SPEAKER BIOS BOYD BLACK Assistant Vice President Capital Project Delivery, The University of Chicago Under Boyd’s direction the Capital Project Delivery group manages design and construction for the University. He joined the University in 2008 after managing design and construction for eight years at the University of Illinois. Prior to joining the ranks of project Owners Boyd worked on both the architecture and construction sides of the industry. He has over 35 years of experience and is an architect with a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Iowa State University and Master of Management from Northwestern University. He is currently a member of the US Green Building Council, the AIA Center for Integrated Practice Leadership committee, the AGC Industry Advisory Council and is a current board member and Past President of the Board of the Construction Owners Association of America.

KATIE BRIGGS Account Manager, Bluebeam Software Katie Briggs, P.E., LEED AP BD+C, is an Account Manager at Bluebeam Software, where she channels more than five years of construction industry experience to help Owners and Facilities Management teams optimize workflows and advance efficiency and collaboration with Bluebeam Revu. Katie lends her extracurricular time and talent to the Associated General Contractors San Diego Chapter, where she serves on the Technology Trends Committee and Construction Leadership Council. Using firsthand industry knowledge and a passion for digital solutions, Katie also speaks across the country at trade events; most recently, she led a session about using PDF as a platform for project partner collaboration at ConTech 2015. Prior to joining Bluebeam, Katie was a Project Manager at Clark Construction. She received her Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from University of Notre Dame, where she participated in mission trips with Bridges to Prosperity to bring critical infrastructure to communities in need.

MONTIE GARRISON Associate Principal, Rider Levett Bucknall Montie Garrison is an Associate Principal with Rider Levett Bucknall. During his 27 years with RLB and in the construction industry, Montie has delivered in excess of 450 successfully completed projects ranging in size from 3,000 to 1 million square feet. In his role as an Owner’s Representative and Program Manager he has learned the techniques to manage a project from its very beginnings through to occupancy and operations. His techniques bridge substantial completion from construction to First Day with all the accompanying financial, physical, practical and procedural requirements approved and in place at project’s end. Montie’s years in the industry have allowed him to lead or participate in the research, planning, design, development and construction of a very broad spectrum of project types from high rise commercial and acute hospital and healthcare, to hospitality, resort, residential and planned unit developments across a wide geographic area. 2015 COAA-IL Fall Event  Chicago, IL www.coaa.org

TRAVIS KUEHNER Project Manager, Advocate Health Care Travis Kuehner is a Project Manager in Design and Construction for Advocate Health Care. His background includes 20 years of construction experience with the last 5 years in his current role with Advocate. During this tenure, Travis has been involved in over $150 million in capital construction projects at Illinois Masonic Medical Center from concept through completion. Travis has successfully managed several different types of capital projects including clinical technology replacements, facilities infrastructure upgrades, major replacement, and growth projects. Travis previously was a construction Owner’s Representative for Northshore Health System and Project Manager for several general contractors. Travis is a graduate from Iowa State University with a B.S. degree in Construction Engineering.

DAMION LOEW Product Manager and Co-Founder, Kahua, Inc. In his role as a Product Manager at Kahua, Damion works with Kahua clients that span all roles, from Owners to Specialty Contractors within OAEC, as well as partner consultants, developers and resellers, in bringing leading edge technology and efficiencies to market. An alumnus of Ohio State, Damion has been in the OAEC industry for over 15 years. Beginning as a job captain at Triad Architects in Columbus, Ohio, he moved on to work in Product Management and Support at Constructware and Autodesk. In 2009, Damion teamed up with past colleagues to found Kahua. Kahua is a platform which enables each company to independently define, manage, and exchange data, workflows, and applications internally and with their business partners.

GARY LANE BIM 360 Industry Strategy Specialist, Owners, Autodesk Gary has spent the last 20 years focused on advancements of technologies in the AEC industry. His experience spans from the early inceptions of Building Information Model, BIM, on through evolutions of new 4D, 5D construction technologies and practice. Gary has over a 15 year career with Autodesk, taking on numerous strategic roles getting new ideas and technologies to market for the architectural, engineering and construction industries. His current role is focused on establishing a better understand of the critical business issues impacting Owners, their projects from construction to handover. Professional education is in mechanical engineering and architecture. Gary resides in San Diego, CA with his wife and family.

JAMES J. MLADUCKY, AIA, ACHA, CCS Director Planning & Construction, Northwestern Memorial Healthcare Jim Mladucky is the Director of Facility Planning and Construction for Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, which includes Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Central DePage Hospital, Delar Hospital and Lake Forest Hospital. In this position, Jim is at the forefront of directing the planning, design and construction of facilities that support the Northwestern Medicine patient first philosophy, and its commitment to remain among the nation’s Top Ten academic medical centers. He and his team has recently completed a 25story medical office building adding 1-million square feet to the Chicago campus to address the rising demand for outpatient procedures including joint replacement surgery, GI diagnostics, and creating the home for Northwestern Medicine’s Center for Comprehensive Orthopedic and Spine Care. At Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital, Jim is integral in the campus master planning and campus revitalization efforts, which promises to be a health-focused, “first of the new” facility responding to healthcare delivery under the recent healthcare reform act. At both Central DuPage and Delnor Hospitals, Jim is facilitating the campus master plans to best position Northwestern Medicine in Chicago’s western suburbs for decades. Jim is a member of the American Institute of Architects, was the 2002 chair for the AIA Chicago Healthcare Practice Group, and a founding member of the American College of Healthcare Architects. Prior to joining NMHC, Jim’s project work included master planning for the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor, Virginia Commonwealth University Health System MCV Campus in Richmond, the Clinical Cancer Center at Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin and the Milestone Project at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center and Children's Hospital of Illinois in Peoria, Illinois. Jim practice philosophy centers on collaboration with Northwestern Medicine leaders and clinicians to advance NM’s commitment to design facilities that support advanced care delivery and the building strong relationships between the care givers and their patients. Jim finds solutions that enhance the experiences of those who use Northwestern Medicine locations, while solving business challenges through the design of safe, effective and innovative facilities. He is committed to sustainable facilities and ensures all projects respect the established budget and schedule, while creating places that are consistent with the Northwestern Medicine brand – making Northwestern Medicine the destination of choice for the Chicago region.

CHUCK MIES, LEED AP, ASSOC. AIA Senior Manager, Business Development, Autodesk, Inc. Chuck is a member of the Autodesk Business Development Team focused on looking at the application of technology to the entire ecosystem of a project, extending from preliminary design through operations and maintenance. In this role Chuck works on a global scale with owners in Healthcare, Education and Retail/Hospitality as a resource to assist these clients and the firms that work for them understand the value of Building Information Modeling and the issues that will affect the use of BIM on projects. Chuck has also assisted owners organizations in developing deliverable standards and execution plans that ensure the success of the program for both the owner and the firms making the transition with the owner. He has spoken on these topics at many national conferences and webcasts for organizations such as The BIM Forum, SCUP, COAA, APPA, Labs21 and others. He is also a member of the advisory panel for the Pennsylvania State University BIM Planning Guide for Facilities Owners. Chuck’s background includes 30 years of professional experience spread across the practices of Architecture, facilities management and technology consulting.

CHRIS RIED Project Manager, Patrick Engineering Chris Ried is a Project Manager for Patrick Engineering, focusing on design-build, construction management and hard bid construction. He has served as assistant project manager on large design-build and construction management projects costing up to $25M and is currently managing multiple projects that span from $700k to $2M. Chris has had the unique opportunity over his five years at Patrick to evaluate, implement, and educate his team on technology that has been integrated into the group. The team Chris works on at Patrick is a small group managing mid-size to large projects that needs to constantly evaluate and implement new tools to keep the team efficient and effective in bidding, winning, and executing projects. Chris is passionate about the integration and adoption of technology into engineering and construction and is always looking for new ways to streamline business.

SEAN SPELLMAN Vice President & General Manager, Opus Development Company, LLC Sean is responsible for the leadership and overall management include the pursuit of real estate development, third-party construction and investment opportunities in the Chicagoland area. As such, Sean plays an integral role in defining the office’s daily strategies and future growth plans. Sean has been actively involved in the commercial real estate industry since 1996, and joining Opus in 2011. Previously, Sean served as vice president for nine years at Northern Builders, Inc., a Rosemont-based commercial real estate firm, where he was responsible for the overall sales and marketing as well as overseeing land acquisitions, development and construction operations. 2015 COAA-IL Fall Event  Chicago, IL www.coaa.org

JENNIFER SUERTH Integrated Construction Manager, Mortenson Construction With a unique background in both architecture and structural engineering, Jennifer has been instrumental in leading VDC efforts on various projects at Mortenson. Jennifer is currently managing the Virtual Design and Construction team in Chicago, as well as the implementation of BIM and VDC efforts on multiple large scale projects. Jennifer offers a comprehensive approach to the use of BIM and VDC from early design models through construction and fabrication. Recently she has focused on pushing the envelope with collaborative BIM models, as well as working closely with Owners on leveraging project data for Facility Management. Jennifer is a graduate of the University of Illinois Urbana/Champaign with both a B.S. in Architecture and Master of Architecture (Structures Option). Along with many industry speaking engagements, Jennifer has been actively involved with educating others on BIM. In addition to running various BIM workshops, she is a mentor with the Chicago ACE high school mentor program, where she is helping educate the next generation of designers and builders. Recently a recipient of the Chicago Building Congress Future Leaders Award and ENR Midwest’s Top 20 under 40, she is also an active member of the Chicago Architecture Foundation Auxiliary Board, City of Hope Future Leaders Board, and ACE Auxiliary Board.
