Applying for Ideal ASDA & Most Improved Chapter ASDASF represents ASDA’s core values of passion, community, engagement, and integrity, and continually strives to improve itself as a chapter.

Aligning our chapter's aims with ASDA's core tenets, ASDASF's members strive to emanate the spirit of ASDA through all that we do. It is easy to generate ardent fervor and rally behind an organization dedicated to protecting and advancing the rights of the future of dentistry that is, the dental students. Eager to represent, ASDASF members undergo a strenuous application process to become a part of the eclectic UCSF delegation, consistently boasting eight to ten candidates that defend and echo the voice of ASDASF at national conferences. Additionally, our chapter focuses on expanding beyond our local presence by assisting four ASDASF members in attaining two national leadership positions along with two district positions. At home, ASDASF is a vanguard in all facets of student life, aspiring to equip students to not only become competent clinicians but altruistic leaders of their community. From organizing dental screenings to volunteering at food banks, ASDASF is determined to extend a helping hand to those in need. Recognizing our outreach efforts in developing an oral hygiene education program at the Berkeley Free Clinic, national ADSA awarded our chapter the "Taking Oral Hygiene Awareness to Rural and Underserved America" grant. ASDASF is constantly seeking ways to improve our students' educational experience as well. Recognizing a dearth of ethics courses in our curriculum, ASDASF brought the issue to light and collaborated with the administration in providing thought-provoking ethics lunch and learns and established a Student Professional Ethics Association (SPEA) chapter under the ASDA banner. With the emerging movement gaining traction, we are working to cement ethics as a mandatory component of our education by developing an ethics course series. With a stringent vendor policy and exclusivity agreements in place with select companies, UCSF exposes its students to a very narrow scope of dental instruments and materials. To rectify this deficiency, ASDASF holds an annual exhibitor's fair, featuring in excess of 30 vendors, that is frequented by over 300 dental students, alumni, and faculty. While we demand a lot out of our ASDASF members, we also shower them with appreciation through membership benefits, team-building socials, and appreciation banquets. Perpetuating the tireless work ethic and devout dedication of its members, ASDASF hopes to propel our burgeoning chapter to greater heights.

UCSF Fall Quarterly Newsletter, 2013

Blending in: A journey to a new life So many dentists from around the world immigrate to the US to gain more knowledge and skills but the path through the dental program in the US is full of obstacles. Some schools including UCSF have tried to incorporate special programs into their training to better accommodate international students. Here at UCSF the International Dentist Program (IDP) is a unique and remarkable way of training international applicants. American Student Dental Association (ASDA) also plays a major role here by trying to bridge the gap between American and international students; ASDA provides a unique opportunity for both groups of students to collaborate on several aspects of education and dental practice. The UCSF ASDA Chapter is one of few schools to have been awarded the “Taking Oral Hygiene Awareness to Rural and Underserved America” grant this year. This grant provides funding support for oral hygiene education initiatives to underserved communities that could greatly benefit from oral hygiene education. Students at UCSF have partnered with members of The Berkeley Free Clinic (BFC) team to enhance their dental services through this grant. The BFC is a clinic located 15 miles outside of San Francisco that has for over 40 years stood as an icon to the community and as a safe haven to receive free medical, dental, and counseling services regardless of race, age, gender, or economic status. The Dental Section currently provides cleanings, extractions, and restorative services to those

When is it Appropriate to Fire a Patient?

All About ASDA!

Devin Bernhardt

It has been said that 5% of patients cause 95% of the problems in a dental practice. Everyone has a mouth and nearly everyone will visit the dentist. That means that you will meet the most wonderful people, but also patients that may not be so wonderful and it will be up to you to decide how to manage these patients. As a dental professional we have obligations, one of which is that the patient’s

welfare comes first. But sometimes whats best for the patient is to not have you be their provider. There are a number of acceptable reasons to dismiss a patient the most common include: unreasonable demands or expectations, failure to pay for services, too many missed appointments, not able to comply with your recommendations and exhibiting rude or difficult behavior toward you or your staff. If a patient acts inappropriately and will not change their behavior after a reasonable effort

is made by the dentist, it is in the best interest of both to end the relationship. However, a patient cannot be let go for any reason. Patients have rights and cannot be dismissed based on disability, race, creed, ethnicity, gender or age and also cannot be abandoned. “Abandonment of a case by a physician without sufficient notice or adequate excuse is a dereliction of duty, and if injury results there from, the physician may be held liable in continued on page 8 damages.”

Devin Bernhardt Tiffany Hsu and Nicole (Neek) LaMantia have been selected for national American Student Dental Association (ASDA) positions: as Council Associate to the Council on Communications, and as Electronic Editor, respectively.
