Selection Criteria The process of selecting the successful candidates was based on the Malawi Government’s policy of equitable system for admitting students to public universities which is addressing the inequitable distribution of opportunities to higher education. Under this policy, each district was offered ten places on merit for the best candidates qualifying for entry into their first, second, third and fourth choice programmes. The rest of the candidates were selected based on both merit and population ratios of their districts of origin. Every district has fulfilled its reserved places of ten, plus those places under the population ratios. Mzuzu University used the candidates’ performance at Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent as the academic basis for merit ranking of candidates. In 2011, a total of 6,217 candidates applied for admission into the University (4,515 males and 1,702 females). Out of these applicants 5,161 qualified for entry into the programmes they had applied for while 1,056 did not qualify. From the candidates that qualified, 366 have been selected to study in various programmes at Mzuzu University. Fees for Non-Malawian Candidates

Non-Malawian candidates staying On-Campus (residential) will pay US $ 3,600 or its equivalent in Malawi Kwacha as fees per academic year. Non-Malawian candidates who will live off-campus (non-residential) will pay US $1,800 or its equivalent in Malawi Kwacha per academic year. Medical fee for non-Malawian students will be based on applicable medical scheme rates. Research supervision fees: to be advised. These are determined by the respective faculties. Please note that the fees quoted in the advertisement may change with or without notice. Fees can be paid in full or in two equal instalments at the beginning of each of the two semesters in an academic year, except for caution and student union fees which have to be paid once at the beginning of the first registration. MSB Bank Loans for Needy Students to Pay Tuition Fees The Mzuzu University Students Representative Council (MUSREC) wishes to advise all needy students seeking assistance from the Malawi Savings Bank (MSB) for loan to pay their fees to collect new loan application forms from any MSB agency across the country and have the forms completed with their parents and guardians before reporting on campus. To be registered, candidates will be required to bring proof of their loan being approved by Malawi Savings Bank (MSB). Therefore applying for the loan does not exclude the student from the requirement to pay fees on

registration. Candidates will still be required to pay a minimum of half of the required amount to register. Mzuzu University will not be responsible for the outcome of the loan application. Stationery and Other Requirements Candidates will provide their own stationery. Different programmes have different requirements for candidates registering in those programmes such as uniform, laptop computers, health and safety equipment and other learning equipment/materials. Details of such requirements will be communicated to successful candidates by respective Faculties upon admission. Original Certificates and Passport-size Photos All candidates are required to bring original copies of their academic certificates and two passport size photos for registration. Admission Letters The University is sending an admission letter to each of the candidates, enclosing other details regarding the admission and a medical form that should be completed with a medical practitioner.
