2015  HOPE  VALLEY  FARMS  FAMILY  TRIATHLON   Information  Guide   Sunday, September 13th, 2015 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. Race Start Time: promptly at 10:30 a.m. (Everyone MUST be set up, ready, and totally out of transition area by 10:00 a.m.)

 

We   are  so   excited   that  you   have   chosen  to  be  a   part   of  the  2015   Hope  Valley  Farms  YMCA  Family  Triathlon!   We  hope  that  this  will   be  an  event  where  you  can  have  fun,  be  active,  and  learn  more   about  how  the   Durham   YMCAs   impact   the   Durham   community.   This   information   packet   will   help   answer   your   questions   about   race   day.  Here  are  some  important  dates:     o Sept   11th:   Packet  pick  up  night.  5:30  to  7:30   o Sept    1 3th:  RACE    D AY  

                               

    Volunteering:  What  better  way  to  support  your  friends  and  family  during  the  Tri  than  volunteering  to  help   make  it  all  possible.  If  you  or  your  family  are  interested  in  volunteering  please  contact   [email protected]  We  need  help  setting  up,  at  water   stations,  stuffing  packets,  taking  pictures,   etc…  We  have  a  place  for  everyone.    Help  make  the  Tri  a  special  experience  for  your  family.

MANDATORY  PACKET  PICKUP  NIGHT,  SEPTEMBER  11   Packet  pickup  night  will  be  on  September  11  from  5:30  to  7:30  in  the  group  exercise   room  at  the  Hope  Valley   Farms  YMCA.    During  this  time  you  will  pick  up  your  race   number  and  packet.    We  will  be  able  to  answer  any  questions  and  review  the   transition  area.   You  will  also  have  a  chance  to  learn  more  about  the  YMCAs  annual   campaign  and  it  impact  on  the  Durham  community.    

RACE  DAY  INFORMATION  AND  FAQs   WHAT  IS  A  TRIATHLON?   If  you’ve  never  raced  in  or  watched  a  triathlon,  this  document  will  help  you  understand  what     you  (and  your  kids)  are  about  to  do  -­‐-­‐  and  it  will  help  you  explain  it  to  them!   Simply  stated,  it’s   fun!  A  triathlon  is  a  combination  of  swimming,  biking  and  running  –  in  this  order,  in  one  race.   We  are  keeping  it  simple  so  that  the  whole  family  can  easily  participate.   This  document  covers   all  the  details  you  need  to  know  about  each  of  those  segments  of  the  triathlon  (swim,  bike,       run)  as  well  as  everything  you  need  to  know  about  what  happens  when  you  get  there.  Please   read  through  this  carefully  and  review  it  with  your  kids  -­‐-­‐  it  will  help  make  them  feel   comfortable  about  the  total  course.    

 

 

 

 

 

Race  Day  Sunday  9/13   1. Arrive  at  HVF  on  Sunday  9/13  between  9am-­‐9:45am.   2. Wear  your  bathing  suit  underneath  your  clothes.     Wear  a  shirt  with  your  bib  #  pinned  on  it.   3. Circle  through  the  lower  parking  lot  level  to  check  in  and  set  up  your  transition   area.  (Transition  Area  will  CLOSE  at  10:00am)   4. Park  your  car  in  designated  parking  spaces  in  the  HVF  lot.    The  upper  lot  and  the  first   section  of  the  lower  lot  will  be  available  for  parking  on  site.   Overflow  Parking  is  on  Valley   Ridge  Dr.  (take  a  left  out  of  HVF  parking  lot,  and  it’s  your  first  road  on  the  left.   Please   do  not  block  driveways  or  fire  hydrants.)   5. Visit  the  Bicycle  Station  and  Info  Station.   6. Meet  at  the  flagpole  by  the  picnic  tables  in  “The  Pit”  at  10:15am.     (the  area  below  the   playground)     We  will  get  the  race  started  from  there.    The  advanced  group  will  go  first   followed  by  the  beginner  group.       WHEN  DO  I  GET  MY  RACE  NUMBER  AND  OTHER  RACE  MATERIALS?   We  give  those  out  at  Packet  Pick-­‐Up  on  Sept  11th  from  5:30  to  7:30.    You  will  get  your   number,  timing  chip,  and  course  info  during  this  time.    We  will  be  able  to  answer  any   questions  you  might  have  about  race  day.     NOTE:  You  must  pick-­‐up  your  race  packet  during  this  time.   WHAT  TIME  DO  I  NEED  TO  ARRIVE  ON  RACE  DAY?   Please  arrive  between  9am-­‐10am  on  race  day.     DO  NOT  BE  LATE  (remember,  you  need  time   to   park,  unload   your   bike   and   get   set-­‐up   in   the  transition   area   -­‐-­‐   so   plan   to  be   early!).   We   will   CLOSE   the   transition   area   at   10:00   am.      All   participants   will   meet   at   10:15   am   at   the   flagpole   (also   known  as  “The  Pit”   below  the  playground).   WHAT  IS  A  TRANSITION  AREA?   A  transition  area  is  where  your  bike,  helmet,  towel,  t-­‐shirt,  shorts,  running  shoes,  and  other   personal  belongings  are  kept  while  you  are  on  the  courses.  The  spaces  will  be  numbered,  and   your  bib  #  will  indicate  where  your  transition  area  is.   It  will  be  labeled  and  your  space   will  match   with  your  bib  #.   WHAT  IS  A  RACE  BIB?   A  race  bib  is  the  number  in  your  race  packet  that  you  attach  to  the  front  of  your  shirt  with  the  4   safety  pins,  which  are  also  in  your  race  packet.   Each  participant  has  a  number,  and  this  is  their   number  for  the  entire  race.   Your  timing  chip  and  your  transition  area  will  match  this  number 2015   H o p e   V a l l e y   F a r m s  Family   Triathlon

WHERE  DO  I  PARK?   There   will   be   a   designated   area   in   the   lower   parking   lot   for   parking.   The   upper   lot   will   also   be   available.   Once   these   2   lots   fill,   overflow   parking   is   in   the   neighborhood   that   is   directly   to   the   left   of   the   HVF   YMCA.   (Take   a   left   out   of   HVF,   take   your   first   left   onto   Valley   Ridge   Dr.,   and   you   can   parallel   park   along   either   side   of   this   road.   Please   do   not   block   any   driveways   or   fire   hydrants.   WILL  THERE  BE  RESULTS  AND  AWARDS?   Every  youth  participant  will  receive  a  Triathlon  Finisher  Medal  as  they  cross  the  finish  line.  In   addition,  we  will  award  both  medals  and  prizes  to  the  top  three  finishers  of  each  course.   Start   and  finish  times  will  be  posted  by  your  bib  #  in  a  document  emailed  after  the  race.   There  will  be   photos  taken  of  participants  as  they  cross  the  finish  line  and  the  link  to  view  these  photos  will   be  emailed  after  the  race.   HOW  WILL  THE  SWIM  BE  ORGANIZED?   The  advanced  course  participants  will  swim  first.   They  will  “snake”  through  all  8  lanes  of  the   pool,  totaling  200  yards,  then  head  to  the  transition  area  to  grab  their  bike.  As  the  advanced   participants  are  exiting  the  pool,  all  8  lanes  will  open  up,  and  each  family  will  be  directed  to  a   lane.   Families  will  take  turns  in  the  lanes  as  each  member  in  their  family  completes  the  50  yard   swim.   Kickboards,  noodles,  and  life  vests  may  all  be  worn.   WILL  THE  MAIN  ROADS  BE  BLOCKED  OFF?   There  will  be  cones  along  S.  Roxboro  St.  in  the  far  right  lanes  in  both  directions.   There  will  be   volunteers  at  the  intersection  of  Juliette  and  S.  Roxboro  St.  to  help  direct  traffic  and  ensure   safety.   Juliette  Rd.  has  a  bike  lane  that  we  will  use  for  the  bike  courses.   The  sidewalks  will  be   used  for  both  run  courses.   WHERE  ARE  THE  RESTROOMS  LOCATED?   The  lower  clubhouse  restrooms  will  be  open.   This  is  the  white  building  right  next  to  the  tennis   courts.   WHERE  ARE  THE  COURSES?   BEGINNER   Swim   50   yards   Swim  one  length  of  the  pool  down,  one  length  back   Bike     2     miles   Head  left  onto  S.  Roxboro  St.,  right  onto  Juliette,  turnaround  station  at   The  American  Tabacco  trail,  then  back  to  HVF   Run/Walk     1   mile   Head   right   onto   S.  Roxboro   St.  down  to   the  Third   Fork   Trail  entrance,   and   back  to   HVF   ADVANCED   Swim   200   yards   Swim  8  lengths  of  the  pool   Bike   6   miles   Head  left  onto  S.  Roxboro  St.,  right  onto  Juliette,  right  onto  American  Tobacco   trail,  turnaround  point  at  the  AT  Trail  intersection  by  Krogers,  then  back  to  HVF   Run/Walk     2.5    m iles   Head   right   onto   S.   Roxboro   St.  down   to   the   Third   Fork  Trail   entrance,   take   a   right   on   the   trail,   turnaround   at   water   station   then   back   to   HVF
