THANK YOU — FRIENDS & SUPPORTERS OF SCHLITZ AUDUBON NATURE CENTER Dear SANC Community,

Dear Friends, What a successful year it has been at the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center! Thanks to exceptional collaboration between our talented staff, dedicated volunteers, Board and visitors, we ended the year with a balanced budget. As my term as Board President came to an end we announced the largest planned gift Margarete Harvey in our 42-year history, a legacy of 1.3 million from longtime member Mr. Norman Huth. This gift was completely out of the blue! The entire SANC family will be forever indebted to him for giving our endowment such an impressive boost. This came on top of a sizable bequest earlier in the year from the estate of longtime donor and friend Lawrence E. Demmer. But we are also thanking every volunteer who worked on hands and knees in our 185 acre sanctuary, every Audubon teacher who inspired kids and families to treasure our natural world, every staff member who kept our beautiful, energy efficient building humming, every bird lover who meticulously cared for our 16 raptors - and so many more! Without you and the unwavering support from our loyal membership and the surrounding Villages of Bayside and Fox Point, our Center could not constantly expand its services to the Milwaukee community. My personal thanks go out to the entire Board of Directors for their selfless gift of energy, time, and treasure. Under the intrepid leadership of Executive Director Nathan Smallwood, they opened many doors to other educational and environmental organizations. So it was with the utmost confidence in the future growth and success of our Center that I handed over the presidency to my successor Timothy Gerend. Together we invite you to sample our programs and prairies, our boardwalks and bridges, our raptors and ravines, the Lake Michigan beach, and last but not least, the friendship of all the other nature lovers at SANC.

Margarete Harvey, President Friends of Schlitz Audubon Nature Center June 2011 – June 2013

Tim Gerend

This year saw great progress for Schlitz Audubon Nature Center (SANC). Thank you for your enduring support. I am especially grateful to Margarete Harvey, Past President of FOSANC. Her boundless energy, generosity, commitment, and affinity for action provided fuel for our growth. A diverse team of staff and board members created an ambitious 5-year strategic plan. With nature education at our core, SANC Nature Preschool celebrated its 10th year of operation. Educators and experts nationwide come to study what is one of the premier preschools of its kind. Nathan Smallwood

Our collaborations with Educare and Malaika Early Learning Center continued, serving Milwaukee’s at-risk and most deserving children. Elementary and secondary programs welcomed thousands of students from the inner city to the far reaches, many on reduced or waived fees. Our incredible raptor collection, featuring a new Saw Whet Owl, delivered some of the most exciting and innovative nature programs anywhere. SANC’s redoubled commitment to Conservation led to the creation of a new department and board committee. We strive to set national standards for restoration of our key habitats. We will protect our sanctuary’s unique position as the “gateway” to the great Northern Forest, and its role along a major continental migratory pathway for birds. Buckthorn and other harmful invasive species suffered record losses, thanks to many contributors and tireless volunteers. This was followed by plantings of native flora, reclaiming our wild heritage. New programs were launched to train citizens to become better stewards of the natural world. Service to the community is our reason for being. The strategic plan envisions improved trails, expanded handicap access, new and improved interpretive signage, new exhibits, and much more. We’re off to a great new beginning! Thank you for the steadfast support that made this year a success. Working together, SANC will continue to thrive as one of the great nature centers anywhere!

Incredible Generosity Words cannot express how grateful Friends of Schlitz Audubon Nature Center (FOSANC) is for the two unbelievable bequests received during our 2013FY.

Lawrence E Demmer 2002 Trust

Mr. Demmer died at the age of 90 in late 2011. During his life he was a great friend and generous donor to SANC. Although he never had any children of his own, he loved and was very generous to children’s projects. He funded the Demmer Pavilion for Children at SANC and provided ongoing support over the years for our environmental education programs. Mr. Demmer’s bequest of just over $353 thousand has been placed in the FOSANC Board Advised Endowment Fund which will help support the ongoing education of children here at SANC.

Norman C. Huth Estate

Norman Huth passed away in August 2012, and, in June of 2013, FOSANC was notified that Mr. Huth had named FOSANC as the beneficiary of an extremely generous gift through his estate. His bequest of $1.3 million is the largest individual bequest this organization has ever received. Prior to becoming ill, Norm had been a long time SANC member and enjoyed visiting the Center, walking the trails, and enjoying all aspects of nature. He was a strong proponent of SANC’s environmental education programs for children. He was a tireless volunteer and dedicated his life to promoting and preserving Wisconsin’s natural resources. Planned giving is a highly personal way to invest in the future of an organization. Both of these gentlemen have left us a generous gift that will support SANC’s mission and work for years to come. If you’d like to learn more about planned giving and the benefits it provides to both the donor and recipient, please contact Debby Fulton at, [email protected] or by phone (414) 352-2880 ext. 152. 7
