With a state-of-the-art city-wide fiber optic network, the city has grabbed the attention of national organizations like US Ignite because of its promising combination of tech infrastructure, talented professionals, and renowned educational institutions. US Ignite, an organization that supports the development of next-generation applications, named Burlington one of its 17 Ignite communities in 2013. The recognition just highlighted what residents of the city already knew: Burlington is the home of a new generation of exciting and innovative startups and tech ventures, and BTV Ignite, the city’s partnership with the national organization, is just the tip of the iceberg for technologybased start-ups in Chittenden County. For businesses just starting out, the city and its surrounding communities offer a wealth of opportunities. LaunchVT, an annual business pitch competition run by the Lake Champlain Chamber of Commerce, awards cash prizes and in-kind resources to entrepreneurs who deliver plans for a new business enterprise demonstrating exceptional potential in today’s market. Entering its third year, the competition’s previous winners – Gredio, a software start-up for food companies, and IrisVR, an immersive design and presentation tool – show

The story of Vermont, the story of the Lake Champlain Region, cannot be told without telling the story of generations of "new Americans" who came here seeking relief from persecution, the freedom to practice their beliefs without harassment and the sense of welcoming that Vermont offers to all who seek comfort in its hills and along its waters. Burlington has acted as the melting pot for Vermont much like New York City has for most of our nation. French-Canadians, Italians, Jews, Poles, Irish and other groups all found their way here and became the leaders of our community. Even today businesses, streets, memorials, statuary, voting roles and the names of political leaders trace their lineage to ancestors who made their way to the numerous ethnic neighborhoods that existed then and today. Each group ultimately became accepted and ingrained into the community with many of these groups aligning today to save a true historical artifact of the old Jewish neighborhoods in the North End: The Lost Shul Mural. During the latter half of the twentieth century, Burlington once again stepped forward to provide refuge and hope

for new immigrants looking to start a new life free from fear and oppression. Refugees from Southeast Asia fleeing the ravages of strife following the Vietnam War found Vermont and the Burlington area a place where education, jobs and community support abounded. Likewise did Eastern Europeans, Sudanese Lost Boys, Somalis, Bantus and many other groups. In fact, within Burlington city schools you can hear more than 50 languages and dialects spoken and see youth wearing traditional clothing, practicing social and religious traditions and engaged in school sports and other activities. Vermont has long been considered a place where anyone is welcome to share in the beauty of our landscape and enjoy all that our state has to offer visitors. In fact, Vermont was the first state in the nation to enact civil unions for same sex couples and the first state that chose to extend marriage rights to all couples. They are always happy to chat, offer information or help you with directions. The Georgia Southbound Rest Area is also part of the Chamber’s tourism team. Located about two miles south of St Albans on Interstate 89, it is often the first stop for visitors coming from Quebec and northern New York.
