SPRING 2013

2013 CONFERENCE RAPIDLY APPROACHING Church Musicfest under the Byzantine Dome Clergy – Laity – Adult Choir – Chanters – Youth Choir Let everything that has breath Praise the Lord! The City of the Angels awaits you! Saint Sophia Cathedral is honored and delighted to host the annual Metropolis of San Francisco Church Music Federation Conference which will be held during the weekend of June 27, 28, 29 and 30, 2013 in Los Angeles, California. The highlight of this weekend will be the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy celebrated on June 30th by His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos, assisted by the Saint Sophia Clergy, V. Rev. Father John S. Bakas and Rev. Father Allan Boyd and their visiting brother Priests along with the voices of over 100 adult choir singers, youth choir singers and chanters from throughout the Metropolis providing the liturgical responses. The Saint Sophia congregation will also uplift their voices as they do every Sunday in praise of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The music leadership for the weekend will be Jim H. Kollias, Director of Music at Saint Sophia, serving as guest adult choir director; Athena Mertes, Choir Director at Saint John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Las Vegas, Nevada, serving as youth choir director; Rev. Father Apostolos Hill of Saint George Greek Orthodox Church of Prescott, Arizona, serving as chant group director and Christopher P. Yokas, Organist and

Assistant Director of Music at Saint Sophia, serving as guest organist. The goal of this year’s conference is to run three conferences simultaneously for the adults, youth and chanters to receive training, but then to all spend time together at the conference’s social events and to spend free time exploring Los Angeles. This will allow us to achieve the educational and spiritual goals set forth for us by Metropolitan Gerasimos. The music selected this year by the Federation’s Music Committee will be almost identical to the music sung last year: A composite Divine Liturgy artistically weaving together the music settings of Dr.Tikey Zes and of Dr. Frank Desby. The conference opens Thursday evening with the official delegate business meeting taking place in the “Victory Room” at the conference’s hotel headquarters, The Raddison Hotel, Los Angeles at USC. All other conference attendees may enjoy free time in the hotel lobby or the restaurants in the Hotel complex: McKays, Rosso Oro’s Pizzeria and The Lab Gastropub at USC. Please be certain to make your room reservations in time for the Hotel’s deadline of June 10, 2013. FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

Christos Anesti! I pray that your Lenten Journey and His Resurrection was filled with love and joy. Now that summer is quickly approaching, it’s time to think about attending our Church Music Conference. St. Sophia Cathedral in Los Angeles is graciously hosting this great event and has planned an amazing weekend of beautiful music and fellowship. In this edition of the newsletter, you will find more information. Please make every effort to attend. My journey as your president is coming to an end. Per our Church Music Federation By-Laws, a president’s term is 3 two year terms, which I have now reached. I will remain as an advisor for two years for our next president. This is an election year, therefore, we will have elections at our Summer Business meeting in Los Angeles. Please make sure that all our delegates attend to vote on a new board. It’s been a very fruitful 6 years for me and our board. Our ministry has continued to thrive and grow into the new times and visions of the 21 st Century. I need to personally thank each of my board members for all their hard work and patience these past 6 years. I have been blessed to be in the presence of these individuals and work so closely with them. God bless you!!! I wish everyone a very beautiful summer. I hope to see all of you in Los Angeles. INCHOIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW We Need Your Ideas on How Best to Communicate With You In this day and age of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, communication is lightning fast and interactive. The Federation now has a website and a Facebook page to interact with its members. The Inchoirer has traditionally been the best way for the Federation to communicate with its members. We are asking for your ideas on better ways to communicate, attract and sustain our adult members as well as outreach for the youth. The Federation Board wants to hear from you. Did you know that it costs $.95 to mail the Inchoirer to each person? (Our mailing list is close to a thousand.) The Federation is attempting to reduce this cost as declining stewardship and dues leaves us with limited funds, and there is also a need to protect the environment. We have been sending the Inchoirer out by e-mail, by list-serve, posted on our website and by snail mail, mailing a copy to the choir director and priest for each parish with the hope

that these copies may be posted or photocopied for members who do not have computers. However, for this edition, we tried to send to all who do not have email. As you can see the cost above to send just one, this is still quite expensive. We have pondered sending out a one-page bulletin every month, or every other month electronically. Making copies of one page would be much easier. Then we would have just one big edition complete with colored pictures per year. What do you think about this? Please send your comments, suggestions, and any great ideas to your local Regional Administrator. (See editorial box on this page for the administrator for your area.) For those living in the Northwest, since the Northwest does not have an administrator at this time, please contact any Regional Administrator. We hope to hear from you. See related articles on page 6.

seums which await the curiosity of our youth choir singers; and within 3 miles of Saint Sophia Cathedral. All other conference events will take place in Saint Sophia Cathedral and in the newly opened 55,000 square foot Huffington Center at Saint Sophia. This beautiful complex contains classrooms, meeting rooms and offices plus the Maniatakos Fellowship Hall, the Maria Maniatakos Pavilion and the Wilson Hanks Family Gymnasium and Performing Arts Center complete with the Gianopoulos Family Theater fully equipped with Dolby Sound and state of the art audio-visual innovation. On Friday, while the youth singers and chanters begin their activities, the adult choir singers will participate in the conference’s vocal workshop led by Nancy Stück, vocal music and guitar instructor at Beckman High School in Irvine, California. Mrs. Stück holds Bachelor degrees from Azusa Pacific University and Multnoma Bible College, and a Master’s degree from Azusa Pacific. She is a two-time presenter for the National Choral Conductor’s Guild. Mrs. Stück has taught music to every age level, K-12. Her children’s choirs have performed at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, the Imagination Celebration, and various other venues throughout Southern California. She directed the “World Changers” youth choir, high school and college age students, for Calvary Church Santa Ana for 18 years, which toured California, Arizona, Nevada, and Oregon. She will be teaching vocal techniques using our sacred music selections for the conference Divine Liturgy efficiently multitasking as a workshop and a rehearsal in preparation for Sunday’s service. After her presentation, our Cathedral Dean, V. Rev. Father John S. Bakas, will offer a spiritual and Church Music themed message. Lunch will then be served followed by a new music read through and a Divine Liturgy rehearsal in the Cathedral. The Friday evening dinner is an “American” themed special treat followed by Michele Patzakis Prappas and Neal Desby performing five American Folk Songs arranged by Neal Desby for soprano with piano accompaniment. Neal will be present to

accompany Michele and to speak about his compositions. They are truly extraordinary. Then after dinner, conference participants and attending Saint Sophia parishioners will be ushered to the Gianopouls Family Theater for a special Movie Night. On Saturday morning, there will be a full Divine Liturgy run through rehearsal followed by lunch and some awards presented. In the afternoon, all will have free time to explore Los Angeles or to relax at the hotel. There will be a Saturday evening vesper service at Saint Sophia followed by the Awards Banquet in the Maniatakos Fellowship Hall. Please be certain to submit applications for the George N. George Award, the Kathy Trapp Youth Music Award and the Xenia Anton Desby Memorial Organ Scholarships described on page 8. Metropolitan Gerasimos will offer the Keynote address of the conference which will be followed by festive dancing. On Sunday morning, all adult singers, youth singers and chanters will gather in Saint Sophia Cathedral to chant and sing the morning Orthos and responses to the Divine Liturgy followed by the traditional Farewell Luncheon for all conference participants and Saint Sophia Parishioners with luncheon reservations. The 2013 Church Music Conference Committee and the entire Saint Sophia community look forward to your visit to our parish and we hope that you will enjoy your stay in Los Angeles. 3

NATIONAL FORUM Council of Presidents of National Forum Meet

President Keritsis and Vicki Pappas reminded everyone that the National Forum website can be accessed through the Archdiocese website using www.churchmusic.goarch.com and you can find the National Forum on Facebook using www.facefook.com/National.Forum. The National Forum is a great supporter of the Federations and offers guidance to all choir directors and their choir members. Each Federation is facing common concerns: the aging of our choirs, youth participation, using or not using an organ and the loss of choirs throughout the United States. As the population of our choirs age, there is a growing need to inspire the youth to participate and remain active in choirs. Reaching out to them is a priority, but using the right tools will be the challenge. The National Forum is developing programs to assist the Federations.

By Elizabeth Levy The 2013 Council of President’s Meeting was held in Brookline, Massachusetts at Hellenic College/Holy Cross Seminary April 11th to 13th. Maria Keritsis, our newly elected President of the National Forum of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians, presided over the meeting. The attendees included Anna Dounelis, President of the Direct Archdiocesan District Federation; Heidi Mason, President of the Metropolis of Boston Federation; Drucie Papafil, President of the Eastern Federation (Metropolis of New Jersey); Ted Niforos, President of the Mid-Eastern Federation (Metropolis of Detroit and Pittsburg); Pam Cramer, President of the Metropolis of Denver Federation; Lucy Zapsas, President of the Southern Federation (Metropolis of Atlanta) and Elizabeth Levy, Vice-President of our San Francisco Metropolis Federation. Past President Vicki Pappas attended as advisor. Denise Karras, President of the Metropolis of Chicago Federation was unable to attend. During the three day meeting President Keritsis lead several discussions that included the financial status of the National Forum along with a Stewardship update, the Church Music Sunday Drive, CMI’s (Church Music Institutes) and current publications of the National Forum. We were visited by two guests, Mr. Anesti Jordanoglou and Mr. Tony Vrame, both of the Department of Religious Education at Hellenic College/Holy Cross Seminary. They are working with the National Forum on youth initiatives. HC/HC is also working with the New England Conservatory in developing a new accreditation certificate in Chant. President Keritsis, along with Vicki Pappas, was very pleased to hand out to Presidents the Paschal Troparion: “Christ is Risen” hymn card for congregational use. This is the approved translation by the Holy Eparchial Synod set to the familiar Greek “Christos Anesti” hymn which will hopefully be used throughout the Archdiocese. The front of the laminated card shows a photo of the icon of the Resurrection from the Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church in Butte, Montana. The reverse side has both the Greek and English of the hymn. Every church was sent a sample along with an order sheet. In Archdiocesan news, three articles on music will be published in the upcoming PRAXIS magazine in June. The three contributors are John Boyer, with an article relating to chant; Joanne Kambouris on Youth Choir formations and Nick Tarlson’s article on California composers.

IMPRESSIVE VOCAL WORKSHOP LEADER FOR CONFERENCE Nancy Stück is the vocal music and guitar instructor at Beckman High School in Irvine, California. She holds Bachelor degrees from Azusa Pacific University and Multnoma Bible College, and a Master’s degree from Azusa Pacific. She is a two-time presenter for the National Choral Conductor’s Guild, and was the general director and adjudicator for CCG’s Youth Praise 95 at the Crystal Cathedral. Mrs. Stück is a member of the Music Teachers Association of California, the Southern California Vocal Association, and the American Choral Directors Association. Mrs. Stück has also taught piano, voice and guitar. Mrs. Stück has taught music to every age level, K12. Other groups have toured internationally. Mrs. Stück directed various summer choir camps, including the Wildwood Music Cam in Big Bear. The Beckman High School choirs have consistently earned Superior ratings at choral festivals and her students are frequently chosen for state and local honor choirs and winners of choral competitions in Southern California. 5

CHURCH MUSIC INSTITUTES FOR THE FALL 2013 LOOKING FOR SITES By Tikey Zes

Our Church Music Federation will again be presenting CMI's in the Fall of 2013. This year the emphasis will be on enhancing the singing of the liturgy by the choir through understanding its structure, theology and the meaning of its principal hymns. Choral techniques and read through of "new" music will also be included. I would like to establish the host parishes and dates for these CMI's before our summer conference in June (28-30) in Los Angeles, California. This will allow us to send out publicity early on so that choir members can plan ahead to attend these CMI's. So I am requesting that parishes that are

willing to host a CMI, contact me prior to our conference in June. My contact numbers are: Tikey Zes, 2503 Booksin Ave., San Jose, CA 95125-4802 or e mail at [email protected]. Excellent guidelines for giving CMI's have been developed by the Regional Administrators and the Federation Board and are now available by contacting Kathy Meck at [email protected] and are also on our website sanfran.churchmusic.goarch.org Remember that CMI's are our best means of educating our choir members to be more effective in our ministry of music for our church.

WEB PAGE AND LISTSERV MAILING LISTS The Federation web page is up and our Webmaster Mario DiGiovanni makes a real effort to keep it current. The interactive web form on the ‘Contact Us’ page does work and

will send any comments you may have or updates of your contact information directly to the President of the Federation where it will be directed appropriately.

WE'RE ON FACEBOOK(sort of)! Change comes hard to us social media latecomers. Just before Pascha we created a Facebook page for the Federation. You can find it at Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco Church Music Federation. Yes, use the full name of our Federation. We've

barely started and your board members experience with Facebook ranges from 'none' to 'regularly checks up on friends and family'. None of us manages a FB page of our own or for another group so please have patience as we learn the ropes.

NOTE: Hard copies of this issue were sent to all choir directors, delegates and priests. If you received this hard copy, please make sure all members of your group have access to it.

COMPOSER’S CORNER CROSSROADS by Steve Cardiasmenos

this commentary. We have the power to change our course. We always have had that power. One thing I have been blessed with is having been asked to conduct choirs at many conferences all across the United States over the past 20 years. In fact, I am headed to Kansas City on June 2nd to conduct my liturgy arrangement with the Denver Federation. In all my travels, I have seen wondrous things all across this country at the local level. There isn’t just one correct answer to the “graying” problems we are facing. One thing I know for sure is that it has to happen at the grassroots. One “size” does not fit all. Take up the challenge to create change in your local community. You know what you need locally. Don’t wait for someone beyond your community to give you the answers. Create a youth choir and create the bridge to your adult choir right away. Don’t create a youth choir as a separate entity with no connection to the adult choir, otherwise your youth choir members will never transition to the adult choir. This is why I wrote hymns like my YSATB Praise the Lord. I wanted the youth choir to be integrated right along side of the adult choir right at the start. Make sure you don’t wait too long to get those youth choir members involved with your adult choir…. the earlier the better. If our children are already singing in a high school choir or playing an instrument in high school, they should absolutely be singing in the adult choir as early as 14 years old or younger. Otherwise, they will sing in the youth choir until they graduate from high school and then they are off to college and the connection and bridge to an adult choir is never made. I will say it again: Change needs to come from the grassroots! Take a look around at our churches across this country and look to those communities who have already created a model for what I’m describing. Don't be an island all to yourself. Connect locally with other churches and get the youth involved with each other locally beyond the confines of your own parish. Whether it’s choral singing, chanting, congregational singing or a combination of some or all, find the model that works best in your local community and promote it with your youth as early as possible, including in our Sunday Schools as well. Part of what created large vibrant choirs back in the “glory days” of our choirs 50 or more years ago was that the youth was integrated in our church choirs at a very young age, some as early as 10 – 11 years old. There were no youth choirs back then! The youth were the young adult choirs back then and there is no reason why they can’t be the choirs of today and the future.

For those of you who thought you were going to read a recent account of my latest composition projects, I am sorry to disappoint you all this time around. I wanted to take a moment to provide a commentary of sorts about the crossroads we are facing as church musicians as we continue our journey into the 21st century. It’s by no means a great surprise about what I am going to comment on. We, as a church organization have been talking about the “graying” of the choirs for well over 40 years. In that time, we have also tried to promote youth choirs and we have attempted to create a bridge to our adult choirs. Forty years later… have we been successful? The answer to that question is certainly debatable. After 40 years, we continue to have a “graying” of the choirs and in fact, the choirs are not the only group in the church that are “graying”. Our chanters have been “graying” for much longer than 40 years and if I may be so bold to say that many of our church organizations in general have also been “graying” during this same period of time. This is not to say that we don’t have young vibrant parishioners in our communities. We absolutely do, but many of those young parishioners have not carried on the tradition of singing in the choir or becoming chanters. In fact, as I look back over these past 40 years, we have lost several generations of younger parishioners who have not become involved with the church on a day to day basis. By no means is this “graying” a problem solely owned by the Greek Orthodox Church. It is a problem that exists in practically every world Christian denomination. Again, I am not trying to make some sort of Earth shattering profound statement here, as I am certain that all of you are well aware of all of these facts. Back in 1983, I was at our Church Music Conference in Los Angeles. After the vesper service, His Eminence Metropolitan Anthony, of blessed memory, gave a short sermon following the service. He started his sermon with this opening remark: “The Church is Dead!” He repeated this statement three more times as he looked across the parishioners in the pews. At the time, I didn’t know where he was going with this, but looking back at what followed in his sermon, I now understand his foresight to see where we as a church organization and as a church in general were headed and he knew back then that we needed to create a bridge to our youth, otherwise we were certainly headed to this “graying”. Fast forward 40 years… Just so you know that I am not painting a picture of gloom and doom, here’s the flip side of 7

KATHERINE TRAPP YOUTH MUSIC AWARD 2013

WOW! It’s that time again! Nominations now being accepted. Did you know George George? He was a dedicated choir member for over 50 years. When this award was established years ago, that was a real big deal, and it still is! We all know those hard working and devoted members of our choirs. Please honor these individuals of your choir by nominating them for the George George Award. Send this year’s nomination to Dr. Chris Vitakes, 1353 “C” Street Hayward, CA 94541. The forms can also be faxed to 707745-1994 or e-mailed to [email protected] Remember to have the nomination form signed by your choir director and parish priest. Deadline is June 1, 2013.

Kathy Trapp served as our first Youth Music Specialist for the Metropolis Church Music Federation. Her absence has left a great void in this very important ministry. To honor her legacy this award, established in her name, recognizes youth musicians in our parishes. Those children who demonstrate a deep love for the music of the Orthodox Church through participation in choir, chanting, playing the organ are eligible for this award. Children should be between the ages of 8-18. Again, forms can be sent to Dr. Chris Vitakes, 1353 “C” Street Hayward, CA 94541, or fax: 707-745-1994, or e-mail:[email protected].
