Dear Friends, Thank you for your support of Nemours Children’s Health System. In 2015, you helped us raise more than $12 million from more than 6,500 donors in the Delaware Valley and Florida. We receive philanthropic donations from community members, Associates, corporations, foundations and community organizations. Every donated dollar helps our kids by improving patient care and services, acquiring capital equipment, educating patients and practitioners, and conducting medical research. The Nemours Fund for Children’s Health is proud to have honored Susan and Dan Katzin with the 2015 Inspiration Award. This award is given to Nemours Society members who personify philanthropy, generosity, a commitment to the community and a willingness to approach others to join them in giving, In 2015, the Katzins pledged $4 million toward the development of a comprehensive clinical and research program for children with autism and other neurological disorders at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. The expanded program will improve access to diagnosis and treatment for children with autism, facilitate the creation of an autism-friendly environment, and introduce a PET/MRI Center, which will reduce radiation exposure and help neurologists offer state-of-the-art care. The Katzins’ generous donation aided in the recruitment of Dr. Diane C. Chugani, a renowned autism researcher, and Dr. Harry T. Chugani, an internationally prominent neurologist and epilepsy specialist. “We have a child on the autism spectrum, so we know the challenges that families face, and we felt we had to respond. We wholeheartedly believe this program will provide urgently needed resources.”

Recognizing the need for additional funding, the Katzins offered a challenge gift. They will contribute an additional one-million-dollar gift when the Nemours Fund for Children’s Health raises $5 million toward the overall program. From the time Dr. Bob Wilson went to medical school, he has had a soft heart for children. He says, “Children are my business; my only business.” Dr. Wilson, affectionately called “Dr. Bob,” worked at Sacred Heart Hospital and Florida State University College of Medicine for 30 years. He witnessed the evolution of pediatric specialty care in the Pensacola area after the Nemours Children’s Clinic opened in 1995. He has served on the Florida Board of Managers for eight years and he was involved in the opening of Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando. Dr. Wilson said he is proud to support Nemours with Charlie Faye, his wife of 59 years. “The only thing we really keep is what we give away — be it service (time and talent) or treasure,” he said.

Dr. Billie Winegard joined Nemours in 2015 as the first external fellow for the accredited Hospice and Palliative Medicine physician fellowship at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. Dr. Winegard’s position is supported by a gift from Trudie Thompson. The palliative care program, directed by Dr. Elissa Miller, is a multidisciplinary team that aims to enhance quality of life for seriously ill patients and their families. Nemours is honored to be helping to train the next generation of palliative care physicians with this fellowship, and is very grateful for the philanthropic support that makes it possible.

When Microsoft had its annual conference in Orlando in July 2015, the employees wanted to help the children at Nemours Children’s Hospital. Collectively, they raised $30,000 to purchase 50 Xbox units, and they utilized a volunteer day to install them in patient rooms and gathering places throughout the hospital. The game systems provide a welcome distraction for kids while they are in the hospital. 13

Supporting Oncology Patients in Jacksonville The Child Cancer Fund (CCF) was started by a group of parents whose children had been diagnosed with cancer. CCF provides comprehensive support for oncology families, which includes supporting a Child Life Specialist, Joli Craver, who focuses on oncology patients at Nemours Children’s Specialty Care, Jacksonville. Craver uses play and diversionary activities to help children with the anxiety and fear they often have about needles, IV poles and chemotherapy transfusions.

The Tom Coughlin Jay Fund provides financial, emotional and practical support to families tackling childhood cancer.

She also spends time with the children when their parents are talking with the doctors. “Someone needs to be with the kids, so the parents can focus on the important decisions they have to make,” says Carla Montgomery, CCF executive director. “These children are fighting for their lives, but they still need to play and be kids.”

“We want to be there for these families, so they can be there for their children,” says founder Coach Coughlin. “We hope to help meet the short-term financial needs of the family, as well as provide long-term support through recovery and beyond.”

Help for Children with Rare Orthopedic Conditions

Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del., has a 75-year legacy of caring for children with orthopedic conditions, including all types of skeletal dysplasia. Genetics has been an important component of research and clinical care from the beginning. Dr. Michael Bober, an orthopedic geneticist at duPont Hospital for Children, has received support from the Walking with Giants Foundation and The Potentials Foundation to support research of primordial dwarfism and from Rhizo Kids International to support research of rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata.

With these grants, the Division of Orthogenetics has hired a research assistant and is building a repository of medical information about individuals with these extremely rare conditions. Ultimately, the grants are facilitating analysis of conditions where research is greatly needed.

A note from Denni Ferrara, President of the Leukemia Research Foundation of Delaware The Leukemia Research Foundation of Delaware is devoted to finding cures for childhood cancer. Because our volunteer team gives so much time and energy and because the cause is so critical, it is important to know that our grants make a difference. We have found a perfect partner in Nemours. The Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (NCCBD) is a collaborative national leader in childhood cancer research. Dr. Andy Kolb, director of NCCBD, plays multiple roles in the Children’s Oncology Group, a clinical trials group supported by the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Kolb’s national perspective and hands-on clinical knowledge give him incredible insight on research opportunities and priorities. We are proud that our investment at Nemours has fostered collaboration and helped leverage additional grants. We also value the fact that Nemours uses 100 percent of our grants for research without applying administrative fees.
