20 15 A NNUAL RE POR T

From our Executive Director and Founder

Jane M. Hanson President and Executive Director

Inspired by a dear friend who opened my eyes to what it means for a victim of domestic violence to be on her own in court, I left the private sector in 2002 to launch Partners for Women and Justice with another attorney. Since then, I have been inspired by the incredible generosity of people like you who are helping to bridge the justice gap, and I am delighted to share with you our inaugural annual report. From the outset, Partners’ mission has been to assist abused women in securing safe and secure futures for themselves and their children by providing equal access to justice. Every day, our courageous and determined clients remind me of what survivors of domestic violence face in their attempts to flee abuse. While “equal justice under the law” may be inscribed on our courthouses, the application of justice is anything but equal. The advantages of those who can afford attorneys over those who cannot are selfevident and not easily overcome. With each woman they help, Partners’ dedicated pro

bono and staff attorneys remind me of how knowledgeable and sensitive legal assistance transforms our clients’ lives, whether it’s by obtaining a restraining order, securing an order for child support, or enabling a mother to move out of state with her children to be closer to a support system and job opportunities. Every day I am reminded of your largesse, which makes our work possible. Together, in the 13 years since Partners was founded, we have improved the lives of thousands of women and their children and are helping to break the cycle of abuse for the next generation. Many thanks for your past contributions and support. As we look to the future, we hope you will continue to be part of the Partners’ family working to end domestic violence.

Jane M. Hanson, Esq.

CATHERINE is a personable, college-educated professional woman who met and fell in love with a charismatic and articulate advocate for social justice. They shared a passion for serving their community and soon married, but her husband became physically abusive and intimidating. After a particularly violent episode that put her in the hospital, she decided to leave him. She went directly from the emergency room to the police station and obtained a temporary restraining order. Knowing she would need a lawyer to go up against her abuser at the final hearing, Catherine contacted Partners for assistance. We assigned one of our staff attorneys to represent her. She worried that the judge would not believe her, but her lawyer subpoenaed police records, collected incriminating evidence from social media, worked with the prosecutor to document evidence of prior violent incidents and spent many hours preparing Catherine for direct and crossexamination at trial. With the Partners attorney by her side, Catherine – standing within a few feet of her abuser – testified bravely and credibly at trial and obtained a final restraining order. Catherine now lives a peaceful life and is incredibly thankful to Partners for its life-changing assistance and support. She wants other women in similar situations to know that organizations like Partners can help them and has become a dedicated advocate for victims of domestic violence. *Name is changed to protect the confidentiality of Partners’ client.

The Power of Pro Bono Attorneys THANKS TO THE DEDICATION of more than 150 attorneys who donate their time, talent and resources to our organization, the number of Partners’ clients who are accompanied to court by their own legal counsel is double what it would otherwise be without these amazing volunteers.

pro bono program with Partners exposes our “The attorneys to a world they might not know and makes them better people and better lawyers. ” —SAMUEL THOMAS, Esq. Bressler, Amery & Ross, PC

The lawyers we recruit, who hail from law firms both large and small, are deeply committed to putting their legal education and experience to work by representing our clients at final restraining order trials, even though these cases fall into an area of law that is often initially unfamiliar to them. Before taking on their first case, the volunteers complete an accredited Continuing Legal Education Domestic Violence Training Program developed jointly by Partners and the Rachel Coalition, a domestic violence social service agency. Our legal staff provides ongoing mentoring and confers with our volunteers about strategy and tactics for every matter. Displaying the same zeal they use when representing paying clients, our pro bono lawyers gain valuable courtroom and trial experience. In addition to legal representation, volunteer lawyers staff our Saturday clinics, which provide our clients the opportunity to meet individually with attorneys to discuss divorce-related matters.
