6 Rockaway Times - Summer & Community Guide

A NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER

T

It's Been Some Year.

he Rockaway Times launched June 26, 2014 and now proudly introduces its first annual Rockaway Summer/ Community Guide, a special supplement to our weekly paper. For those of us lucky enough to live here, we know Rockaway is a one-of-a-kind place, surrounded by water, buttressed by the spirit of its people. People here are funny and smart and were resilient long before it became a catchy word. The guide should provide handy information and highlight and call attention to the many services, great businesses and organizations here. The Rockaway Times joined with Vince Catalanotto, who operates a terrific blog, under the name Rockawayist, to bring this special edition to fruition. Vince is a lifelong resident of Queens and has lived in Rockaway since graduating college. Of course, this is the kind of endeavor that calls upon the talents and efforts of many. We got cool photographs and great write-ups by locals; our sales team led by Fred Marino got the word out. Mike Bologna, Vice President of Operations at

Richner Communications, the company that does so much for us, put aside much of his usual responsibilities, to work seven days a week on this guide. We’ve gotten lucky twice now: Mike’s the guy who designed much of our award-winning Sandy edition. It’s been a team effort. So, from all of us, we hope you enjoy our inaugural Summer Guide edition and feel compelled to hang on to it. We think it’s a keeper! We also hope you’ll continue to support our free weekly paper, widely available throughout Rockaway and online. It’s free because our awesome advertisers believe in us. Please tell them you saw their ad in The Rockaway Times (and especially in this guide). And lastly, we thank YOU, our readers. You’ve been there the whole time and inspired us to do better and do more. In short, this guide was inspired you!

ROCKAPULCO - SURF'S UP

R

It’s True: Surf’s Up.Way Up.

ockaway is home to the only official surfing beach in New York City, and probably the only surfing beach in the world accessible by subway. If you want to catch a wave, or need any beach related gear, there are a number of great surf shops and schools: Boarders Surf Shop is owned and operated by a father-son team of local surfers. The shop carries a wide selection of bathing suits, wetsuits, surfboards as well as skateboards. They also offer locker, board and wetsuit rental, in addition to showers, bathrooms and changing rooms. Location: 192 Beach 92nd Street, 718 318 7997. Breakwater Surf Co. also offers daily board and wetsuit rentals. In addition to a full selection of bathing suits and flip-flops, they have a wide variety of skate-influenced clothing and footwear. Location: 67-20 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, 347 619 8376. Rockaway Beach Surf Shop has been open for over 40 years, and claims to be the oldest surf shop in New York City. In addition to the usual beach, surf and paddle

gear, this family owned store boasts a stock of over 2,000 Rockaway-themed t-shirts. Location: 177 Beach 116th Street, 718 474 9345. The Breezy Point Surf Shop serves the western end of the peninsula. With the usual assortment of beach gear, surf and skate boards, the shop also has a full selection of beach chairs. Location: 61 Point Breeze Avenue, 718 318 2381. If you need a little guidance on the ocean waves, there are some great surf schools in the area. Skudin Surf (855 433 3350), New York Surf School (718 496 3371), and Locals Surf School (347 752 2728) are all located on the ocean at Beach 67th Street, and offer a host of private and group lessons year-round. Standup paddle boarding is growing in popularity, and now Rockaway has the only shop in the greater New York area devoted specifically to that sport. A-Team Paddleboarding is now open at 114-04 Beach Channel Drive (718 945 0300). The owners also offer lessons on both the ocean and the bay.

At the time in the 1990s there were several regular direct flights from Berlin to JFK. Approaching New York by air, this route mostly made me see the Rockaways first, as the first land and outpost of the Big Apple. Sometimes we would fly in over marshes and wetlands from the east, sometimes over the ocean directly crossing the very narrow strip of land, the Rockaway peninsula from the south. Sometimes I would see the high rises of coops and projects right Continued on page 53

BOYLEING POINTS SUMMER GUIDE TO LINGO:

Rock Is Spoken Here

D

BY KEVIN BOYLE

o you speak Rock? If you want to honor the hometown roots or pass as a local now’s a good time to brush up on the language spoken here in Rockapulco. If you don’t know what a DFD is, you’re probably a DFD. DFD is the first code word of Rockaway. I don’t mean to insult everyone who already knows what it is but some people live under a rock, never mind speak it. Anyway, if you’re here for the day, you’re a DFD as in Down For the Day. It’s not necessarily pejorative. If you own up to it you might get a local to nod in a nice way. But if you leave any garbage, or look sideways at residents, you’re a bad DFD. Don’t be a bad DFD. Some people realize the best time of day is when the sun softens and the crowds wane. They decide to stay for the week. They’re DFWs, Down For the Week. Others come here and have a revelation. What am I doing? I could live here. They’re the smart ones. They’re DFGs. Down For Good. Once you get sand in your shoes (Rockaway is in your blood) you learn that a lot of people here live on Rockaway Time. That means last-minute or just plain late. The accepted excuse for tardiness is you got stuck enjoying the beach. Neck ties confuse people. The Rockaway Tuxedo, a blue shirt and khakis, is about as formal as it gets. Rockaway is in Queens as much as Brooklyn wants to own it. But we don’t fully embrace the whole Queens thing either. When we leave the peninsula we go to Queens, which is the mainland. It’s not used much any more, but you get points for knowing Rockaway is, or at least was, the Irish Riviera. Rock is spoken downtown and uptown (that’s east and west). Of course, getting to Rockaway is the price of paradise. And a lot of times that means taking the dear old A Train, not-so affectionately known as The Animal. As in, I gotta take The Animal. I got a job in The City, I’ll be riding The Animal. On your way to an advanced degree in Rockology you’ll learn some people used to call it Rotaway when it seemed the place was on a slow and steady oneway trip to oblivion. But we’re on a big, big upswing so that one’s not used so much anymore. A new one has just been introduced though: The Rockaway Groan. That’s when you’re invited to somewhere off the peninsula in the summer months. I gotta leave Rockaway to go sit in somebody’s backyard? I gotta leave for what? Groan. Anyway, no guide is complete without stating an essential truth: there’s three sides to every story: the right way, the wrong way, and the Rockaway.

MADE IN ROCKAWAY

Locals Lead the Renaissance

R

ockaway residents have a long history of self-resolve and resourcefulness. Through floods, fires, urban neglect and other disasters, this community has always banded together to get things done while others were paralyzed by fear or indecision. The Tubridy family of Rockaway and Broad Channel embody that spirit. Long active in civic and education endeavors, Dan Tubridy presided over the old Pier 92 like a “clubhouse, where he and his semiretired friends would get together every day and solve the world’s problems,” according to Dan’s sons Dee and Terence. But that clubhouse provided valuable work experience for a generation of local youngsters. In 2009, Dee and Terence took over Pier 92 and rechristened it the Bungalow Bar. It was right at the beginning of the “Rockaway renaissance.” They set out to appeal to their own generation: residents in their mid-20s, who were coming back to the neighborhood and raising their families. “We were going to do only a summer place, but to help build the name of the restaurant, and for the employees we took on, we decided to keep it open through the winter.” At the same time, Dee and Terence were busy building their Manhattan franchises. The brothers are now partners of In Good Company Hospitality, which operates bars such as Libation, Park Avenue Tavern, and

Refinery Rooftop. They are also acting as advisers for the St. Cloud, a rooftop bar in the storied Knickerbocker Hotel. Terence laughed amiably when asked what it feels like to follow in the footsteps of John Jacob Astor. Their Manhattan successes aside, the brothers are still committed to Rockaway. They announced plans in early 2015 to develop the Rockaway Beach Hotel on a parcel of land already owned by the family. While still in the design and zoning phase, the hotel would be open year-round and would evoke “the old Rockaway, the Riviera.” Like many residents, their biggest concern is transportation and access to Jamaica Bay. “The city has to come on-board, transportation wise. This is a huge undertaking for us. We’re laying it all on the line, without any backing from the city. But we’re not going to wait for the city.” The brothers are pleased to see how the community has turned around over the past several years. “It’s Irish hospitality. We should be welcoming anyone who comes down with open arms. We share Rockaway with the world.” The best thing about living in Rockaway, according to Terence, is watching the youth of the community grow up and prosper. “If they have the work ethic to make it through the summer working at Bungalow Bar, they’ll probably come back next summer.”

SUMMER CLASSIC

Basketball: A Classic Tradition

T

he St. Francis S u m m e r Classic will begin its 31st season of play this year. It was established in 1985 as a way to organize the flourishing informal pickup basketball scene in Rockaway. It is a program of St. Francis de Sales Parish that also accommodates interested players from elsewhere on the peninsula and the tri-state area on a space- available basis. The Classic is made up of 12 divisions and generally runs from late June through late August, and includes 12 divisions for children who have completed 2nd grade all the way through men’s and women’s open divisions, as well as the associated Graybeard Basketball League. Games are scheduled Monday through Friday in St. Francis’ Father Grogan Memorial Schoolyard and St. Francis De Sales gym, with three games each night on each court, beginning at 5:45. The first Summer Classic included the Men’s Open division with 12 teams, Boys and Girls High school divisions, and a Boys Grammar School division for grades 5-8. The facilities were upgraded with repaving, lighting, new fencing and additional courts thanks to Al DeMatteis and the DeMatteis Corporation, and John ‘Red’ Cleary. Many of today’s coaches and commissioners began as

players 30 years ago. Divisions would be added for Grammar School Girls, Women’s Open, younger grammar school ages, and older players through the Graybeard division which would spawn the creation of the Graybeards organization following 9-11. The quality of the Summer Classic organization, the facility, the atmosphere and support, and the level of play and of officials, quickly made the Summer Classic one of the most popular and sought after summer leagues in New York City and the surrounding areas. It became an integral part of the community fabric, providing all a place to come together, after a day at work or at the beach. When Sandy made landfall in 2012, the Fr. Grogan Schoolyard served both immediate and surrounding community, providing relief. Afterwards, the attention was turned to reconstruct the severely damaged facility. Resette Restaurant, Friends of Sean Lugano, and the Rockefeller Foundation came to the rescue with critical funding, assisting the tremendous effort of the parish and the Diocese of Brooklyn. The Schoolyard was rebuilt through the early summer of 2013 and is better than ever. Although Sandy delayed the start of the 2013 Classic, it could not stop it and in 2014 the Summer Classic celebrated its 30th season. At the heart of the Summer Classic has been an incredible army of volunteers including directors, commissioners, coaches, security, and first aid staff. It is impossible to mention every individual that helps make the Classic such a huge success which is indicative of the strong connection of the Summer Classic to the community. Read The Rockaway Times for registration information for the 2015 St. Francis Summer Classic.

THE ARTS

T

Homegrown Art

he communities of Rockaway have long served as both an inspiration and a canvas for artists of many disciplines. Based in Fort Tilden, the Rockaway Artists Alliance is a not-for-profit organization comprised of individuals who view the arts as vital to the health of our community. Formed in 1994, their mission is to encourage and engage residents of Rockaway in the arts and cultural activities. As a community based organization, they provide lectures, presentations, exhibitions and special events. RAA hosts exhibitions that explore the wide span of the arts and creative endeavor. Sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, filmmaking, performance art, digital art, construction, ceramics, poetry and literature are just some of the many areas presented. The performing arts in all their variety -- music, dance, spoken word and more -- are also featured through special RAA sponsored events and celebratory show openings, either

within the galleries themselves or on the adjacent outdoor Moonstage. RAA facilities are ADA compliant and accessible to individuals with disabilities. OFFICE:

THE ROCKAWAY BEACH

Volleyball Is A Spectacle

R

ockaway Beach has become New York City’s training ground for the city's best volleyball players thanks to the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League. Riis Park is a site to behold, every Wednesday night during the summer as over a thousand beach loving “athletes” of every size, gender and age come together making every Wednesday the social event of the summer. With 76 teams playing coed six player beach volleyball, the guys and girls mix it up on and off the court as only Rockaway can. Started in 1989 with two nets and four teams made up of a bunch of friends getting together, the league has grown into the college recruiting breeding ground that it is today. Rockaway has always been known for

its great basketball and swimming teams, but as the decades went by with the parents now playing beach volleyball, a generation of kids grew up around the game. The high school city and state championship teams are usually sprinkled with Rockaway kids who have been bumping, setting and spiking since they could walk. Many Rockaway kids through the years have played college ball throughout the country in Division I, II, and III. The league is comprised of nine divisions so whether you are an overweight grandpa or a future Division 1 college athlete, there is a league for you. The game brings families together. Many teams start out as family affairs, with parents and their young

sweatshirt around town and earn a new level of respect from their neighbors. The first night of play is May 20th, which is practice night when players gather to get their uniforms, set up the net and get the rust off those old bones. The games count for real starting May 27th and continue every Wednesday until August 5th. The playoffs are on Saturday August 8th starting at 10 am. If you have never been to the playoffs you should put it on your calendar, it is a fun filled day with music, food, and great competition as the players fight it out for six hours of volleyball at its best. The Rockaway Beach Volleyball League is a nonprofit organization. To run a league of this size takes a lot of hard work. It is run by a committee of eight people who volunteer their time and limited skills to organizing the league. Check out RBVL.com to learn more.

high school kids playing together. Until the kids pass the parents' skill level and move on to form teams of their own with their peers and move up through the better divisions. Lifelong friends form teams and share laughs, memories, and the bond that only sports can provide. Each week one of Rockaway’s local bars sponsor the week and after the last net is taken down the players head there for a free buffet and some cordials as they talk about the night's action. It is not all fun and merriment though, because after all, it is sport. While the games are played between friends and neighbors in a good natured atmosphere, as Vince Lombardi said, “winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.” Nobody likes to lose, and the most coveted prize in Rockaway, is to win the championship sweatshirt at the end of the year. dgemere Farm is a half-acre urban farm located at 385 Beach 45th Street in Arverne. Founded in 2013, the then-vacant lot was transformed into a lush and productive space, where a wide variety of fresh and organically grown vegetables, fruits and herbs are cultivated. The farm serves as an incubator for aspiring food producers and market gardeners, and is home to many other independent projects. In addition to vegetable and fruit cultivation, the farm hosts an apiary, egg-laying chickens, and a dye and herb garden. There is also an on-site classroom for mentoring community members interested in local food production. The farm is a self-sustaining enterprise and acts as a zero-profit business. All proceeds are reinvested into the farm for future projects and operation costs. Photo by Bianca Fortis

Skincare Tips for the Summer By Asma Ahmed, DO Dermatology Resident*, St. John’s Episcopal Hospital New Yorkers love to spend their time outdoors during the summer after wearing thick layers and coats for months. However, with shorts, sandals, and bathing suits comes the dangers of overexposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays. Taking preventive measures by taking care of your skin will not only protect you from the sun’s known effects in causing skin cancer, but also prevent general signs of aging, such as wrinkles, freckles, and uneven pigmentation. The proven way to protect your skin is to wear a sunscreen with both UVA and UVB blocking properties every single day, and to reapply often.

Understanding how to read sunscreen labels can help you find the right product for your needs. Sunscreens that have “broad spectrum” and “water resistant” on their labels are recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology. If the sunscreen offers water resistance, you will see “40 minutes” or “80 minutes” after the words “water resistant.” This tells you how long your skin can be wet or sweaty before you need to reapply. The word “sunblock” is no longer being used since it is considered misleading, and manufacturers are required to use the word “sunscreen” on the label.

From creams, wipes, powders, to sticks, sunscreens come in so many different formulations these days; there really is no excuse not to use one. For those who are prone to acne breakouts, look for products that are oil-free and noncomedogenic. Sprays are convenient because they can be applied in seconds, but just remember to apply a thick coat to get full coverage. Also, consider applying an antioxidant serum that has ingredients such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E, or green tea before applying sunscreen to help fight free radicals and boost sun protection. Clothing, including broad rim hats, also provide protection from the sun. Dark and bright colors give the most protection. If the fabric is thin and can be seen through, then UV rays are penetrable as well. Avoid sun exposure between 10am and 2pm when the sun’s UV rays are the most intense.

Without proper sun protection, you may get a burn that can become red and painful. The first thing you should do is move indoors if possible, or to a shaded area. Apply a cool, damp towel several times daily for about ten minutes or take frequent cool showers to help soothe skin. Moisturizers that contain aloe vera or soy help reduce discomfort. If very uncomfortable, ibuprofen, aspirin, and topical hydrocortisone may help decrease inflammation. Just one blistering sunburn doubles your risk of melanoma, so it is important to monitor your skin yourself or by a dermatologist for any skin changes. *St. John’s is a teaching hospital preparing 180 residents per year to become doctors. ADVERTORIAL

AFTER SANDY HIT THE ROCKAWAYS THIS CAR DEALER WAS LIKE A ROCK.

he reports started to come in. Seagirt Blvd. and Beach 28th St. were already under 3 feet of water. Tribute Park was being battered. Beach Channel Drive was completely flooded. Unfortunately, this was one time the weatherman had got it right. Sandy would be the Storm of the Century. And no area and no town would get hit harder than the Rockaways. Homes were lost and cars were lostover 180,000 of them on the Island alone.

In the words of Vice Pres., Mike Ianelli- We couldnt re-build the homes but we could certainly do something about the cars. So we really sharpened our pencils and were able to lease folks automobiles below what we normally could have gotten for them.
