ANATOMY Schedule for 2013/2014 academic school year II (Summer) SEMESTER – 15 weeks x 9 hours = 135 hours Lecture = 3 hours. Laboratory class = 2 hours (2 times per a week) Seminar = 2 hours (in computer classroom)

1st week: Lectures: 1. Surface anatomy of the face and neck. Muscles of the facial expression. Muscles of mastication. Cervical fascia. Common carotid artery (position, relationships, terminal branches). External carotid artery (position, relationships, collateral and terminal branches) Laboratory classes: 1. Skull – division of bones. Vault of cranium: Frontal, parietal and occipital bones (2 hours) 2. Ethmoid and sphenoid bones (2 hours) Seminar: Temporal bone (1 hour) + Joints of head and neck (1 hour - computer classroom)

2nd week: Lectures: 1. Internal carotid artery. Subclavian artery. Venous sinuses of the dura mater. Veins of the head and neck. Lymphatics of the head and neck. Cervical plexus. Skin of the neck – innervation. Laboratory classes: 1. Facial skeleton. Maxilla, mandible, palatine bone (2 hours) 2. Other bones of the facial skeleton: nasal, lacrimal and zygomatic bones, inferior nasal concha, vomer. Hyoid bone. Base of the skull. (2 hours) Seminar: Orbit, nasal cavity, temporal and infratemporal fossa, pterygopalatine fossa (1 hour) + Skull – calvaria. Skull of the newborn. (1 hour - computer classroom)

3rd week: Lectures: 1. Sympathetic nervous system of the head and neck. Cranial nerves (CN) – division. Parasympathetic nervous system. Cranial nerves: CN V (skin of the face – innervation). CN VII. Vegetative ganglia of the head (ciliary, pterygopalatine, otic and submandibular ganglia). Laboratory classes: 1. Anterior and posterior triangle of the neck. Muscles of the neck: platysma; sternocleidomastoid muscle. Suprahyoid and infrahyoid muscles. Cervical fascia. Superficial veins. Cervical plexus (2 hours) 2. Deep muscles of the neck (scalene and prevertebral muscles). Carotid sheath – content. External carotid artery and its branches. Internal carotid artery. Subclavian artery and its branches (2 hours) Seminar: Muscles of the neck (1+1= 2 hours)

4th week: Lectures: 1. Oral cavity. Vestibule (gingivae, teeth). Oral cavity proper: tongue (morphology, muscles, innervation), sublingual region, hard and soft palates. Salivary glands (large and small). Pharynx. Laboratory classes: 1. Posterior region of the neck. Muscles (suboccipital triangle). Scalp (2 hours) 2. Superficial regions of the face. Parotid region (2 hours) Seminar: Blood vessels (arterial and venous systems) of the head and neck (1+1= 2 hours)

5th week: Lectures: 1. Lateral pharyngeal and retropharyngeal spaces (boundaries and contents). CN – IX, X, XI and XII. Nasal cavity. (External nose. Walls of nasal cavity. Apertures). CN – I. Paranasal sinuses. Laboratory classes: 1. Infratemporal region. Lateral pharyngeal and retropharyngeal spaces – walls and content (2 hours) 2. Oral cavity. Pharynx (2 hours) Seminar: Ganglia of the head and neck (1 hour) + Lymphatics of the head and neck (1 hour – computer classroom)

6th week: Lectures: 1. Larynx (cartilages, position, ligaments and membranes, joints and muscles). Laryngeal cavity, blood vessels, lymphatics and nerves. Thyroid and parathyroid glands.

Laboratory classes: 1. Nasal cavity. Paranasal sinuses. CN – I (2 hours) 2. Larynx. Thyroid and parathyroid glands (2 hours) Seminar: Topography – regions of the head and neck (1+1= 2 hours)

7th week: Lectures: 1. Eyeball – shape, coats (fibrous, vascular, internal). Contents of the eyeball (anterior and posterior chambers, aqueous humor, lens, vitreous body). Muscles of the orbit. Ophthalmic artery. CN – II; CN - III, IV and VI. Laboratory classes: 1. Orbit. Eyeball (2 hours) 2. Orbital cavity – content (2 hours) Seminar: Eyeball – content (1 hour) + Extrinsic eye muscles, fascial sheath, orbital fat body, periorbita, eyelids, conjunctiva, lacrimal apparatus (1 hour - computer classroom)

8th week: Lectures: 1. External ear (auricle, external acoustic meatus, tympanic membrane). Middle ear: tympanic cavity (walls, content, parts), auditory tube and mastoid antrum. Laboratory classes: 1. Applied anatomy of the head and neck, base of the skull and cranial nerves, venous sinuses of dura mater 2. Sectional anatomy of the head and neck (2 hours) Seminar: External ear. Middle ear (1 hour) + Clinical anatomy of the cranial nerves (1 hour - computer classroom)

9th week: Lectures: 1. Internal ear (bony and membranous labyrinth). CN – VIII; Central nervous system introduction, development, subdivisions, internal structure. Spinal cord. Laboratory classes: 1. Ear: external, middle and internal. (2 hours) 2. CNS – subdivisions and general organization. Main parts of the brain. Spinal cord. (2 hours) Seminar: CNS: basic organization (1 hour) + Changes in the central nervous system related to aging (1 hour - computer classroom)

10th week: Lectures: 1. Brainstem (boundaries, gross anatomy, general organization). Brainstem (gray matter). Laboratory classes: 1. Medulla oblongata and pons - morphology (2 hours) 2. Medulla oblongata and pons - general organization, sectional anatomy (2 hours) Seminar: Brainstem – nuclei, reticular formation (1 hour) + Nuclei of cranial nerves (1 hour – computer classroom)

11th week: Lectures: 1. Brainstem (white matter and organization). Cerebellum – external morphology. Cerebellum (gray and white matter – its afferent and efferent connections). Fourth ventricle (walls and communications) Laboratory classes: 1. Midbrain (morphology, general organization - gray and white matter, cerebral aqueduct, sectional anatomy) - (2 hours) 2. Cerebellum. Fourth ventricle (2 hours) Seminar: Pretectal area, MLF (1 hour) + Functional anatomy of the cerebellum (1 hour – computer classroom)

12th week: Lectures: 1. Diencephalon (gross anatomy, general organization – thalamus, hypothalamus, metathalamus, epithalamus). Diencephalon (gray and white matter). Third ventricle (walls and communications). Dorsal longitudinal fasciculus. Laboratory classes: 1. Diencephalon (main parts, gross anatomy, general organization - thalamus, hypothalamus, metathalamus, epithalamus). Third ventricle - (2 hours) 2. Diencephalon. Sectional anatomy – thalamus, hypothalamus, metathalamus, epithalamus (2 hours) Seminar: Diencephalon - hypothalamus (1 + 1 = 2 hours)

13th week: Lectures: 1. Telencephalon, surface anatomy of the cerebral hemispheres, general organization - gray and white matter. Cerebral cortex. Basal ganglia. Interhemispheric commissures. Lateral ventricle. Laboratory classes: 1. Telencephalon - general organization; gray matter: cerebral cortex and basal nuclei (sections). Lateral ventricle. (2 hours) 2. Functional organization of the cerebral cortex. Interhemispheric commissures (2 hours) Seminar: Basal nuclei (1 hour) + Limbic system (1 hour – computer classroom)

14th week: Lectures: 1. Motor pathways of the CNS. Sensory pathways of the CNS. Laboratory classes: 1. Telencephalon general organization – white matter (sections). Limbic system (2 hours) 2. Basal nuclei. Internal capsule and composition (2 hours) Seminar: Motor and sensory systems (1 hour) + Sectional anatomy of the brain and spinal cord (1 hour – computer classroom)

15th week: Lectures: 1. Visual and auditory pathways. Vestibular, olfactory and gustatory pathways. Laboratory classes: 1. Ventricular system. Meninges: dura mater, arachnoid mater, pia mater and meningeal spaces. Cerebrospinal fluid (2 hours) 2. Blood vessels of the brain and spinal cord (2 hours) Seminar: Clinical anatomy of the meninges, meningeal spaces and cerebrospinal fluid (1 hour) + Blood vessels of the brain (1 hour – computer classroom)
