Significant Reduction of Lead Time

Made the Choice Easy

When GKN Wheels in Denmark decided last year to switch from traditional solvent-based wet paint to powder coating, one of the most significant incentives was that the lead time could be cut from 2–3 days to just five hours. At the end of 2008, GKN Wheels began preparing a 2000 square metre, empty and unheated warehouse as the location of a brand new coating system. The system was to replace the outdated wet paint system and the ambition was to have the system in place for the first test runs at the end of May 2009. GKN Wheels in Denmark is a division of GKN Offhighway Systems and produces wheels for agricultural and engineering machines. As a final step in the production process, the wheels are surface treated with a coating system that is corrosion class 4 approved. Until the switch to powder coating, the system utilised a TEKNORAN 3305-19 supplied by Teknos for many years. Therefore, it was natural for GKN Wheels to consult Teknos regarding the choice of powder coating vs. modern water-based alternatives in wet paint as the future surface treatment solution. The decision had to be made before the planning and construction of the new coating system could commence.

Environmental and Quality Aspects There are many environmental and quality-related advantages with powder coating. By switching from wet paint to powder, GKN Wheels achieved a significant reduction of VOC emissions, which represents a significant improvement in the working environment. Improved safety represented another important reason for the switch. Optimising Colour Changes In a powder coating system, colour changes are generally more demanding than with a modern wet paint system. Despite this fact, GKN Wheels can perform a colour change in their new powder system in less than eight minutes. With further optimisation, the target is to reduce the time of a colour change to 6-7 minutes. No More Intermediary Inventory By switching to powder, the lead time has been significantly reduced. At GKN Wheels, the speed has increased from 2.5 metres per minute on the old system to 3.5 metres per minute on the new powder system. In addition, a combination of the primer and powder conveyor chains has eliminated a large intermediary inventory of primed wheels waiting for the top coating. Today the wheels are packed immediately after coating in customer-specific packaging and transported directly to the lorries for shipping.

Security of supply is of utmost importance to GKN Wheels’ customers, which include the large OEM producers of agricultural and contractor machines, each of which has their own special requirements and specifications for the surface treatment. Teknos delivers the majority of the 35 different powder colours from RAL to special colours with and without metallic effect. Danish GKN Wheels is a leading company with regard to powder coating and the exceptionally good results achieved quickly in Denmark have inspired the rest of the Wheels Group. Teknos thanks Michael Friis, Project Engineer, GKN Wheels Nagbøl A/S, for allowing us to visit the company in connection with the writing of this article. Norsok M-501 Approved

Coating Systems at Teknos Norsok standard M-501 includes surface preparation and protective coatings for off-shore installations and the associated facilities. Coating system no. 1 in Annex A of Norsok standard M-501 is used for the exteriors of equipment, vessels, piping and valves. Coatings accepted for system no.1 need to have passed tests in accordance with ISO 20340. Teknos now offers several coating sys-

tems that have passed this stringent, cyclic test. These new, approved systems give customers a more versatile range of choices for their coating systems. Tero Ojala R&D Chemist
