ABOUT THE INSTITUTION

G

eorgia College is Georgia's designated public liberal arts university, offering undergraduate programs of study in an inviting residential college setting to students who are motivated to make a difference in the world. Communitybased learning is a common theme at the university; and the students, faculty and staff members of Georgia College collaborate with the communities of middle Georgia to provide invaluable educational experiences for our students and make enriching contributions to the local area and beyond. The university also provides graduate and professional studies, in multiple locations and online, to students who are looking to advance their careers. Beginnings The school was founded in 1889 in Milledgeville, Ga., as a public women’s educational center. First known as Georgia Normal & Industrial College, the university also has been named Georgia State College for Women, the Women's College of Georgia, Georgia College and, since 1996, Georgia College & State University. Accreditation Georgia College & State University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral degrees. Contact the Commission on Colleges at 1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia, 30033-4097, or call 404679-4500 for questions about the accreditation of Georgia College & State University. Colleges Georgia College has programs of study in four colleges – the College of Arts and Sciences, the J. Whitney Bunting College of Business, the John H. Lounsbury College of Education and the College of Health Sciences. Class Sizes As Georgia’s designated public liberal arts university, small classes that give ample opportunity for individual student attention are common. Most class sections enroll between 15 and 35 students. Seminars, tutorials and honors courses typically enroll 20 to 25 students with three faculty facilitators. Total Economic Impact Locally The economic impact of the university on a six-county region is calculated to be more than $203 million, according to a study released in 2013 by the University System of Georgia. Tuition Fiscal Year 15-16 Tuition and fees for a full-time undergraduate student who is a resident of the state of Georgia are $4,585 per semester. Out-of-state tuition for full-time undergraduate students is $13,759 per semester. Compared to private liberal arts

universities of similar size, Georgia College offers a similar educational experience while being able to offer affordable tuition rates that are a fraction of the rates of those institutions. Financial Aid More than 80 percent of Georgia College students receive some form of financial assistance.

Mission and Values Mission As Georgia's public liberal arts university, GC offers undergraduate programs of study to talented and motivated students in a residential college setting. Georgia College also provides, at multiple locations, graduate and professional studies that support the needs of the region and create pathways to individual success and personal fulfillment. Through its teaching, research and service, Georgia College enriches the lives of students and their local and global communities. Value Statements Georgia College is committed to providing: An Expansive Undergraduate Educational Experience. Georgia College is committed to providing a residential liberal arts educational environment that invests in its students the extensive knowledge and strategic skills for them to thrive as productive citizens of a globally engaged democracy. Georgia College students experience multidisciplined intellectual encounters with both enduring and contemporary questions, intensive study in the major and capstone experiences that integrate and apply learning. Excellence in Graduate Education. Georgia College is committed to providing post-baccalaureate education that successfully prepares graduates for professional advancement, lifelong intellectual pursuits and informed participation in today’s complex society. In graduate and professional studies, the rigor, quality and relevance of our programs intentionally bridge the gap between theory and practice. Challenging, Innovative Teaching.
