INTRODUCTION In the second semester first year students of the FEF will be confronted with the business practices of local businesses. In the first semester the focus was on the external environment of businesses. In the second semester, the main focus will be the internal environment of businesses. The management of a business has little control over the external environment, as became clear in the first project. In this project, we will look at the aspects which a business can influence, such as the strategy of the business and the introduction of certain reward systems. The following subjects are involved in this project: Commercial Economics (CE) Business Economics(BE) Business Organisation (BO) Law (RE) Administrative informantion systems (BIV)

De subject teachers of CE, BE, BO, RE en BIV will give different assignments for this projects. In the classes given by these teachers during the semester the necessary support will be given to be able to successfully complete these assignments. The final report and the final presentation will be assessed by the project guides. During the semester the students will also receive support in terms of learning corrects ways to communicate by telephone, by e-mail, learning how to conduct interviews, and how to improve their presentation skills.

THE GOALS OF THE PRO JECT The main goals of the projects are that the student: 1) Becomes acquainted with current local business practices 2) Learns how to use correct telephone etiquette 3) Learns how to communicate correctly by e-mail 4) Learns how to conduct interviews 5) Can plan a project and has good time-management skills (who what, where and how) 6) Can gather relevant information in an efficient and effective manner. 7) Can interpret, summarize and present this information (see goal 5) 8) Can reflect on group processes, and their own role in the group.

3

SETUP AND ORGANIZATION OF THE PROJECT The project consists of group assignments and individual assignments

Project Group Assignments

Individual Assignments

GROUP ASSIGNMENTS 1

The largest part of the project will be made in groups. Groups will consist of 4 to 5 students . During 4 project weeks, during which students will not have any other classes, a set of assignments will be made. The first assignment is to search for a local company (see appendix 1) which the groups will investigate from the perspective of different subjects, such as commercial economics and law. Then will follow 8 group assignments that will be given by different subject teacher which will link theory with local business practices. The assignments will be given at the beginning of the projects week At 16.45 on Friday the completed assignments need to be handed in digitally (on EDU, for instructions see Appendix) and a hard copy will need be delivered to the “projecten postvak” at the University of Aruba.

INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENTS Individual assignments consist of reflection reports, assessments of how the group is functioning and how individual group members, including oneself. These are meant to stimulate reflection and gain insights into the functioning of the group. The reflection reports (appendix 3) need to be handed, digitally on EDU, and if the project guides request it a hard copy also needs to be handed in. Periodically the “Are we a team” survey needs to be filled out on EDU (see appendix 6) The team Peer Assessment form needs to be filled out twice (see appendix 5)

1

See Appendix 7 for the groups of 2011-2012

4

Group members are obliged to attend all kick-offs of project weeks and group meetings, as well as any extra workshops given. If a student is absent 0.5 points will be deducted from their final grade. If a student cannot make it to these events, they will need to inform the project coordinator ahead of time, with a valid reason for their absence

GUIDANCE Guidance and support will be provided by subject teachers, project guides and the project coordinator

PROJECT GUIDES Every group has a project guide. The project guide keeps track of the development of the group and the individual students within the group. The project guides keeps track of the individual development of the student and evaluates each student periodically. At two moments during the project an evaluation meeting will take place with the student, where social and communication skills and the personal development of the students will be discussed. De project guide is the initial contact person in case of question about the project and in case problems arise.

SUBJECT TEACHERS For subject specific questions you may a address the teachers of subject. The teachers of the subject will be available at certain time to answer your specific questions. Besides this, during the classes given in the second semester, subjects and topics relevant to the internal environment will be discussed. It is thus highly recommended that classes are attended regularly.

PROJECT COORDINATOR For problems with group functioning and/or contact with the local companies you should contact your project coordinator

ASSESSMENT

The project will be assessed on two levels: group level and individual level. The groups will make assignments from the subject BO, RE, BIV, CE and BE, write a final report and give a presentation. Together this will counts a 100% of the final grade. Individual grades may differ from the group grade. Individual group members may earn a 10% bonus by showing good self-reflection skills, a large contribution to the group assignments, and providing insight into group processes. Kick-offs sessions (see schedule in appendix 1) are mandatory and should be used by students to make sure the task is understood and offers students the opportunity to ask the teacher of the subject questions. If a student is absent 0.5 points will be deducted from their final grade. If a student cannot make it to these events, they will need to inform the project coordinator ahead of time, with a valid reason for their absence.

Evaluation of group member participation involves peer andself assessment. This information will be used by the project guides to moderate individual student marks. Fill in a grade from 1 to five on each aspect of contribution of each group member. The closer you are to what your groupmembers think of your contribution the better. Thus, if you give yourself very high scores while your group member give you low scores, there may be some doubt about your ability to self-reflect.
