Cover Crops FAQ Question: When do I plant Tillage Radishes?
Answer: Tillage Radishes should be planted between August 1st and September 15th.
Question: When do Tillage Radishes die?
Answer: They will die with two consecutive evenings of temperatures in the mid teens.
Question: At what rate should I plant Tillage Radishes? Answer: Plant at a rate of 10 lbs per acre if broadcasting or flying. Plant them 8 to 10 lbs/acre when drilling and as low as 4 lbs/acre when using row crop planting.
Question: What is the difference between annual ryegrass and cereal (winter) rye?
Answer: Annual ryegrass (ARG) is a deep rooted cover crop that has a shorter more dense top growth than cereal rye. Annual rye grass roots can be two to three feet deep. The roots of ARG will help to break-up a soil hard pan and to bring leached nutrients back to the root zone. The majority of the root mass for cereal rye is found in the top eight inches of the soil. It has more Biomass above ground than ARG and is more winter hardy.
Question: Can Tillage Radishes be planted with annual ryegrass, and at what rate?
Answer: Bristol Blend is a very popular mix of RootMax annual rye grass and Tillage Radishes. It should be drilled at 15 lbs/acre or aerial applied at 18 lbs/acre. The mix is a combination of Tillage Radish and Tillage RootMax. Increase rates by 25% for a high tonnage high quality grazing forage for the fall and in the spring.
Question: What is the difference between cereal rye, and triticale?
Answer: Triticale is a result of crossing wheat with cereal rye. Triticale has many of the same cover crop benefits with a little higher quality biomass. It is easier to manage than cereal ryes because it will not “bolt”, go into the reproductive stage, as fast as cereal rye. This makes it easier to manage as a cover crop.
Question: What are the planting dates for cereal rye and triticale?
Answer: Plant cereal rye or triticale between September 1st and October 15th.
Question: When is annual rye grass planted and at what rate?
Answer: It is planted between August 1st and September 30th. It can be drilled at 15 lbs/acre, aerial applied or broadcast at 20 lbs/acre. Increase the rates at least 25% if you intend to graze the cover crop.
Question: What are the planting rates for cereal rye and triticale?
Answer: Drill Triticale or cereal rye at 75 lbs/acre or aerial apply around 90 lbs/acre. A seeding rate of 100 to 110 lbs/acre is acceptable for grazing or harvesting as a forage in the spring.
Question: What legume can be added to a cover crop blend?
Answer: TillageMax-Indy Blend is a blend of RootMax annual rye grass, Tillage Radish and Crimson Clover. It should be drilled at 18 lbs/acre or aerial applied at 20-22 lbs/acre. The blend is a combination of Tillage Radish, Tillage RootMax and CCS Crimson Clover. Increase rates by 25% for a high tonnage high quality grazing forage for the fall and in the spring.
Question: Is there a cover crop blend that will die off before the spring?
Answer: The Dover Blend is a combination of oats and Tillage Radishes. The blend is a combination of Tillage Radish® and CCS Oats. It is planted at 30 lbs/acre and broadcast or aerial applied at 38 lbs/acre. Everything will die prior to spring. If desired, it can be grazed in the fall and early winter.
Question: What will provide the most forage tonnage for a spring harvest?
Answer: Mixing triticale or cereal rye at 75% with 25% RootMax annual rye grass will provide a high quality high tonnage spring forage for grazing or harvesting. Plant at a rate of 80 to 100 lbs/acre.

*This is planting 2-3 lbs of Tillage Radish® with winter wheat.
EXTREMELY RAPID GERMINATION AND GROWTH • Germinates in 2 to 3 days if adequate moisture is available • Foliage spreads out to fill the given space and shade out weeds • The tuber and thick foliage are the storehouse for vital nutrients • Grows to a height of 12-24” depending on when it was planted
The superior genetics of the Tillage Radish® cover crop are the secret weapons behind the dependable, consistent results and measurable benefits to the farmer, the soil, and the environment.
BIOACTIVE PLANT CHEMICALS (GLUCOSINOLATES) • Studies show Tillage Radish® increases the soil’s bacteriovores who feed on nematodes and increases the (N) cycling process mineralizing available (N), (P), (Ca) and (S) • Weed-suppressive effect helps shade out competition • High levels of the compound glucosinolate and when decomposed, produces isothiocyanate (ITC) which has fungicidal, nematicidal properties. Some studies say it can also help inhibit weed seed germination

Corn yields up average 12 bu/ac Soybean yields up 8 bu/ac Winter Wheat yields up to 5-7 bu/ac increase* Over 10 years of university R&D Tillage Radish® is genetically superior
Helps control nematodes Genetically superior Tillage Radish® is backed by 10+ years university and on-farm R&D... no other radish comes close to this extensive testing!
LARGE, DEEPLY PENETRATING TAPROOT • Pulls up nutrients, allows increase water infiltration, establishes a root trail for the next crop, stores water in the soil profile • The Tillage Radish® bio-drilling taproot forms when soil compaction reaches around 290 psi, boring into the subsoil to wick up nutrients • Taproot has been reported to go 30 inches and beyond WINTERKILLS & QUICKLY DECOMPOSING RESIDUES • Usually after three nights with temperatures in the mid-teens • Residue is very sparse at planting time • Low (C)/(N) ratio making for a fast mineralization • Releases stored nutrients when next crop needs it (April-June)
When Tillage Radish® hits the compaction zone (around 290 PSI), the tuber stops and the taproot begins to bio-drill down into the subsoil.
HIGH NUTRIENT (N, P, Ca, S, B) CONTENT • A nutrient scavenger taking up nutrients throughout soil profile • A Calcium film is left on the soil surface as part of decomposition • Sulfur is concentrated in the roots and gives off an odor when decomposing, just like the additive mercaptan that is added to natural gas. • Tillage Radish® mineralizes available (N), (P), (Ca) and (S) • Tillage Radish® pulls up twice the amount of (Ca) than cereal rye
Taproot reaches depths of 30” and beyond!

PLANTING TIPS & SEEDING RATE Precision Planter (4 lbs/acre): 15” rows using 60-cell small milo or sugar beet plates with 4” in-row spacing. Seed is selected for Precision Planting performance. Scan code for additional Drill Seeder (8 lbs/acre): Using small grass box, planting information use alfalfa setting as a guide to set seeding rate. A large seed box can be used but the setting is very low and somewhat difficult to establish. Use Alfalfa as comparable seed on drill charts, reducing by 10%. It’s important to calibrate your drill to determine correct seeding rate.

Broadcast/Aerial Seeding (10 lbs/acre): Strive for good soil and moisture contact (If fields are moist, fly seeds on. If fields are dry, push seeds in); Corn seeding indicator is when 1” patches of sunlight on soil surface are seen or approximately 4 weeks prior to anticipated harvest time; Soybean seeding indicator is at leaf yellowing; Cotton seeding indicator is right before defoliation; Improve success rate by using drop tubes when seeding with a high clearance cover crop seeder. Nitrogen: To reach peak potential, needs 40-60 lbs of N, residual or applied.
1. Rapid Germination
2-3 days with proper soil temperature and moisture
2. Weed Suppression
Thick foliage shades out available space
3. Bio-Drilling Taproot
Tuber narrows at compaction point, sending out the taproot, boring down into the subsoil up to 30” in depth
Enlarged tubers and thick foliage stockpile nutrients wicked up through the bio-drilling taproot
Planting Depth: 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. Can be planted 1” in light soils if necessary to reach moisture.
5. Winterkill
Seeding Rate: - Drilling: 8 lbs/acre - Broadcast / Aerial: 10 lbs/acre - Precision Planting (15” with 4” in-row): 4 lbs/acre
Dies after 2-3 nights in the mid-teens, leaving a blanket of winter cover
6. Seedbed Ready
Residue has decayed, nutrients are available, and soil health and seeding conditions are enhanced
866-807-7015 Home of the Tillage Radish®
Planting: Plant 3-10 weeks prior to the first killing frost. Green growth starts in less than a week in normal conditions; radish size depends on growth time, plant competition and available nutrients to scavenge.
4. Nutrient Silos
Control: Tillage Radish® winterkills with 3 nights in the mid-teens. If no killing frost, control with mowing, grazing or burndown of one quart of glyphosate with one pint of 2,4-D equivalent at flowering.

Clovers Clovers can provide nitrogen to the soil and
produce forage for cut and carry harvest as well as grazing. Red Clover does both of these well and White Clover is best suited for grazing. Clovers are an excellent plow-down crop and can be used for many different cover crop applications.
Clovers for Cover Crop & Soil Building Crimson Clover Crimon Clover is usually planted in late summer and used for feed in the south and as a cover crop in the north. This is an annual clover with excellent nitrogen fixation abilities. It can over winter if planted in late summer. It will provide a feed source in the spring or an excellent green manure for building soil health.
Alsike Clover
Clovers for Forage & Cover Crop
Aliske Clover is a perennial clover used where soil conditions are less than favorable for red or white clover. It can be used for green manure, in hay fields and in pastures. It is not a first choice clover in the Midwest, but it can help provide fertility and cover in difficult areas.
Freedom Medium Red Clover
Yellow Blossom Sweet Clover
Freedom Medium Red Clover is a multi-year fine stemmed clover that has has reduced pubescence on the stem. Freedom is an excellent companion with our All Grass and Haymaster mixes. The big leaves and high tonnage potential make it a great variety for interseeding pastures or thin hay fields.
Yellow Blossom Sweet Clover is used primarily as a green manure crop. It can add large amounts of nitrogen to the soil. It is also used as an attractant for bees and other wildlife. It is one of the best clovers for improving soil health. Yellow Blossom Sweet Clover is a known host for soybean cyst nematode.
Common Medium Red Clover
Mammoth Red Clover
Common Medium Red Clover can be used for thin hay fields or frost seeding into wheat fields. It does not have the yield or persistence of Freedom Medium Red Clover, but it is an inexpensive way to introduce a legume into a field. It works well in a plow down situation or for one cutting of stubble hay.
Mammoth is used primarily as a green manure crop to build up soils. It creates excessive amounts of low quality forage that produces large amounts of humus. It is an excellent soil building clover, but is very poor as a livestock feed.
Ever Graze Ladino White Clover Ever Graze is a large leaf high yielding variety with increased vegetative vigor following frequent grazing. It will persist under heavy close grazing and dry conditions. It is an excellent legume that is easy to establish in grass pastures. It will provide feed for grazing and nitrogen for the grasses in the pasture.

Forage Grasses Tall Fescue
Tall Fescue is a persistent species that will produce high levels of high energy grass. It does well in dry and wet locations and has very good winter survivability. It is important to select varieties that are either endophytefree, or endophyte-friendly when using as a high quality livestock forage. Tall Fescue can be used alone or blended with Alfalfa, Clover or other compatible grasses. Different varieties should be considered when using as dry hay, haylage, grazing or stock-piling for winter grazing.
ProHarvest’s High Energy Forage Grass line up consists primarily of improved varieties from Barenbrug Seeds. These improved, premium varieties offer later maturing and increased production of high quality grass. Our common varieties offer establishment, persistence and yield.
STF 43 Tall Fescue (endophyte-free) A premium blend of late maturing, soft-leaf tall fescue. STF 43 is well-suited for cutting which makes it an excellent selection for planting with legumes and other grasses. It can be used for haying and grazing.
Barolex Tall Fescue (endophyte-free) A quick to establish, soft-leaf variety with exceptional yield. It produces a dense sod with leaf quality that is similar to perennial ryegrass. This is an outstanding variety for grazing.
Orchard Grass
Orchard grass is a high yielding grass that works excellent as dry hay, haylage and grazing. It does best in drier soils and will excel with fertility. Is an excellent companion to alfalfa and clover. Later maturing varieties will match-up better with alfalfa and can provide a less stemy first cutting compared to early maturing common varieties.
HDR Meadow Fescue
HLR Orchard Grass Combo
HDR is a late maturing, winter hardy and high yielding blend of meadow fescue. It is one of the highest quality grasses on the market. It should be used primarily in mixes for grazing and haying.
HLR is an orchard grass blend that is late maturing, winter hardy and high yielding. The blend will increase establishment success and provide for more disease protection. It can be used for haying and grazing.
Fawn Tall Fescue
Baridana Orchard Grass
Fawn is primarily used for waterways and its soil holding capabilities. It is a deep rooted variety that holds soil well and is very persistent. Fawn is classified as having mild-endophyte.
A late maturing winter hardy variety with excellent rust resistance. It produces a dense sward with less undesirable grass clumps. It is an excellent variety for grazing with a very high rating for winter hardiness.
ENDOPHYTE FREE TALL FESCUE The endophyte found in the common Kentucky 31 variety can be responsible for increasing body temperatures in livestock. It can result in negative gains and other negative growth and development issues. The endophyte-free & endophyte-friendly varieties have eliminated negative concerns of the endophyte and are valued for their superiority as a feed.

Forage Grasses Perennial Rye Grass
This is the most widely used cool season forage grass in the world. It is excellent for grazing, haylage and balage. It does not dry very well for dry hay production. The improved varieties are more winter hardy than the traditional common varieties. Perennial Rye Grass produces high quality and high energy feed. The production is decreased during the summer when moisture is limited.
Timothy
Timothy is a high tonnage spring crop. Later maturing improved varieties will provide some growth beyond the first cutting. It is usually produced for dry hay and haylage. Some varieties can be grazed and will perform best with proper grazing management. Timothy has superior winter hardiness and palatability. It is very desirable alone or in a mix for horse hay.
BG 24T Perennial Ryegrass A blend of early and intermediate maturing diploid and tetraploid varieties. This blend provides more heat and cold tolerance. BG 24T is an excellent pasture or haylage variety with high tonnage and persistance.
Other Grasses
Barfleo Timothy
Green Spirit Italian Ryegrass
Barfleo is an intermediate maturing improved variety. It is an excellent hay type variety with good spring production. Barfleo has improved grazing tolerance for horse pastures.
Green Spirit is a blend of diploid and tetraploid Italian ryegrasses. The seed head will not appear until the second year of production. It will produce high quality and good tonnage the first year.
Bromegrass
Bromegrass requires high fertility and well drained soils for maximum performance. It is an excellent companion crop to Alfalfa. Brome can provide quick tonnage the first year compared to other grasses, but it does not have the persistence of other grasses.
Barfest Festulolium Barfest is late maturing and has great persistence. It is winter hardy and highly palatable with excellent rust resistance. It can be used in high traffic grazing areas or to extend a hay field.
Hakari Brome
Palaton Reeds Canary Grass
Hakari is very fast to establish and regrow. It is an excellent companion to Alfalfa. It is a late maturing very high yielding variety, but without the persistence or fibrous root system of Smooth Brome.
This is a non-alkaloid variety with great persistence. It can survive under water for over a week and has great drought tolerance. Palaton provides good production for problem areas.
Brome Grass (Smooth)
Waterway Mix
Smooth brome is used primarily for ditches and waterways. It is fast to establish with a strong root system that helps hold sod. It tends to be a little coarse for forage production.
An inexpensive blend of tall fescue, timothy, perennial rye grass, and annual rye grass. It provides a dense root system while allowing water to flow over the top.

Summer Annuals
All Grass Hay Mix
PCS 1020 BMR Forage Sorghum
All Grass is a mix of brome grass, orchard grass & timothy varieties. It is designed to work with your favorite legume for a superior mix or to be seeded alone as a high yielding grass only mix.
PCS 1020 is a 90 day one cut variety with excellent tonnage and quality. It has equal tonnage and superior quality to corn silage with less input costs and 1/3 less water needs.
Haymaster Hay Mix
PCS 2010 BMR Sorghum Sudan Grass
Haymaster is a mix of high quality and yielding tall fescue with disease resistant orchard grass and timothy varieties. It is a top choice when marketing hay for high RFQ value and superior visual appearance.
PCS 2010 has the best disease package available. The high quality and tonnage combination works great as a harvested crop and for grazing. This is a great Gene 6 BMR Sorghum Sudan.
Beefmaster Pasture Mix
PCS 2020 BMR Sorghum Sudan Grass
Beefmaster is a mix of high quality, grazing tolerant, tall fescue, perennial ryegrass, orchard grass and white clover varieties. It is excellent for growing stockers, cow/calves, and is a long lived durable pasture mix.
PCS 2020 is a Gene 6 dwarf variety that gives all the tonnage and quality in a more compact leafy plant. It contains more nodes in the bottom 5 inches which makes it an excellent choice for grazing and chopping.
Dairymaster Pasture Mix
HayKing Hybrid Sudan Grass
Dairymaster is a mixture of perennial rye grass, meadow fescue, tall fescue and white clover. It provides the high energy, high protein, high tonnage pasture that a lactating cow demands.
A BMR sudan hybrid with great tonnage and dry down ability. It can be grazed, chopped or made into dry hay. It yields a little less than Sorghum Sudan grass, but it is finer stemmed and easier to work with.
Stockmaster Pasture Mix
Wonderleaf Millet
Stockmaster is a perennial ryegrass, tall fescue and orchard grass blend that supports all classes of animals and tolerates continuous grazing. It contains persistent varieties and requires low management.
Wonderleaf is a very leafy forage millet with excellent tonnage and quality. It can be grazed, baled or chopped. It is excellent in a double crop rotation or planted early in June for quick high quality forage.
Quick to Grow Pasture Mix
Tiffany or Velvet Teff Grass
Quick to Grow has fast germinating varieties of festulolium, orchard grass, perennial rye grass, meadow fescue, plus red & white clover. Use it as a patch or as a short term 3 to 4 year pasture.
Teff is a great emergency crop for planting into thin Alfalfa fields. It can be used for the one year lay period between alfalfa seeding. The quality and tonnage is good for a one year crop, but establishment is tricky.
Bill & Nancy Rudow of Pana, Illinois accomplished this with cover crops in a cash crop rotation, and so can you!
• Planted 75 lbs Winter Rye and 25 lbs of annual rye grass per acre on an 80 acre field in the fall. • Chopped 700 tons of 67% moisture feed in the spring. They valued this forage at $65/ton. • Planted all 80 acres to soybeans in May. • Combined over 60 bushel/acre of soybeans. • They grossed over $1500 per acre and have an abundance of winter feed in a drought year.
