FIND THE RIGHT MIC There’s a Shure microphone crafted for any application. Here’s a brief explanation of microphone characteristics that will help you select a microphone that best meets your needs and captures your sound.
Operating Principle How a microphone changes sound into an electrical signal. This is determined by the type of transducer inside the microphone. The two most common types are:
Dynamic Simple, rugged diaphragm/coil. Handles extreme volume levels without distortion.
Condenser Lightweight, sensitive diaphragm. Precisely and smoothly captures sound nuances. Powered by battery or phantom power supply.
Polar Pattern A microphone’s polar pattern is the representation of its directionality. Directionality describes how a microphone responds to sound from different directions.
Omnidirectional Equally sensitive to sound from all directions, but cannot be “aimed” to isolate one area.
Bidirectional Picks up sound equally from the front and back of the microphone.
Cardioid Picks up the most sound in front of the microphone and some from the sides. Less susceptible to feedback in high volume environments.
Lobar A lobar polar pattern has the highest possible directivity. A lobar pattern is achieved with a shotgun microphone only.
Supercardioid Screens unwanted sound sources. Ideal for individual instruments in a multimicrophone setting, or single sources in noisy environments.
Hypercardioid Provides maximum isolation from ambient noise and adjacent sound such as musical instruments, loudspeakers and other performers.
Halfcardioid Picks up the most sound from above the flat mounted microphone and some sound from the sides.
Subcardioid For use on quiet stages, especially where bleed and ambiance enhance the overall sonic presence of a performance.
Frequency Response Curve Frequency response determines the basic “sound” of the microphone. It is determined by the range of sound (from lowest to highest frequency) that a microphone can reproduce, and how that sound varies at different frequencies.
Flat Wide, uniform response. Consistent sensitivity through frequency range.
