Using your Brady Printer connected to your PC. While the BMP41® Thermal Labeling System is sold as a standalone printer, it can also be used connected to your PC using optional Labelmark™ Software. This allows for faster PC-based label creation, importation of data from spreadsheets, and access to additional symbols, barcodes, and fonts. For more information about Labelmark™ Software, visit www.bradyid.com/labelmark. Using the BMP41® connected to your PC does require installation of a printer driver onto your PC. Printer Driver. Brady has created a Windows® printer driver to enable use of the BMP41® labeling system connected to a computer. This document provides instructions to install and configure the printer driver, as well as other troubleshooting information if needed.

Installing the Printer Driver Installing your print driver for BMP41® system requires up to 3 steps: Step 1 Remove existing BMP41® Printer Driver from your computer (if applicable) Step 2 Install the Printer Driver onto your PC Step 3 Configure the Printer Driver settings on your computer (if PC is on a network) Should you have further questions not covered in this guide, please call our Technical Support team at 800-643-8766 Monday through Friday 7am-6pm CST, or email us at [email protected].

Step 1 – Remove existing BMP41® Printer Driver from your computer (if applicable) If you DO have an existing BMP41® Printer Driver on your computer - you will need to complete this step. If you do not have an existing BMP41® Printer Driver on your computer - skip this step, go directly to step 3. If you DO NOT KNOW if you have an existing BMP41® Printer Driver on your computer – here is how you can check your PC:

Verifying if there is currently a driver installed • •

Windows XP - Select Start >Settings (if applicable)>Printer and Faxes. If the BMP41® driver is installed it will appear in the list. Windows 7 - Select the Windows Logo Start button >Devices and Printers. If the BMP41® driver is installed it will appear in the list.

For Windows® XP: 1. Remove existing BMP41® Printer Driver: • Select Start >Settings (if applicable)>Printer and Faxes. • Left mouse click to select the BMP41® • Right mouse click and select • In Printers and Faxes click on “File” located in the top menu bar and then select “Server Properties”. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ USA Technical Support: 1-800-643-8766 www.BradyID.com © 2013 Brady Worldwide Inc. Click on the “Driver tab”. Left mouse click to highlight the BMP41® and click on . If prompted, confirm the removal of that driver. Click on the button to close the Printer Server Properties window. Close the Printer and Faxes window. If your printer is still plugged in and on, you will need to remove the USB portion of the driver. To do this, first right-click on and select “Manage” Under “System Tools”, select “Device Manager” Click on the plus symbol to the left of “Universal Serial Bus controllers” to expand the list Find and right-click on “USB Printing Support” and select “Uninstall” (If there are multiple entries, unplug or power down any other USB device connected to your PC, the remaining device should be your BMP41®) Close the Device Manager window.

2. Remove Support Files: (Files should delete automatically so if you do not find them in the locations below, proceed to the next bullet point until complete) • Open Windows Explorer. To do this right mouse click on the Start button and select “Explore”. • In the left column click on the + icon to the left of “My Computer” to expand it. • Click on the + icon to the left of the main drive. This is usually the “C” drive. • Locate the “WINDOWS” folder and click on the + icon to the left of the folder to expand the folder. • Locate the “inf” folder and left mouse click to select the folder. - Note if the “inf” folder isn’t displayed in the title bar menu click on “Tools” and then “Folder Options” - Click on the “View” tab and in the “Hidden files and folders” select “Show hidden files and folders” - Click to close the Folder Options window • In the right column scroll to the OEM files and locate the OEM file with the highest number. Double click on the OEM.INF file. In the “CatalogFile “section look for “BradyBMP41.cat”. Once found, close the file and right click on the both the OEM.INF & OEM.PNF file deleting each file. If the “BradyBMP41.cat” wasn’t located in the file open each OEM.INF file until the file is located. - Note: When double clicking on the OEM file it may prompt asking which program to open it with. Select “Notepad” from the list. • In the left column locate the “System32” folder. This folder is also located in the “Windows” folder. Left mouse click the “System32 folder” to select it. In the right column locate the file “VglmonBMP41.dll”. Once found left click it to select it and then right mouse click and select “delete”. • In the left column click on the + icon to expand the “System32” folder. • Click on the +icon to expand the “spool” folder. • Click on the +icon to expand the “drivers” folder. • Click on the + icon to expand the “w32x86” folder. • Delete the folder “bradybmp41…” ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ USA Technical Support: 1-800-643-8766 www.BradyID.com © 2013 Brady Worldwide Inc. Left mouse click on the “3” folder to select it. In the right column locate the following files and delete the files by left clicking to select it and then right click and select “delete”. - VarBMP41Drv.dll - VarBMP41Drvui.dll - VarBMP41Spl.dll Close the “Windows Explorer” window The driver is now fully removed.

In the section above, when removing the VglmonBMP41.dll you will most likely get an error telling you “Access Denied”. This is because you need to stop the print spooler before deleting it. Steps for that are as follows and can be done before going into Windows Explorer. • Select Start>Run • Type in “net stop spooler” • Click the button. When all the files are removed, but before you move on to the next step, you will need to reactivate the spooler using the following steps (Place after closing the “Windows Explorer” window. • Select Start>Run • Type in “net start spooler” • Click the button. For Windows® 7 (32 bit & 64 bit): 1. Remove existing BMP41® Printer Driver: • Select the Windows Logo Start button >Devices and Printers. • Left mouse click to select the BMP41® to select it. • Right mouse click and select “Remove Device” • Click on to confirm • Click Start and type “Services” into the search box. • After selecting “Services” scroll down and right-click on “Print Spooler” and select “Restart” (Leave this window open since you will need to come back to this later in the removal process) • Move back to the Devices and Printers window. Left click on any other printer driver to select it. In the top menu bar click on “Printer Server Properties” • Click on the “Driver tab” • Highlight the BMP41® and click on • Select “Remove driver and driver package”. Click • Message appears stating “deleting this printer driver package will remove it from the system. Are you sure you want to remove?” Click

NOTE: If you receive a message that you are unable to remove the driver because it is in use, follow the steps highlighted in yellow below to restart the print spooler and retry the removal. Click on the button to close the Printer Server Properties window. Close the Printer and Faxes window. If your printer is still plugged in and on, you will need to remove the USB portion of the driver. To do this, first click on and type “Device Manager” Click on the arrow symbol to the left of “Universal Serial Bus controllers” to expand the list. Find and right-click on “USB Printing Support” and select “Uninstall” (If there are multiple entries, unplug or power down any other USB device connected to your PC, the remaining device should be your BMP41®) Close the Device Manager window.

Double click on the OEM.INF file. In the “Manufacturer “section look for “BradyBMP41.cat ®”. Once found, close the file and right click on the both the OEM.INF & OEM.PNF file deleting each file. If the “BradyBMP71.cat “file wasn’t located in the file open each OEM.INF file until the file is located. - Note: When double clicking on the OEM file it may prompt asking which program to open it with. Select “Notepad” from the list. • In the left column locate the “System32” folder. This folder is also located in the “Windows” folder. Left mouse click the “System32 folder” to select it. In the right column locate the file “VglmonBMP41.dll”. Left mouse click on the “3” folder to select it. In the right column locate the following files and delete the files by left clicking to select it and then right click and select “delete”. - VarBMP41Drv.dll - VarBMP41Drvui.dll - VarBMP41Spl.dll Also in the “System32\spool\drivers\w32x86” folder there is a “PCC” folder. Left mouse click the PCC folder to select it. In the right column locate the file that starts with “bradyBMP41.inf…” Select the file by left mouse clicking on it and then right click to select “delete” In the “System32” folder locate the “DriverStore” folder. Click on the + icon to expand the folder. Click on the + icon to expand the “FileRespository” folder. You want to delete the folder that starts with “bradyBMP41.inf...” a. Note: This file is a Trusted Installer file. Please consult with your IT department for steps to remove this file type. Close the “Windows Explorer” window The driver is now fully removed.

In the section above, when removing the VglmonBMP41.dll you will most likely get an error telling you “Access Denied”. This is because you need to stop the print spooler before deleting it. Steps for that are as follows and can be done before going into Windows Explorer. • Select Start>Right-Click on “Computer” and select “Manage” • Expand “Services and Applications” on the left • Click on “Services” • On the right window, scroll down until you get to the “Print Spooler” category. • Rick-click on “Print Spooler” and select “Stop” When all the files are removed, but before you move on to the next step, you will need to reactivate the spooler using the following steps (Place after closing the “Windows Explorer” window. • Select Start>Right-Click on “Computer” and select “Manage” (Or simply maximize the “Computer Management Window” if left open) • Expand “Services and Applications” on the left • Click on “Services” • On the right window, scroll down until you get to the “Print Spooler” category. • Rick-click on “Print Spooler” and select “Start” • After the “Print Spooler” is starter, close the “Computer Management” window.

Step 2 – Install latest BMP41® Printer Driver onto your computer STOP! – Do not connect the USB cable to the PC or printer until you have been instructed to do so. 1. Install BMP41® Printer Driver: If the driver file has been downloaded from the Bradyid.com website, unzip the file to a known location on your PC and then run the file Setup.exe file under the BMP41 driver folder

Or Insert the provided CD into your CD-ROM drive. Run the Setup.exe file located on the CD. - Note: If your PC Autorun is turned on the above step isn’t needed and the install welcome screen automatically appears on the screen. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

On the Start screen, please read through the steps that the installer will walk you through and Click On Language Selection Screen select desired language. Click From the Handheld Printers list under Preparation select the BMP41® and click The “Software Installation” will pop up, Click The next screen will advise to “Connect your printer and PC with USB cable”, DO NOT CLICK . While leaving the previous screen untouched, follow through the New Hardware Wizard that opens after plugging in and powering on your BMP41® by following the instructions on the next few steps below. 8. Select "No not at this time" and click . 9. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" click . 10. Ensure that “Search for the best driver in these locations.” Is selected, Check “Search removable media (floppy, CD-ROM…) if using driver disc - OR - check “Include this location in the search” if using the downloaded driver package. Click and then select the unzipped driver folder and then click . Once the driver location is selected click 11. If prompted with a message about Windows Logo Testing, click and finish the New Found Hardware Wizard. 12. Once the New Found Hardware Wizard is completed successfully, now click on the “Connect the USB cable” screen. 13. The installer will now verify that communication is success via the USB connection and will prompt with a green check arrow if successful. If you receive a red X stating it failed, please follow the instructions to attempt a different USB port. If this is still unsuccessful, please contact Technical Support for further assistance. If successful, please click 14. The installer will then install the Brady Network Card Configuration Utility. This is not applicable to your printer so feel free to delete the icon that is placed on the desktop after the driver installation is complete. Please click 15. The final stage of the driver installer will check to ensure both the USB driver and Brady Network Configuration Utility have completed successfully. If the driver install has not gone through properly, please attempt the removal instructions or contact Technical Support for further assistance. 16. Congratulations! Your BMP41® Printer Driver is now properly installed and the system is ready to print labels through your labeling software installed on your PC. Install via Windows® 7: 1. The installer will now verify that communication is success via the USB connection and will prompt with a green check arrow if successful. If you receive a red X stating it failed, please follow the instructions to attempt a different USB port. If this is still unsuccessful, please contact Technical Support for further assistance. If successful, please click The installer will then install the Brady Network Card Configuration Utility. This is not applicable to your printer so feel free to delete the icon that is placed on the desktop after the driver installation is complete. Please click The final stage of the driver installer will check to ensure both the USB driver and Brady Network Configuration Utility have completed successfully. Configure the Driver Settings (If on a Network): • To configure the security settings select Start >Settings (if applicable)>Printer and Faxes. • Right-Click on the BMP41®printer driver and select • Click on the tab (If you do not have a security tab you can close this window and skip the rest of these steps) • Ensure that is checked for the Print, Manage Printer, and Manage Documents groups. If changes were necessary, ensure to click before closing the window.

Congratulations! Your BMP41® Printer Driver is now properly installed and the system is ready to print labels through your labeling software installed on your PC.
