Dear Members and friends of Saint Joseph Parish: Merry Christmas! What does this greeting mean for people of faith? A close friend of mine died at Robinson Memorial Hospital Hospice several years ago at the age of 67, just shortly after Christmas. Jerry’s philosophy of life was that Christmas should be every day. By that he meant that we should reflect the light of Christ to others everyday through acts of kindness, compassion, generosity and good will. Jerry spent his adult life and career as a public servant, attempting to assist persons with disabilities. His life was somewhat obscure, unrecognized as having any significance. But in his heart he strived to do what is right and just to benefit those whom he had the opportunity to serve. During the holiday season we can get caught up in traditions of celebrating and buying presents. May we all ask God to deepen our faith and help us realize that the most important present is ourselves given freely, non-judgmentally and unconditionally to others, every day of the year, following the example of Christ the teacher and Christ the servant. We are a vibrant and life-giving faith community here at St. Joseph Parish. The Christ of our faith continues to be present through all of our wonderful ministries and in our times of prayer and worship together. Our parish has continued to nurture the faith in our young people. We are blessed to acknowledge a beloved son of our parish who has just made his solemn profession of vows in the Dominican religious order, Brother James-Peter Trares, O.P. Bro. James-Peter recently sent us a letter that was published in our bulletin. His vocation to religious life is a gift from God that was nurtured by his family and this faith community. We are truly blessed and may we all continue to be a blessing to others in need of our encouragement and our ministries. I believe Bro. James-Peter offered us in his recent letter a very well expressed and prayerful blessing: “God bless you and your families as you draw closer to Christ, who loved us to the point of entering into human life 2000 years ago, and who still enters each of our lives each day.” Peace be with you!
