooker became the third head coach in the program’s history, taking over the reins in 1992. He recently concluded his 23rd season, coaching his 500th career match last October. The Pioneers have achieved greatness under Hooker’s watch with at least eight wins in all of his 23 seasons, including 13 or more wins in seven of the last eight seasons. Since 2006, the Pioneers have gone 148-37-16 (.763) overall and 76-10-5 (.853) in the conference play, while becoming the first team in history to win fourstraight SBC Tournament titles and berths in the NCAA Tournament. Hooker’s teams compiled a school-record 19 wins in 2006, 2008 and 2010. In his 23rd campaign with the program, and Denver’s second season in the Summit League, a young Pioneer squad finished 10-8-2 and 5-3-0 in the Summit League. The 10 wins extended Hooker’s double-digit streak to nine-consecutive seasons. Denver’s season concluded in similar heartbreak to the 2010 campaign, as the Pioneers dropped a penalty shootout in the Summit League Championship to South Dakota State. In their first season in The Summit League, the Pioneers swept the regular season and tournament titles, winning all nine matches against conference opposition. Hooker was named co-coach of the year in the conference, his 10th coaching honor. For the second season in a row, CIBER Field hosted a first round NCAA Tournament contest, a match Denver dropped 1-0. The 2012 Pioneers not only reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009, but advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 for the first time in program history. Hooker was named the Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, leading the program to a 17-3-4 overall record and a 6-2-0 mark in the WAC. Kristen Hamilton was named the WAC Player of the Year and was joined by six other Pioneers on WAC

all-conference teams in 2012. Denver hosted its first NCAA Tournament game in first season, earning a 3-1 result over Colorado College in the NCAA First Round. The Pioneers followed that up with a trip to Stanford, Calif., where DU erased a two-goal deficit to upset No. 4 Maryland 3-2 in extra time. Kaitlin Bast became the third player in program history to join the 100-point club in that NCAA Tournament win over Colorado College. Bast finished her career with 104 points. Between 2001-03, Hooker’s teams won threestraight SBC Tournament titles and trips to the NCAA Tournament, while compiling a 51-9-4 (.828) record. Additionally, the Pioneers captured back-to-back SBC regular season titles in 2002-03. Hooker was rewarded for his efforts by being named the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year in 2001, 2002, 2006, 2008 and 2010 to compliment his accolades as the CAC Coach of the Year in 1994 and 1995, and the Great Plains Region Coach of the Year in 1995. In addition to his responsibilities with the women’s program, Hooker headed the men’s soccer team during the 1996 and 1997 seasons with an overall mark of 20-12-4. A native of Walnut, Calif., Hooker was revered as one of the finest prep players in the nation and was selected to the Junior National Team in 1983. When the team toured Mexico, Hooker started at striker, scoring in his first-ever international contest in the Youth World Cup. His collegiate playing career at UCLA was limited because of national team commitments in the under-19 World Cup, but he was able to play 51 games during his three-year stint with the Bruins, recording 20 goals and 11 assists. Hooker was also a member of the 1984 Olympic soccer team and remained a prominent member of the U.S. National Team through 1987. Following Hooker’s collegiate playing days, he joined the Colorado Foxes men’s professional team from 19911995. During his time as a pro, the Foxes won back-toback A-League championships in 1992 and 1993.

DENVER WINS THIRD STRAIGHT PIONEERS DEFEAT IUPUI 1-0 AT CIBER FIELD DENVER – Junior Karina Fredette (Gatineau, Quebec) scored for the third time in the last five matches, including her second-straight game-winner to lead the University of Denver women’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over IUPUI on Sunday afternoon at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. Following the match, Denver honored seniors Taylor Ivins (West Haven, Utah), Stella Norman (Lakewood, Colo.) and Tina Vargas (Issaquah, Wash.) and redshirt-junior Francesca Garzelloni (Parker, Colo.) following the match in Denver’s home finale. The two squads, both in need of a win in the Summit League standings on Sunday, played to a scoreless first half, with Denver holding a 7-5 edge in shots in the opening frame. Norman had the best chance for the Pioneers in the 24th minute, rattling the crossbar from 25 yards out. Denver found the breakthrough in the 72nd minute as Fredette beat screened goalkeeper Catherine Schmidt into the left side netting from 15 yards out. Norman started the scoring chance with a free kick from midfield. Fredette won the initial header, which fell to the feet of sophomore Riley Welch (Littleton, Colo.), who laid it off back to Fredette for the game-winner. DU finished the match with a 12-9 edge in shots, and took seven of the match’s eight corner kicks. Junior Cassidy Rey (Arcadia, Calif.) made four saves for the Pioneers, two in each stanza. With the win, the Pioneers moved to fifth in the standings, three points behind fourth-place South Dakota and four points behind third-place South Dakota State.

Official's signature

WAIPAHU, Hawai’i - The University of Denver women’s soccer team shared the spoils with Wyoming on Saturday night as the two teams played to a scoreless draw at Waipi’o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. “I’m happy about our defensive performance out there tonight,” head coach Jeff Hooker said. “I thought we had some great moments offensively before Leah (Swander) got hurt. Leah and Mary (DeWalt) linked up well in the first half. Lauren (Conley) did her job coming off the bench, creating chances, but I just thought overall as a team, we weren’t sharp in the final third.”

WAIPAHU, Hawai’i – The University of Denver women’s soccer team fell to hosts Hawai’i 1-0 in extra time on Monday night at the Waipi’o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. “The result won’t show it, but I thought we were really good out there today,” head coach Jeff Hooker said. “We were night and day different from Saturday with our ability to keep the ball, create chances and control the midfield. With that said, we need to focus on our final pass and finishing in the final third as we prepare for two matches in California this weekend.”
