2013 -WHAT A START TO A NEW YEAR! Whoever would have thought that after the floods in January 2011 we would be in for such a terrible disaster again in such a short time? And if floods alone would not have been enough, destructive storms did extensive damage to the coastal areas. Innes Park, Coral Cove and Elliott Heads seem to be a few of the lucky places that were spared.

There will be lots of businesses and families who will need a helping hand, some just to survive, some to rebuild, some to start fresh. Monetary donations would be most appreciated, as the funds to help the flood victims could be spent in local businesses, which in turn would help them to get back on their feet as well. Please donate to Premier’s Flood Relief Appeal 1800 811 700 or www.redcross.org.au If you have time and are not afraid to help out you can volunteer helping in the clean up efforts or in the temporary shelters for victims. Please go to www.volunteeringqld.org.au and register under emergency volunteering or phone 1800 994 100

Many people would have lost everything they own and will be in dire need for all household goods, clothing, food, toys, furniture etc. to start again. Donations can be left at Seventh Day Adventist Church 61 Woongarra Street Gudrun Burke

PRESIDENTS REPORT As many of you are aware this has been a devastating start to the year with the Tornados and Floods affecting the wider community. Its events like these that bring communities together to help those in need and assist where possible. For those wanting to donate their time or financial assistance to the flood recovery effort, Greg Barnes has established a receipted collection point at the Turtle Park in Bargara. If anyone would like to contact Greg for further contributions or for further details please call Greg on 0488 539 123 or 0407 155 727 or you can keep up to date on Greg’s webpage www.gregbarnes.com.au or Facebook page. With so many trees fallen the council will be collecting fallen vegetation from roadside points, it has been requested that we attempt to congregate the piles rather than having individual piles of debris for each property. The major emergency assistance centre has been established at the YMCA in Bundaberg and there will be Emergency Management staff available to assist with insurance claims etc. as I am sure the extent and variety of damage claims are significant. If you would like more information regarding the emergency relief efforts please contact the council on 1300 883 We have a lot to be thankful for the efforts of the emergency services teams, including the State Emergency Services, Queensland Police Service, Australian Army, Queensland Fire & Rescue Service, Ergon Energy, Telstra and the many community groups that have dedicated their time and efforts to helping to restore essential services and to evacuate those caught in the middle of the floods. On a lighter note, the heavy winds and rains on Saturday caused the postponement

of the Australia Day festivities, it is anticipated this event will be held tentatively sometime in March, please contact the Innes Park Neighbourhood Watch for further updates. There was strong support shown by the local businesses, with many prizes being offered for raffles with proceeds going to assist the local emergency services network. I would like to thank all of the members and guests that attended our last meeting in November which saw a lot of discussion with Greg Barnes regarding the street gardens throughout Coral Cove. Greg presented the Bundaberg Regional Council’s proposal to maintain and improve the street gardens throughout Coral Cove & Innes Park, which was accepted by all at the meeting. We are very pleased to see the entrance round-about has already been enhanced by the council and we anticipate further improvements throughout the rest of Coral Cove and Innes Park This engagement by council with the community is welcomed by the Ratepayers association and we look forward to further discussions of issues affecting our community in the future. One of the future issues also raised at the meeting was the pending Holcim Quarry relocation to Cnr of Barolin Homestead Road and Elliot Heads Road. It was discussed at the meeting that the Ratepayers Association should be responsible for informing the community of the development application. Further information will be available as it comes to hand on the “Coral Cove / Innes Park Quarry Action Group” Facebook page where a copy of the application can be viewed for consideration. LOCAL COUNCIL UPDATE (Written prior to the Floods)

MAYORS NEW YEAR MESSAGE Welcome to 2013. I, alongside the rest of the Councillors, are looking forward to another year of progress. I have been in office for just over 8 months and as a Council we have already achieved some fantastic things for this region such as strengthening business and tourism ties with our sister city Nanning, China, sourcing over $60 million in ADRRA Funding for road repairs as well as adding on additional works on council’s budget to repair the regions roads, approving numerous business opportunities including the Big Strawberry and a modular building assembly plant near Childers as well as hosting events such as The Queensland Schools Championship Regatta, Childers Festival and the Formula Power Boat Grand Prix. Turning to 2013, the Council was a sponsor of the 2013 Commonwealth Bank Australian Country Cricket Championships, the biggest non-metropolitan cricket event in Australia. We will also welcomed delegates from Nanning in January who toured our region allowing us to strengthen ties with our sister city. This year will also see the new Bundaberg Regional Planning Scheme being reviewed by the State Government and Community. The plan will replace the six existing planning schemes and make the approval process consistent across the region. Council will also deliver the budget in July this year and as shown by the budget, we will continue to deliver great value for less. My leadership stance the beginning has been about growth for real value and Council will continue to do this in 2013. Cr Mal Forman Mayor

FEB 2013

CHINESE NEW YEAR Chinese New Year will be staged at Alexandra Park on Sunday 17th February 2013 and celebrations will include traditional dancing and fireworks. A highlight of the celebrations, which will begin at 3.30pm in Alexandra Park, will be performers direct from Nanning in China which is one of Council’s Sister Cities.

Local performers including the Norville State School Taiko Japanese drummers will add to the entertainment. Anyone interested in Dragon Boat Racing will be able to take a closer look at a boat and chat with enthusiasts. Other highlights of the free entertainment will include an exhilarating display of vibrant Dragon and Lion Dancing by Bundaberg’s own PCYC Blazers, Tae Kwan Do performance, with the night culminating in an amazing display of fireworks, emanating from a barge strategically located on the Burnett River. Australian Country Cricket Championships Bundaberg was proud to host a fully funded civic reception to mark the beginning of 2013 Australian Country Cricket Championships on January 2. Bundaberg’s reputation is growing as a centre providing top class sporting facilities and events and I, alongside the Councillors are proud to support these events that bring a major boost to our accommodation providers, food outlets and tourism facilities as well as exposing our local population to world class sport. Council was pleased to partner with the Bundaberg Cricket Association in the organisation of this event and has provided additional water to ensure facilities at Salter Oval and Kendall Flats are appropriate for competition as well as assisting with the importation of a supply of black soil to ensure pitches are maintained in peak condition.

Big Strawberry Approved Council’s Planning Committee approved SSS Strawberries ‘Big Strawberry’ tourism development at a meeting at the end of November last year and I couldn’t be more excited about this development.

Coral Cove Bar & bistro hours

(Written prior to the Floods)

Coastal Census Statistics Compared I’ve recently compiled a chart which compares the key statistics of the coastal townships of Burnett Heads, Bargara, Innes Park, Coral Cove and Elliott Heads and benchmarks them against those of Bundaberg, Queensland & Australia. The results are quite interesting and can be accessed by navigating through my personal website at: www.gregbarnes.com.au - ‘About Division 5’ or by going directly to.... http://www.gregbarnes.com.au/ wp-content/uploads/2012/12/2011-CensusComparison-Chart.pdf Social Media Helps Community Consultation About a year ago I decided to delve into the abyss of social media as another means of consulting with local residents. Having established a Facebook account, I made it a point to keep away from any online disputes or letting the world know when I was visiting Maccas. Instead, I use it primarily to provide information which I think may be of interest to the community (and especially to those within Division 5) and to receive and act upon requests, queries and/or complaints relating to Council issues. The ‘Bargara Facebookers’ page (with 243 members) continues to provide easy and effective feedback and enables me to address issues with minimal delay. Unfortunately the Coral Cove Residents & Ratepayers Association page and the Innes Park Neighbourhood Watch page only have 7 & 4 ‘friends’ respectively.

History of Innes Park: Part 3 In 1912, Barolin Station was purchased by a former surveyor, Sidney North Innes, who also owned Walla Station which he bought after selling his Northern Territory cattle station in 1905. At one stage, he decided to run 2,500 sheep on the property, but this turned out to be a disaster as most of the sheep became riddled with worms and died. Barolin Plain was definitely more suited to cattle. We can thank Sidney and his wife for their foresight into the community and their donation of land for parkland. A cairn was erected near the mouth of Palmer’s Creek which reads: ‘The land comprising this park and roadways leading thereto, formerly part of Barolin Station was donated by Mr and Mrs Sidney North Innes on the 19th April, 1930, to the Woongarra Shire Council for the use as a public park. This park became known as Innes Park, the land, the township took its name from. In 1976, further oceanfront parkland was donated to the Woongarra Shire Council by the Rehbein family, the developers of Coolanblue Estate. The parkland is known as Kalina Park. ‘Kalina” is said to be an Aboriginal word meaning ‘a park by the sea’.
