Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG Deepens Relations with the Gulf Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG has some good news to announce in relation to the United Arab Emirates: Markus Kopp, CEO of Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG, held farreaching talks with local airlines during an official visit to the region by the Saxon State Premier, Stanislaw Tillich, at the end of November.

Leipzig/Halle freight hub

Discussions with representatives of Etihad Crystal Cargo and the chairman of Emirates SkyCargo focused on linking Leipzig/Halle Airport into the air freight networks of airlines based in the Gulf. The prospects for working together in a successful way look good. Leipzig/Halle has major geographical advantages over other freight hubs, particularly for shipments moving east. Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG will also be actively involved in setting up a German Graduate School of Logistics in Abu Dhabi. The college, which was recently opened, offers a four-year Arab/German course, which leads to a degree of Bachelor of Engineering in Logistics. The syllabus communicates to students many aspects of logistics in relation to road, rail, sea and air traffic.

Central Connect Airlines Flies to Prague and Brussels from Leipzig/Halle Central Connect Airlines has been operating a Monday – Friday service from Leipzig/Halle to the Czech capital Prague since mid-November; the flight takes off at 9.30 a.m. A Saab 340 aircraft also flies to Brussels twice a day.

Prague on 15 November

Leipzig/Halle Airport set a new record for freight volumes at the end of November once again. This enabled the airport to reinforce its position as one of the most important freight airports in Germany. According to initial figures published by the airport, 600,000 tonnes of freight passed through Leipzig/Halle from January to

November this year. This represents an increase of approx. 27 percent compared to the same period in the previous year.

Leipzig/Halle Airport in Christmas Mood In line with tradition, Leipzig/Halle Airport invited people to attend the fifth benefit concert given by the Berlin Federal Police Orchestra at 6 p.m. on 3 December. Younger visitors to the airport enjoyed a varied programme of crafts and games on 4 December. The police officers playing music provided the audience with a colourful programme consisting of both modern and traditional

items. The pre-Christmas concert was held for the benefit of the “Clownsnasen” charity. This is dedicated to helping children in hospitals in Leipzig, Halle and Merseburg. Large parts of Terminal B were turned into the annual children’s Christmas area. The highlights of the event were the appearance of Father Christmas and performances by the LARIFARI puppet theatre. Admission to both events was free.

The plane with 156 seats in economy class heads for the Swiss city of Basel at 8.40 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Single tickets, including government taxes and airport fees, are available from EUR 26.99. Dresden is the seventh city in Germany that easyjet is using to operate flights.

hangars at the airport. In line with tradition, Father Christmas landed at the Saxon state capital’s airport on 24 December. Santa Claus headed for the airport on board his roomy Christmas Air jet and distributed his presents specially flown in from Lapland to young visitors. The celebrations will reach their climax during the grand “Airport New Year’s Eve Party”. Dance music from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s and an Italian buffet and gambling at the “Little Las Vegas” casino will pave the way for a promising new start to the New Year.

De-Icing Specialists Visit Leipzig/Halle 21 de-icing specialists from ten different German airports met in Leipzig/Halle for a two-day congress on 10 November. They discussed current developments and issues within the sector at the invitation of PortGround, which is responsible for de-icing operations at Leipzig/Halle and Dresden Airports. A concentrated exchange of experiences by the professionals formed the focal point of the workshop. The participants spoke about valuable insights, which they have gained as a result of implementing international standards at German commercial airports – and all this coincided with the onset of the de-icing season. They examined technological improvements together and debated the efficient use of resources when carrying out de-icing operations at commercial airports. They also devoted time to discussing initial and further training for suitable personnel and professional trainers. PortGround took delivery of five brand new Vestergaard deicing vehicles at its two business locations at the end of October. The company, which has 26 modern vehicles, is now in second place in Germany in terms of the strength of its fleet. As far as optimising the consumption of resources is concerned, PortGround has also seized the initiative and developed a unique de-icing simulator in conjunction with Vestergaard. This is now regularly being used for initial and further training courses. As the de-icing specialists were able to establish, the similar will play a role in saving up to 30 percent in resources used for training purposes in the long term. As a result, PortGround will make a long-term contribution to protecting the environment.

From the Region

Electric Cars from Saxony Put into Operation at Lufthansa Engineering The issue of environmentally-friendly and cost-saving mobility is relevant, particularly at times when resources are becoming scarcer and energy costs are on the rise –

De-Icing of aircraft

both in business and private spheres. The Citysax GmbH company has taken an interest in this matter and developed a fully electrical small car with modern safety features; the vehicle can carry up to four people and now faces its test in the real world. The electric cars have been operating at Lufthansa Technik AG too since the end of November 2010. Several vehicles of this type have been included in regular maintenance operations at several German airports. The practical tests, which are designed to last for seven months, are primarily aimed at testing whether the battery can withstand the pressure of daily use. The vehicles have a drive system with plenty of torque and are ideally suited for use on short journeys. A modern lithium ion battery allows the vehicle to travel up to 120 kilometres. Thanks to its 400 volt charging equipment, the vehicles can be recharged in no more than four hours. The energy consumption for 100 kilometres is less than 20 kilowatts – that represents about one-and-a-half litres of fuel. The aim at Lufthansa Engineering is to reduce fuel consumption in the long term for ground traffic too.

Positive Population Development in Dresden Dresden is the only urban district in Saxony to register an increase in its population of approx. two percent. According to figures published by the State Statistics Office, approx. 1271 more people were living in Dresden on 30 June 2010 than at the same time during the previous year. This is partly due to an increase in the number of births and also a significant increase in people moving to the city. Overall Dresden has 518,323 residents. 4,153,631 people lived in the Free State of Saxony at the measuring time in June 2010. This means that the population of the state had fallen by 15,101 or 0.4 percent from the same time in the previous year. This is due to a fall in the number of births and people moving out of the area.
