“A LIFE IS NOT IMPORTANT EXCEPT IN THE IMPACT IT HAS ON OTHER LIVES.” JACKIE ROBINSON

“Failure is not an option when it comes to helping all children graduate from college. Since 1997, the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA has awarded over 150 scholarships... to college-bound high school seniors from San Diego County's most critical community.”

Michael Brunker Executive Director, Jackie Robinson Family YMCA

Our Members The YMCA has been a great help to me and my family by offering programs designed around children of all age groups. It gives my children the opportunity to have experiences I would not otherwise be able to provide. I am grateful to the YMCA for making it possible for my children to belong. In camp, my children have learned how to interact with others their own age and during difficult situations. They have also learned how to cope and deal with things that may not go their way using character values. My children have also learned how to swim at the YMCA. Adore’-16, Julian-13, AnthonyNone of this would be possible 8, Brielle-7, and Bre Yon-7 without the financial aid I receive. This is a great benefit for me as well, being a single mother of 5 children working full time without receiving any child support to help pay for the programs at the YMCA. Since my family was terminated from the Calworks welfare-to-work program due to budget issues, this has been the only program that I can afford and that is only because of the financial assistance program that was offered.

There are so many reasons why my family loves the Y but one of the things I like about the programs is the staff. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and works with me to offer the FA that I need in order to allow my children to attend. I also like that the schedules coincide with my work hours to accommodate parents who work longer hours. I think that everyone should know that the Jackie Robinson YMCA is a family-oriented organization that doesn’t discriminate against race, age, religion, disabilities, financial situations, etc. At the Y, you are treated with respect and as if you are part of the family. Thank you for taking my family in as one of your own. - Vickiquita Rucker, Y Member and Parent

10 high school seniors will be awarded college scholarships. $86,000 in membership subsidies will be given to more than 1,000 families in need. 2,000 children involved in youth sports will receive nearly $25,000 in program subsidy over four seasons. 800 children will learn to swim at our YMCA and receive an average 60% program subsidy amounting to over $15,000. Over 1,500 children will be able to attend summer day camp on a sliding scale.

Ramona (77) and Joe (80) Daniels have participated for several years in our Active Older Adults workout group that meets four times a week and includes events like a Senior Prom, Birthday Parties, weekly potlucks, and much more. “We made a lot of friends with our workout class, and the Y has provided many benefits with their free outings, special treats, etc.”, says Ramona. Adds Joe, “There are a lot of good things that have happened to me in my lifetime. Coming to the YMCA has been the best thing. My life began when I started coming to the Jackie Robinson Y. I have a lot more energy, motivation, and things just seem brighter.”

The Number 42 “Sixty one years I’ve been in baseball. I’ve played and worked with some of the all-time legends, like Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, and Dave Winfield. Right near the top of that list was Jackie Robinson, who not only broke records, he shattered the barriers. He not only made a big difference in the game, he forever changed baseball. Jackie led, so that players like Satchel Paige, Willie Mays, and Hank Aaron could follow. But Jackie’s contribution shouldn’t be measured on his batting average. It’s much bigger than that. Jackie wanted to make a difference in the lives of at-risk kids - with mentoring programs and scholarships for deserving youth. Join me as we fight that good fight - to give a better future to our kids. When it comes to our kids, we all have to pitch in.”
